The talk lately has been all NFL and what ever the hot topics of the day are. Usually they'll talk about the Rockets or how awfull the Astros are. I would have to tune into that soccer show with ?Gleen Beck? to hear about the Dynamo.
I am a huge fan of the Glenn Beck Soccer show. He does this sweet thing with a chalk board where he links Brian Ching moving to Montreal with Hitler.
I actually listen to Gleen Beck-he's kinda like John Tesh-he has all these life tips and he plays music by Patrick Yanni.
I only listen to ESPNdeportes radio on 1180am sports radio in the US is mostly overhyped drama trash and little true sport talk.
I used to listen WFAN in NY before I moved here and let's face it-it's NY so the quality of radio personality was much better (if you talked out of your ass, they packed you butt on the first PATH train to jersey). Then I started to get into it here and the schmucks around here were horrible. But I listened here and there. Then I moved to Pittsburgh-and for the most part, even their fourth stringers at the midnight shift, knew their stuff and could have decent discussions (Pittsburgh really is quite an intelligent city when it comes to sports-even old grandmothers knew when not to run a Cover 2). Then I moved back to Houston, and some of these guys really come across as frat boys disguised as radio hosts. It's painful. I usually can't get through one segment. except for those chaps on the AM dial that do the football show. Now they are real crackerjacks!
WFAN is by far the worst radio station known to man. Mike Francesa the day after the WWC: "I know you all want to talk about the Women's World Cup Final from yesterday, but I'm not going to talk about it, I didn't even watch it anyway"
well-that's Francesa-he's an idiot. Always has been, but truth be told-the folks in NYC probably didn't care about that anyway.
WFAN is/was the best sports radio station in the country. Francesa is a jerk but entertaining in his own right when he gets called out and spends 20 minute arguing about how is right when he's wrong. Yeah, the FAN is all ball and stick sports (save lacrosse and cricket) but the quality of the hosts is 100x better than the garbage on Houston radio. Charlie Pallilo is the only guy that would survive in any other top 10 market, the rest are unlistenable amateurs.
and don't forget Charlie once said on extra points (in reference to Houston's name change) "who cares about soccer?"-just pandering to the masses. Granted as much as I hate CP, it's no where as much as Francessa. But both pale in comparison the amount that abhor Mark Madden. I don't like Cowherd, but he gets to you think and thus you keep listening.
A little off topic, but in the world of general sports radio the new news radio station (FM 92) has been amazingly respectful toward the Dynamo. Almost daily, they've had some report on the stadium, the pre-season games, or whatever if it's newsworthy. Of course, Craig Roberts and Jorge Vargas are their sports guys, who have always been big Dynamo supporters in their previous jobs on the local TV stations. Seriously, listening to Jorge Vargas talking on the radio about the Dynamo's pre-season game against the Galaxy, in a thorough and honest and respectful way, is pretty startling.
it was also nice to hear Bob Allen ratn and rave about the new stadium a few days ago and included the Dynamo when he mentioned Houston being a top notch sports town with the best stadiums in the country and pointed out that Houston is an international city. As far as radio, pss I'd rather listen to Michael Savage and let my blood pressure shoot up. Followed by a Guinness to calm my nerves.
I'm glad to know Jorge Vargas got a job, he's a great guy and a real friend of the Dynamo. I like Craig Roberts too. And I like the idea of a news station in Houston without spin, like they advertise. Something like KTRH used to be, back in the old days. Before they decided to make me mad.
when the stadium deal was first announced, i wrote to 1560 to inquire why there was no pub. they went out of their way to advance the view that they were an all locally owned, locally focused radio station, so i implored them to at least mention that the face of downtown was literally changing due to a sports stadium. my email was answered by lance zeirlien with the response (paraphrasing) "who cares"? he specifically asked me to wake him up when it's built. There will be the obligatory mention of the dynamo when the season starts and when the stadium opens. after that, forget it. nothing will change until the new crop of sports blabbers gets on the air and we get rid of the tired, macho, defensive apes who are scared to death that a sport that they poo pooed for so many years is creeping into the national sports scene.
92.1 is pretty good. Actually a news station. With actual news reporters and reporting. Can sound a bit like amateur hour at times but much better than the last 5 years of KTRH.
