I thought they kind of coagulated game-packs to the equivalent of a season ticket when talking about season ticket sales.. Like if 4 people bought a 4-game pack, that equals a season ticket. Am I smoking crack? I'm sure I've heard that.
They over promised and under preformed. When people payed for their tickets in the fall of 2010 the Whitecaps were talking about most of the Season in BC Place, ticket scarcity, Canadian Championship, playoffs and becoming "Top 25 in the World". They ended up playing only 4 games in BC Place, people couldn't give tickets away, and they came last in the league. That 3k drop likely represents the scalpers, corporate who thought they would be a hot ticket, and those who bought more tickets than they needed thinking they would have no problem getting friends to go. I know many people who went from 4 last year to 2 this year. I know I have two tickets, and about five times last year I couldn't give away the second ticket for free.
That is true. Whenever teams talk about season ticket numbers, they almost always use Full Season Equivalents (FSEs), which make the whole thing a little misleading.
So.. Since Portland sold out their season already, can we say they have 20k season ticket holders? 17 one game packs does equal one 17 game pack, after all.
Here he talks about 60% of their 13k goal (which would mean around 7,500 if not a bit more). That would mean they've sold less than 1,000 season tickets in the last month! Yikes! I think the fact that they're beginning with a whole bunch of Big O games is not encouraging people to snap up tickets, as they can "test the waters" before commiting, not having the same sense of urgency. If you're doing a "speculative" section then you should put Chicago down for 7,000 in 2012, since that is the number they are expecting per the article that says they had 5,200 last year.
There is something reassuring about lower than expected sales. Even for what is still, by comparison at least, a minority league, we've gotten quite used to exhausted season tickets allocations and consistent sellouts.
Another link confirming 7500 for montreal. http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/2012/03/07/montreal_impact_season_preview/ I doubt we'll see any big numbers till they move into Saputo in June. People still don't have a grasp on what the stadium and the seats will even feel like, and the team has completey changed from last year. All sales thus far are based on brand loyalty and marketing alone. Also, 41,000 tickets were sold to the home opener as of this monday. They should easily reach 50,000 by next week. Though their goal is 58,000.

FC Dallas GM Doug Quinn told Daniel Robertson of www.bigdsoccer.com: On selling out games and building a fanbase: "That’s simple too, you’ve got to have season tickets. The foundation of any professional sports franchise, I don’t care what league it is or what sport it is, is you’ve got to have season ticket holders. We tripled season tickets last year, we’ll double season tickets this year, we’re already up 40% over last year and that was a week ago. We’re selling at a pretty rapid pace, our ticket sales department is, I want to say 300 times larger than when I started. It’s a large group and they’re all trained." http://www.bigdsoccer.com/2012/3/7/2853604/fc-dallas-gm-doug-quinn-discusses-opening-day-stadium
I am intrigued to find out which teams have sold out the allotment of season tickets they had set out to sell.
