Latest article on the Bay Area protesters and police action that took place today: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/11/20/MNDF1M1SH4.DTL&tsp=1 Some relevant quotes from the article: "I'm not going to do anyone any good in jail," (Protester who packed his belongings to leave in case the police comes.) "It was very confusing. It seemed like half the cops were saying, 'I really don't want to be here doing this.' And the other half of the cops were loving slamming nerds." (San Francisco Protester) "Oakland ... supports upholding free speech and peaceful forms of expression, but the cost of the encampments is growing and putting a strain on our already fragile resources," (Oakland Mayor Jean Quan) "I understand people are tired of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, but you got to respect that people live here too," (Oakland Neighbor who used to be homeless) "It's like 'Days of our Lives,' the hippie version," she said at Frank Ogawa Plaza, referring to protest organizers arguing with each other and lacking a focus. "This week was just extremely virulent." (Oakland Protester) "It's like a whack-a-mole, we'll just pop up somewhere else." (Oakland Protester from Redding)
Am I right to think how ridiculously overblown the UC Davis incident was is an indication that these people are getting desperate?
Just shows how Faux News, big business/lobby/banking and the Reps can bring too many Americans into thinking that what conservatism is believed to stand for today is good for them.
No. Thank god demographics will render the (evil as opposed to conservative part of the) GOP powerless in 20 years. At some point, you run out of idiots who'll believe your shit and remotely reasonable excuses to disenfranchise other people.
I'd like to believe this, but the people who already believe this shit in their 20's, want to breed like the Duggars.
You need to clarify, because the word evil seems to be overused lately. By calling part of the GOP evil, who specifically are you referring to? Recently I hear people calling the rich evil, the federal government evil, the state government evil, the local government evil, wall street evil, banks and financial institutions evil, corporations and businesses evil, consumers evil... It seems like pretty much everybody who actually has a role in creating jobs is being called evil by some people. I guess high unemployment has that reaction in people.
I wonder if the cities are going to go after these illegal campers: http://moneyland.time.com/2011/11/1...ng-out-for-black-friday-sales/?xid=gonewsedit
The ones actually running the GOP show behind the scenes and who have been successful over the last 30 years in convincing a large number of people to vote against their interests through effective use of new media to present propaganda as news. At some point, the damage they've done to the nation will accumulate to the point where they can no longer continue on the current trajectory. Duggan jokes aside, their base of support is shrinking and move so far to the right that it has completely lost touch with the center. The demographics are turning against them on the culture war red meat dog whistle issues that they have used so successfully in the past to get their economic legislative and regulatory goals accomplished. The recent dramatic attempts to enact laws specifically designed to disenfranchise Democrats smack of desperation to me. Eventually these players will die or lose control and a new, actually conservative, center-right Republican party will emerge, probably with a much more libertarian strain built into it. Either that or we're actually hosed as a nation, something I'd rather not consider an option. Evil = People willing to actively subvert democracy, education, and basic rights in order to achieve personal goals
Yes there is. There's also something wrong about a country that thinks nothing of asking retail workers to completely sacrifice any meaningful family time on the holidays.
F**k everyone that participates in this bullshit. It's one thing to open early on Friday. But companies like Walmart, ToysRUs, and Target can burn in hell. I would love for a big chain to publicly announce that they're forgoing the "arms race" on opening earlier every year by saying they would never treat their employees this poorly.
I thought you might say something like "the one percent", but you come back describing the likes of Nestor (RIP) and Cristina Kirchner. Nicely done. Fair enough, if you want to define evil in terms of damaging a nation's democratic institutions selfishly then I'll concur that some elements of the GOP are indeed evil. But that kind of evil is not just a patrimony of the right.
I recall just a few years ago during a deserved bout of Wal-Mart bashing that I was told how I should shop at Target because they treated their employees so much better (though it's not like the Chinese workers made any more money on the same products that were sold at Target that were sold at Wal-Mart) and would never engage in such terrible treatment of it's workers that WM did. So much for that bullshit.
On the other hand I have never seen anyone change a baby on a washing machine in a Target. So they have that going for them.
I'm not going shopping this week, that's for sure. I want the city to evict these morons, for the sake of consistency.
I wonder if the media will portray the people camping out to be the first person into a Wal-Mart as shit-slinging, cholera-carrying menaces to public health and safety? Will the police use earthmovers to remove their tents?
http://smallbusinesssaturday.com/ Two points: 1. It's kinda ironic that this is the brainchild of AmEx. 2. It's a great idea. I actually make it a small business shopping season every year. Zero gifts from big chains. The gifts I find tend to be much more personal and appreciated as a result.
If they were there for weeks with no intention of leaving, crapp and piss all over the parking lot, then yes, remove them.
Of course the decisions about how the media should portray the different encampments are all made by "The One Percent" at the Chamber of Commerce. It's actually determined on an individual basis, by calculating each encampment's P/PP ratio*. *Poop to Profit Potential ratio.
if the shoppers were demanding that the stores forgive them their credit card debts they are about to accumulate, then i'm sure the stores would be calling the cops
I always try to deal with small local businesses whenever I can, not just during the holidays but year round. But I have to admit that sometimes the chains do have some really good deals.
