1860 say he's the son of a Greek and a German-American. ...José Holebas, der als Sohn einer Deutsch-Amerikanerin und eines Griechen in Aschaffenburg geboren...
It would be nice if yanks-abroad.com or another US soccer media outlet would contact him on this, rather than random BS YA posters. Or better yet, USSF. Meaning no disrespect to I'm a Puppy. Better than nothing. Fact is, if this guy is eligible for us, he's probably good enough to make the team and maybe to start. It's worth the 10 minutes spent on a phone call or an e-mail from the powers that be.
Completely agree and no disrespect taken. Anyway just some news, I'm now in contact with Jose now and if he was willing (and eligible of course) it would be great if Brian or someone else from YA would like to interview him. I am not the only one who thinks its a big deal that we have an eligible kid in his prime at Olympiakos, so I think it would be cool to get his story.
I'm not completely sure yet, he might not even know because he seemed surprised he even had a thread about him. That's why it would be cool if Brian or Dave or another one of the YA pros wanted to take this...I am waiting for a response from him after asking where his mother was born, because isn't that what matters?
Alright so an update after speaking with Jose: His mother was born in Germany and is German-Uruguayan*. His father is Greek as earlier reported. He is not eligible. But good find none the less Dave. EDIT: *Now that I look over the conversation his mother may not be Uruguayan, I was going off of what i misread in the first post, but regardless neither of his parents were born in the U.S. His mother was born in Germany, and his father in Greece.
A bit of an update from nowhere, Jose still plays for Olympiacos and even has a cap for the Greek National Team. His name translated from Greek to English is Iosif Cholevas.
... and (forgive the bump, but some of you will recall this thread from a few years back) he is in fact the "Cholevas" who is playing for Greece against Costa Rica at this very moment. http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/players/player=358022/index.html
Fish? I must have missed something. More's the pity. I spent some time thinking about the "Guys who weren't Yanks who we (or, frankly, usually 'I') briefly obsessed about" category. It's quite the lineup. Some names that came to mind were Bradley Johnson, Shawn Kauter, Davide Somma, Romone Rose, Kristian Haynes and of course: https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/american-trialist-at-st-mirren.577545/#post-12349207
