So according to local sources (BigD) Lee is coming back to MLS and is going through the allocation process... Why? He hasn't been a National team call-up in years and was not truly ever a consideration. Why is he being dismissed as a potential FCD signing? It was stated that Dallas has a glut of players at his position, but I'm not sure why you wouldn't want more talent on the roster? Shea..... leaving Hernandez.... breaking down with age Ferriera.... ???? Villar.... Lost in Translation Guarda.... Has he ever really contributed Leyva... Tons of potential but 3 years as a pro and no, regular minutes I think we all saw what a lack of depth this team actually has. Why would we dismiss signing local talent? Obviously he has been out of the public eye for some time now and maybe he doesn't have the skill set to contribute to FCD, but I for one would be in favor of signing him, not for his local ties, so much as his ability to provide cover for what may look like a glut on this team but in reality is only one injury or transfer away from being completely exposed.
I read it was going to be weighted lottery (a la Bruno) and not allocation. At any rate, if there's any one team driving the signing, that team will end up with him. Nobody's going to get a king's ransom in exchange for a guy with size issues who's been wasting away in the Vietnamese league for two (three?) years.
he trained with FCD last year, they looked into signing him, but their offer (or what they wanted to offer) and what Lee wnated were way off. If he's going into weighted lottery then he's getting a low $ from MLS. Probably in line with what FCD wanted to sign him for at that time.
He's a small, speedy right footed winger right? If so, then that may be the least position in which FCD needs help. Jackson and Chavez are pretty much interchangible there. No offense, but please put all availible resources in forward and defense (assuming John leaves). Next year we worry again about depth.
He has signed, weighted lottery to come... http://www.socceramerica.com/article/44917/texan-lee-nguyen-returns-from-vietnam.html
Buzz, I hate to differ with you, but if I recall, it was the spring of 2010 that he wanted to sign with FCD - and the problem was not what FCD was willing to pay him, but what MLS was willing to pay him. I remember it was Jan, 2010 because I had just joined twitter and he was posting tweets about signing with FCD. Of course, it could have played out again last spring, but I just don't remember that happening.
Well whenever it was, FCD had a look at him already and didn't ask MLS to sign him for more than the min. Which should tell you a lot. Think of how bad FCD was in SH's eyes back then. Which is not to say FCD won't put in for the weighted lottery... By the way the weighted lottery is how MLS distributes players who pass the MLS draft and go to Europe... don't "make it"... then sign with MLS later... Usually MLS forces them to take the offer they would have gotten if they had been in the MLS draft... i.e. the minimum offer LN passed up two years ago. MLS doesn't "reward" players for skipping their draft. So my guess is that LN has now taken the offer he turned down two years ago.
Would not be surprised to see him wind up in Houston where they have a large Vietnamese Community, and could be a great draw for their new stadium....
F' that! He's from Dallas and the Vietnamese community in Dallas is close to that in Houston. I like all the local boys: Hernandez, Ugo, Shea, Loyd, Bruno (sort of) and of course the homegrowns. Let's get another one!
Steve Davis retweeted someone today saying that if Colorado got Lee it would be a Nguyen/Wynne situation. Insert groan here.
I agree, I think that if he came back to Dallas and performed very well (Shea caliber atleast), then the large Viet and maybe SE asian community would take note with this team. The cost of going to see them play is fair, so I think he could bring in those casual fans. We'll never know now with him going to Van though.
