Everyone already know about the draft and the results. Lot of surprises in my opinion, especially Seattle taking Andrew Duran with three Generation Adidas players still available. Here are some interviews after they were picked.

Reaction to yesterday's supplemental draft: This is encouraging! Lots of opportunities here for graduating college players.

Question: when someone is picked up in the supplemental draft, are they signed in a formal way with a salary?

No. They get the opportunity to be in camp, and effectively try-out, with a possibility of being signed if they survive the cut down.

I submit that it might be advantageous not to get drafted in the last round of the supplemental draft. The player can request a try-out or camp invite to the team that is the best fit for the player.

Thanks for the clarification. In other words, the supplemental draft is equivalent to being called into preseason camp to try out.

JoeSoccer, I like your point--the draft may be in the shop window, but there are other ways to get looked at that give the player more say in who he plays for. You imply that early round supplemental draft picks have a better chance of getting signed. What about the Super Draft? Are those players guaranteed a spot on the roster?

According to this short piece by Lisa Eisenmenger, the roster has to be set by March 1, so players basically have six weeks to show their stuff:

MLS Supplemental Draft sends 75 players to clubs

The headline gives a glamorous spin to the real story. I wonder how many of those 75 will be signed.

Very few draftees have signed contracts. The GA and the few seniors (off the top of my head: Cascio, Deleon, Finlay (late), Hedges, Townsend) had signed contracts which while not 100% that they'll make a roster would require something stupendous not to be retained.

Everyone else has an invitation to camp. The higher someone is picked the more likely the team will not cut them early. Give them time to acclimate - also the team doesn't look foolish.

Won't a lot of these guys end up on reserve rosters? $11k/year?

    11K/year doesn't exist anymore.

So they get the minimum of $32K? I know they brought the reserve league back last year as there was a local kid who played for the Fire while still in HS, but the roster had a mix of backups and college kids. My main question was do the teams maintain $$ a separate squad of reserves beyond the normal roster limitations or do they need to make the main roster?

I have a question that's not worth a whole new thread, so I'll stick it in here.

The 75 players listed in the supplemental draft are almost all drawn from a broad range of colleges, but one player listed is from Peru (the country) with no US college affiliation listed. I also see young guys, from the US and elsewhere, drop in and out of MLS camps (for tryouts, etc.) all the time.

    So here's the question:

Can any (unsigned, and thus available) player in the world be drafted, or are there some stated limitations? [Thanks in advance]

Not really a college soccer question, Tim. The easy part of the answer is that there is a list of draft eligible players, so if you're not on it, you won't be drafted.

As for the requirements for getting onto that list, Todd only knows.

Teams need to request a player be added; then MLS needs to approve. Of course, the devil is in the details. What is the criteria for approval....
