I hear this morning on NPR that Uncle Phil is going to pull off stealing the Rams back from St. Louis with a shiny new stadium in LA. Insert heavy sigh. Remember when the boys paid trips to Uncle Phil's resort every year? That's the money we need to do this thing.
Have you noticed the rather large, city-built edifice that houses an allegedly professional baseball team? The one that mysteriously sprang up with city dough a couple of years back. It's been done.
It takes no money to convince people to get a baseball stadium built. For the unpoplar sport of soccer no amount of money will suffice.
And it took a generation without baseball in the city to create the demand for it to be done and there's still been a lot of fallout over it.
The truth is that if it was not for Tony Williams, the Nats never come here. Get the mayor, county executive or governor to be the champion of the cause, it makes things much easier. Criticize the FO all you want but that is a big missing piece of the puzzle.
Only one conjugal visit a week? That hardly seems fair since our stadium effort has been fcuked for years.
Stupid comment by Garber that, in my view, reveals a lack of political savvy. Regardless of how true his statement is, there is ZERO upside in insulting local DC politicians. Mention how frustrated MLS is, use the Baltimore lever, put a deadline on a deal, etc., but it will not help MLS or DCU one little bit to publicly deride DC officials as crooks.
There are a lot of other quotes (some of them interesting) from Garber in that piece that are not yet being discussed in this thread.
I got your stadium news right here (well from Goff via twitter) "Why is #dcu training in Arlington? From what I understand, turf field at RFK grounds in unsuitable condition"
Hell, we should all just knock up a few stands around that artificial pitch and make that DCU's new ground. Clark Street is in a similarly pristine condition to Lot 8, and Roaches Run is right there to satisfy our biological urges.
I guess since DCU didn't have a lease, the DCSEC (or whatever) decided they didn't have to upkeep any of the facilities. Thx, Jay!
I haven't been on RFK's Auxiliary turf field in a couple years but last time I was there were potholes beneath the worn surface. It was pretty substandard compared to most area high school turf surfaces. It may just be a symptom of age, when the field was put in there were few turf surfaces around. The new facilities at Long Bridge in Crystal City are quite nice according to some folks I play pickup soccer with (I play on the Ellipse but some of the players in my normal game also play at Long Bridge).
If you haven't seen Long Bridge Park it is in quite a strange area. I stumbled upon it a couple of weeks by accident. When you go by it you think you've somehow left the road and are now entering the town dump.
Oh, I know that area well; I live close to Crystal City. I'm surprised they were able to build that with the Roaches Run waterfowl preserve so close. Mind you, it's between a swamp and a parking lot for construction equipment and commuter buses, so it's not like there was much else going on. The old motel and playhouse back there should be going away soon, especially with the new development at the north end of Crystal Drive. There's an unused spot in Pentagon City that might do nicely for a small stadium reminiscent of something like Highbury. It's surrounded by government buildings, not the least of which is the Pentagon, high-rise residences, and Costco, and its main use in recent years has been for Cavalia's tent, so it'll never happen, but a man can dream.
I don't have anything to add in the way of stadium news, but here's an interesting WaPo article from early December about Long Bridge Park: http://www.washingtonpost.com/local...cherry-trees/2011/11/22/gIQAEPDJMO_story.html
