I said nothing of revenue. They are bigger brands already, meaning that shirtspace on an MLS jersey hardly increases general awareness. People in Singapore and Sao Paulo know Facebook, Apple and Google but there are folks in San Jose who don't know our team or even the league.
Best Buy was "bigger" than the Fire when they sponsored them, right? Not sure how you're quantifing "bigger", but I think you're going to lose this one.
You guys have it backwards. The body is orange, the trim is hot pink. (Plus everyone knows that if you use a pink jersey for a men's team, the pink has to be light, what we crayola alums call "carnation," not breast cancer pink!) I have a tournament this weekend and should go to bed except now I want to crank up the photoshop and show you.
i won't. i just wanted to get that idea on paper so that we all know what it looks like and why it should be avoided. that being said, its a great look for houston come breast cancer awareness month
Okay, how about "significantly bigger?" Best Buy is hardly on the same level with any of the three suggested, as it merely survived an era which ate up retailers like Circuit City and Good Guys. Apple just topped Exxon as the world leader in market capitalization. Google is certainly not far behind. Facebook is a nonstarter, as every team around uses it to advertise themselves already. There are plenty of SV firms with the money to spend but low profiles among the general public. I'm not knocking the notion that the Quakes could find a wealthy local sponsor, just set the sights lower. But maybe the new Epicenter will bring the team up at the same time, making the team (jersey, stadium, etc) more viable for advertising among wealthier companies. Let's hope.
I think my wife would call those ... CFMP. I'll ask her. And, I want the new jerseys to be Blue!! Blue!! Blue!! Know what I'm sayin? GO QUAKES!!! FIRE FRANK!! - Mark PS - The wife says CFMP for the color blind.
I get the sinking feeling I'm beating a dead horse here, but according to these Fortune 500 rankings I just pulled up here are the rankings in terms of Revenue and profit for 2011. (http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/2011/full_list/) 35. Apple 47. Best Buy 92. Google I think Best Buy is definitely within this class of companies. Also, Toyota smacked their naming rights on the Fire's stadium, surely Toyota is a more recognizable brand than the Fire right? I think back to an old marketing teacher I once had who asked why, if Coke and McDonalds were so successful, why they bothered to keep advertising? You got to stay top of mind, and MLS is a way of reaching a particular demographic. Large or small, this stuff is still important to big companies.
Man, I had to look that up in the Urban Dictionary: "Come ******** Me Pumps 1. High-heeled shoes that are asking for trouble 2. Stilettos 3. Whoa girl..."
(sticks head out of the cave) I was thinking about this just today. Funny thing is, I've never seen Google advertise. It hasn't hurt them yet. At this point, I couldn't see them spending the money to do it. It helps that Google doesn't have the rivals that Coke and Micky D's have. Apple, however, is ubiquitous. However, I get the idea they've got some "high-minded" idea that they don't want to limit their "brand" to a specific team. I could be wrong here, and if anyone has any examples, I'd love to see them. With the death of Steve Jobs, the direction of Apple could change, and I wouldn't mind seeing their logo on the shirt. Hell, at this point I'll even take El Mexicano (Marquez Brothers on line one please). Anything but f-ing Amway, and their ilk. (It's been awhile since I've posted regularly, can we curse yet?) (goes back into cave)
Hi Guy. Good to see your name again! Just wanted to point out that while Google doesn't advertise regularly, they have. They ran a spot during the Super Bowl (2010? not exactly sure). It got very good reviews. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnsSUqgkDwU"]Parisian Love - YouTube[/ame] Hope to see you at a game next season!
Yeah, I should have asked my wife. She pulled out an old pair of boots (from before we met) a while back and said, these were my "F-me now boots". Thanks dear, I really needed to hear that. You mind trying them on again...........?
Fair enough, as I also forgot DC and Volkswagen. And the Timbers had Toyota on their shirts in the USL. Chicago's shirt sponsorship, however, coincided with the arrival of Blanco. I guess the issue is not so much the company involved as how much they feel like paying. I can't find what Toyota paid for the Timbers USL shirt space, but I assume it was less than for the stadium naming rights in Bridgeview. We'll just have to see who buys into the target price range that Kaval (or whoever) sets.
Yeah, I think that's more it. I can't imagine that SJ looked around the country and said, , "yeah, Amway is definitely a company we want to be associated with." Rather, I suspect they were willing to pay more than anyone else. It'd be nice to have a respectable sponsor, but who knows these days. Freakin' Barcelona has "Qatar Foundation" on the front of their shirts now. What's happened to world football?!!
I think the VC will probably be making angry calls if they see their capital being used to spread their name around MLS. Though using their Santana Row presence as an example, they would probably love to be on the front of a top ELP or La Liga team jersey.
I agree with the first point, though their money backers would probably be consulted before they were to do anything like this. As far as your second point, where do they see their market at this time? Primarily US, or worldwide?
When I watch games from other countries, I see Fujitsu, Hyundai, Kia (same difference), Ford, Voit, and many other well known brands that do a lot of business here in the States that do not advertise for MLS. I wonder how we might convert some of those to MLS sponsors? I've no idea. This isn't my field at all. But I'd love to see more support from some of those. Didn't Glidden drop their shirt sponsorship of the Crew? I was hoping they'd stick around. For us, I'd love to see OSH as our shirt sponsor. That would be cool, but I don't see them coming up with nearly enough money for that. Ah ha! As you might have guessed, my wife's sense of humor runs towards the ribald. She can be a lot of fun. She also sometimes describes shoes as "f-me hard" shoes. I guess I should have paid more attention to women's footware back when I was single. GO QUAKES!! FIRE FRANK!! - Mark
