I think it's just a matter of time until the U14 Academy League is announced for next season by USSF. Thereby forcing the Revs to have a team, because as the Revs have stated, they won't have a U14 team unless the academy expands(completely ignoring the pre-academy league).

Ummm ... yes. One of them was just hired by Colorado to be their coach.
There's been a lot of comments so far this offseason about Jay Heaps being "excited" or something to that effect. That really means nothing to the product on the field. Pete Carroll was also very "pumped and jacked."
Agreed. The more I'm thinking about it, the more I'm wondering why this particular hire. Nothing at all against Miller, but this completely seems to go against the "experienced" assistant they wanted ... since he's got no experience coaching pros.
The Revs won't do anything first. Many of their fans have said they shouldn't be the first, after all.

Somebody said that this hiring, (Miller), was "outside the box".

Really? To me this is their SOP.

This club has never been willing to pony up the effort, or money, to actually have an effing box to begin with.

that was exactly my point Monty. People with that level of experience are not looking to take on a new assistant coaching job (at a likely lower salary to boot), they are looking for head coaching jobs.

If you want to state that Pareja should have been hired over Heaps, then that makes sense to me, but expecting that type of experience level to move laterally at possibly a lower salary does not make sense to me.

Whoa now, all I said is no one would have argued if the Revs had found an assistant like that. And it does happen - Dennis Sarachan, Octavio Zambrano, Mike Jefferies (Duke grad originally from Lynn). As time passes and more teams enter the league, there's more ex-coaches to choose from. Yet someone with a strong resume as an assistant in MLS or in foreign leagues would have done the trick too. Really anybody with pro-level experience. It's a fairly large pool.

As for the rarity of having an ex-head coach as your assistant, the Revs hired a head coach with no coaching experience at all. That's a rarity too. Heaps and Burns even acknowledged they were going to need an atypical assistant coach. Miller's certainly outside the norm, but he leaves a glaring hole on the staff in terms of pro-level management. The Revs set themselves up to need a rare commodity and they didn't really get it in Miller.

    This is true.

If I am not mistaken, only Heaps, Kries and Nowak of the current coaches had no real previous coaching experience.

Olsen had a touch before he was hired if memory serves. Klopas had only coaching experience indoors I think.

Since there is very little talent on the current roster a superior fitness level will be the only way this team will be able to stay alive in games and compete.

I've decided I'm holding NICK DOWNING solely responsible for the success of this team in 2012.

This better be Fagundez by next week.....

I know it's not as a assistant but Thomas Rongen was hired as the director of Toronto FC's youth academy.
TFC takes it's academy seriously unlike the revs.

Mariner has so many more resources(financially) to work with than Burns does it is almost unfair to compare. It is nice to see the league in general taking the academies seriously. It will just be yet another area we fall behind in.

So we can peg that one on Krafty. I wonder how much he would spend on a Patriots youth academy if they existed in football.

How much does he spend to host the high school super bowls?

I'd guess at least 10 times that much.

It's interesting that the above posters see this a Toronto doing something special that the Revs would never do while I see this as a case of "Oh how the mighty have fallen". :D

Super point. I hadn't thought of this angle, but it makes a lot of sense.

    I think it's a great signing.

This guys been involved in preparing and scouting for the world cup and we're worrying about him not having MLS experience?

As for MLS experience, Heaps has loads of that on his own. Miller bring experience coaching at a lot of different levels, different competitions and different age groups, so I think he's bringing an awful lot to the table.

I don't think they were looking for someone with pro coaching experience as much as someone capable of strategizing at that level. He'll be able to do that.

I like the hiring of Downing also - Heaps clearly has identified conditioning as a major area where we can improve (and he's had a birds-eye view of the program).

Given the challenge of our opening series of 2012 games, I think we'll quickly see the how the JJ's work out as a hiring strategy.

Nick Downing? All I'm gonna say is welcome back. The team now has a name it can blame for what will be our continuing and inevitable field turf caused injuries.

Post game June 2nd 2012 : "Well given our bad run of injuries this season, and the players left to fill the roster tonight against Chicago, I felt we played competitively and showed signs of being able to turn things around this season. I'm proud of our guys, even though it's not the scoreline I know our fans deserve."

Downing should help with the muscle injuries.

As for Miller, all I can say is he must have come cheap.

Looks like the Revs are expecting to hire at least one more assistant coach who will also double as the reserve team coach.

That link also shows what other hires in the organization they are looking to fill. No mention though of the player analyst position so I am unsure where they stand with that.

Dennis Hamlett just got signed as an assistant...so former head coaching types are certainly willing to take those jobs

If there is no sign of the analyst position under help wanted, I may be going out on a limb but it's probably been filled.

I just meant that it was not listed as either filled or open in the link. The position doesn't even exist on the web site. Not sure if you looked at the link I provided.

As for "the help wanted", it was taken down more than a month ago as they had a bunch of candidates who applied but they were not suppose to even start formal interviewing until this week. They may have filled it though this week (although with the combine and draft maybe they got too busy) and maybe they will update the web site link I posted above.
