Has there been any speculation or rumors of a brazilian left back headed your way..? Cant really reveal from where I know this, but supposedly a young brazilian left back from Botafogo..?

There were mentions from a couple of different MLS writers that the team was pursuing a left back on the international transfer market rather than selecting one from the SuperDraft. That was pretty much the extent of it.

My main concern is that while he's a big striker who can hold up the ball, his scoring record is terrible. We need goals end of story. I'm not excited by a striker who can't stay at a team more than a year and who comes with an average scoring record of 1/4 (with Wiki down I can't get an exact number but it's about there from what I recall).

I also think after a few abysmal years, the FO owes us an inspired signing, not going after journeymen MLS players. And after all this talk about scouting all over the world, we come up with one foreign player (that we know of)? We've had over 15 years to develop a scouting network, yet we allow the likes of Portland to gobble up wonderful talent while our foreign players average a season and a half max. Does Klinsi still offer consulting gigs?! Toronto seem to be in a better place.

Thanks for the update! It's great to read that Da Fonte has done well in preliminary testing.

following our strange new friend's history, he seems attached to this Fonte kid somehow.

here's a YA thread about him:

my biggest question: who is Steve? King? ... and what's the Cooper test - do they throw a ball in the air near goal and then you run smack over/thru your defender but miss the ball entirely, you're graded as how much you resemble Kenny Cooper on a scale from 1 to 10?

Aint gonna happen with Uncle Wil's small pockets. It's getting harder to find international gems that cost a pittance.

Nobody said anything about Maicon Santos making intelligent runs off the ball.

That's what I was thinking about US Soccer Rep. Way too interested in just one guy that no one else seems to know about.
Also, the Cooper test, I think, is a 12 minute run for distance.

No longer a near news or rumor:

    http://www.dcunited.com/press-release/2012/01/maicon-santos-acquired

his shot to shot-on-goal ratio seems pretty bad to me.
    2011: Shots: 92 SOG: 15 -- 16% Goals: 8

half of sog turning into goals isn't too bad, but the other one makes me think of Albright.

    Doesn't help matters... I count:

    Academy/Youth Team - C'deBaca (u23 team), Oduran (academy)

College - Berhanu, da Fonte, Goody, Swaim

Dropped by another team - Dykstra, Houapeu, Richter

    Lower League - Touray

    Ex-DC - Zayner

    3 Keepers, 1 Defender, 3 Midfielders, and 4 Forwards.

The most exciting are the academy/youth team players. Oduran played at University of Maryland and C'deBaca was at Georgetown. The others are just adding nothing but lower depth at best which is disheartening.

Of the rest, I hope Dykstra makes it as I've played against him and he's a nice guy who has talent, just needs consistency.

Still holding out for some inspiration!

He was just brutal last year with Dallas. But to be fair, that whole team had no scoring punch up top and Santos often found himself alone up there. He'll probably find the going better playing next to DeRo.

Ouch that is poor. Without following him the previous seasons, just based on his poor SOG, it sounds like he's used to getting balls lobed up to him far from goal and he spends most of his time shooting outside the 18.

    Still need a goal scorer.

Im assuming that, while he may get some goals, he will help the rest of our attackers, get goals. He is the kind of 9 who can occupy defenders. Hopefully that opens up more space for the rest.

Scoring is always nice, but I'd rather have big and holds up the ball well to link with players than say ..... somewhat opportunistic/dangerous in front of the goal but super selfish and losses the ball if a defender stares at him too hard. DC has plenty of attacking talent. They need someone to hold the ball and link up with our very dangerous midfield.

Further, our young bad defense was constantly under pressure after weak give-aways last season. Forwards losing balls too easily and leading to counter attacks was one of DC's greatest problems last season.

You really haven't heard of it? It's pretty commonly used. Basically a 12 minute run

    http://www.topendsports.com/testing/tests/cooper.htm

I will be pretty satisfied if we can get both Boskovic and DeRo on the field at the same time.

And I recall Maicon Santos as a big handful. Definitely not the type of player we have had in a while...okay, Allsop was supposed to be that player, but never really pulled it off. Even if he doesn't start he is a good type to have on the bench.

    Yeah, re: Maicon Santos,
Yeah, it's worse than Pontius, whose efficiency I've criticized in the past.

I hope you're not holding your breath, because there is no major signing or "inspiration" until item number one, the stadium situation, is solved. Until then, this team is the Island of Misfits and/or FC Waiver Wire.

Nope, never recall hearing that phrase before. Everyone talks about the beep test.
So it's basically a really long sprint? Is it long enough for any "turtle vs hare" logic to creep in and test one's intelligence along with their lung capacity or just speed?

Since no cop would chase a person for 12 straight minutes, there should be no reason to ever run that long :D

I agree to some effect. However, our only true attacking threat is Najar, DeRo, and Pontius. Pontius is injury prone, DeRo will hopefully maintain his level but he has seen sophomore slumps in the past, and Najar, while a threat, isn't going to put up the numbers we'll need if we're not putting out a goal scoring striker.

Boskovic isn't a threat, he's a play-maker. Kitchen isn't a threat, he'll play the Simms role. Our strikers are an aged Wolff and Brettschneider who has talent, but we haven't seen much of an end product yet. The rest of the attacking threat are rookies or mediocre wingers.

It takes one injury to our main three attacking players to completely negate any momentum we may bring into this season.

Now that's as things stand. But I'm still holding out that Benny will pull a rabbit out of the hat because...

...without hope for inspiration, we might as well be discarded toys :D

This. While Santos probably won't score dozens of goals, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see him score around what Davies got last year. There were lots of complaints last year that Davies was going down too quickly and we needed a bigger bruiser type forward up top with some level of scoring presence as secondary. That's what Santos is. DeRo and he had a fairly good run of form together (albeit short). From the dcunited.com story on his signing:
DeRo seemed to like him, never a bad thing. I think with the attacking talent we already have (Pontius, Najar, Boskovic, DeRo, maybe DeLeon), the team is looking at adding to the core of current players and playing off the system we already have, rather than really changing the core/playing system that started to establish itself last season.

It's purpose is just to test aerobic endurance.
The goal is for the athlete to run as far as they can in that 12 minute time. The distance is then compared to a chart to come up with the VO2max number.
They're not strictly racing eachother per se, they're just trying for a good number.

The stats say we probably don't 'need a goalscorer' (at least, not like we need defense). DC was 4th in the league in scoring, and while we lose Davies, that was with Pontius, DeRosario and Boskcovic all spending significant stints not with the team.
