Two possibilities: 1. No team until new stadium is built. 2. Team starts before new stadium is built, and plays in the Georgia Dome. (I'm hoping it's #2.)
I am guessing that new stadium will not be done till around 2016-17. The Don has said that after New York, that MLS will wait a few years of the next round of expansion. I think that means that when the stadium is done is about the time MLS will add teams 21 and 22 so the new teams first game would be in the new stadium.
That is an amazingly terrible location for the Falcons. Talk about a hike from MARTA and not much parking(I know they claim it is near just as much parking as the dome, but the average distance is about twice as far). At least for MLS it would only be 10-20,000 people and parking would be easier.
How would they do that? I don't think the tunnel for the N/S line comes any closer than four blocks from the location they are talking about.
The last quote for MARTA heavy rail is a million dollars a mile. With all the other worthy rail projects we have there is no reason for a spur to a new taxpayer funded stadium. The stadium might get built, but there is no way MARTA will connect to it.
One question remaining is the name of the team. On that note I recently posted an article titled Why Bring Back the Atlanta Chiefs. If you agree with the gist of the article, see how you can help bring them back here.
Garber interview This is after saying how much he is in love with New York and would give up an arm for a second team there. ESPN: What other new markets have started to come up? I know you were in Miami [recently].
