It would blow my mind if Beckham signs a non-DP contract. Very unlikely...but if it does happen...WOW. It could happen though. I honestly think that money is not a huge issue for him, and he just wants to get a spot on the GB team for the Olympics. And if he could do that while staying in LA, I think he would. If this does happen, everyone else in MLS would think it's absurd, and we'd become the Miami Heat of MLS...
Maybe a non-DP contract would come with some sweeteners like a stake in the club (if that's even allowed). Then I could see him doing it. Around 12% of his earnings are from his Galaxy contract. Having a stake in the club could be worth more in the long run.
It still is an issue for him, because he has huge ambitions for his retirement. I know he wants to own a sporting franchise, possibly in the MLS. I know he flirted with joining a group that was being put together to purchase the LA Dodgers, but that never materialized. I don't think money is his main motive to continue playing, but I DO think it's a factor.
I don't think this would ever happen (think he's using a clever negotiating ploy), but this would indeed be a way around the DP rule.
Maybe, maybe not. I find it entirely possible that Garber would consider a stake in the team as compensation and therefore subject to league salary cap rules. I'm speculating, but it makes sense to me.
Doesn't his contract have a clause in it to give him an opportunity to own a MLS club when it's done. I remember hearing something like that awhile ago.
Reportedly, that's true. But I doubt he could get part of the G's while still playing for them and not have it count against the cap.
Ok transfer window is open. Today is a bank holiday, but Beckahm better have made his decision public by the end of the week or his indecision does start to hurt the team. Not only that but Beckham has agents & managers who typically get a piece (5-10% each) of his contract fee. It’s their job to get him the best possible compensation. They won’t easily be giving up their take or their reputation of getting their clients a good contract. Besides the DP was created in part to stop those kinds of shannanigans e.g. Mr. Luis Hernandez and his AEG purchased Ferrari.
If the report is true that there is a rule change coming that would allow for a team to get a fourth DP, I can think of one rule change that makes a ton of sense and would allow this. What if MLS allowed a 4th DP, but he has to be an American? Currently Donovan is the only American DP. From a marketing standpoint and growing the league standpoint, this isn't ideal for MLS. I think most casual U.S. soccer fans are more familiar with guys on the national team than foreign DPs. If there are U.S. players that can command more than $400,000 per year, there should be more ways for teams to keep them.
All this talk about extra compensation... could it be related to image rights? I know Becks' original inflated contract figure included image rights, and I believe that (until recently) European teams mostly controlled their players' image rights.
What report? I love your idea on a 4th American DP. We have THE MLS player and we should have a way to keep him and keep oru team strong
Haven't heard/read anything related to possible rule changes (American/4th DP) from the usual sources (Goff, Wahl, Ives, NuNord etc) who'd know about it. So if there's more than "sources close to + English media" that came up with it in order to make up stories and link players I'd like to see it. Anyway it looks like a certain player won't say au-revoir to LA afterall, so unless changes to the rules are forthcoming or one of the other 2 DPs leaves, all the rumored/linked DP candidates remain pipe dreams for now.
Looks increasingly like Beckham will be staying http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/s...-set-to-snub-psg-to-stay-at-la-galaxy?cc=5901 Excellent news IMO, apart from the big loss of Juninho and some unexpected developments during the draft it looks increasingly likely we will looks remarkably similar come March 28(? - too lazy to look at the date)
I hope Bruce will be a little bit more active in this transfer window and make our team look not similar to the past year but better come March.
With the salary cap and all 3 DP spots filled, not really much Bruce can do other than look for some unproven "diamonds in the rough" or past-their prime veterans...
With Beckham not moving on we probably have to accept our big move in the transfer market happened in August. Christmas came early for the Galaxy and I’m okay with it.
From this Sun article: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepag...am-tells-Frank-Lampard-to-join-LA-Galaxy.html
Eddie Johnson anyone? I didn't think he was past his prime, but apparently he couldn't pass his physical for Puebla. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/01/02/gringo-report-johnson-move-puebla-reportedly No, I am not completely serious. Not sure if anyone owns his MLS rights at this point either, but EJ > CB. Just sayin'.
Yep. It's basically Juninho and Ricketts out, Sarvas in, and whatever spare parts we can fit under the cap and with the Ricketts allocation. This team is going to look very similar to last year's team. The main questions will be whether or not Sarvas can fill Juninho's shoes, and how much difference a full year of Robbie Keane makes.
Yes now that would rock if true. Keep on spreading that MLS Gospel to all your old homies still in Europe Becks. We willtake 'em over here in the states.
Eddie Johnson with the Galaxy sounds sexy but I do not know what physical condition he is in. I believe if he could of play Puebla would of kept him.
