Interesting article on Bigapplesoccer.com quoting Don Garber about the new Cosmos: http://www.bigapplesoccer.com/teams/redbulls2.php?article_id=28745 "I don't know they're [the Cosmos] involved," he [Commissioner Garber] said. "They've got some things they're trying to work out in their ownership group. As I've said many times, I applaud what they're doing. They've done a great job building their brand. And when they're ready to get that team launched, if they want to be a part of it, we'll be happy to talk to them." There's more in the article that leads me to believe that the new Cosmos organization isn't very organized. The article suggests other ownership groups may usurp the Cosmos for the 20th MLS franchise. Other articles have suggested the same. So the second New York franchise, likely to be in Queens (or Randalls Island according to this new article) may not be named "Cosmos." If this is what the tea leaves are indicating, would it make sense for the Red Bulls to get in bed with the new owners of the Cosmos name and re-brand the current team in Harrison? I would argue that the New York team that has the "Cosmos" name will instantly become New York's premier soccer franchise -- most followed locally, and most marketable internationally. If the current Cosmos ownership group doesn't have enough money for the $100-million franchise fee, and doesn't have enough money to build a stadium, wouldn't selling the name and logo to the Red Bulls be in the Cosmos' best interest? Wouldn't acquiring the Cosmos name be in the Red Bulls' best interest?
More on the topic: http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/socce...ffe_lead_OsmUuVvR6mgucJhFNZni1I#ixzz1aZ1izLDZ "*** MLS commissioner Don Garber was at the game, hosting three potential investors for a second New York expansion club in his box…and none were from the New York Cosmos group, which has undergone some ownership changes. He wouldn’t commit on how the Wilpon family’s court case impacts their interest, but said Randalls Island has come into play as a possible site."
The laughs just keep coming. Byrne calling Randall's Island "the birthplace of the New York Cosmos" is almost as humorously ignorant as his claim their U8s play 4-3-3. Red Bull already tried to buy the name. While I would prefer NY's original MLS franchise to have the identity and be able to overtly celebrate the legacy with NY's most famous soccer franchise historically, I wouldn't want to give this bunch a dime.
I remember that one team before was playing at Randall Island I forget the name of this team and in 1970s they change they name to Cosmos and enjoy the league, so Randall Island is the birthplace of the Cosmos.....
Wrong. The Cosmos played at Yankee Stadium (1971) and Hofstra (1972-73) before they played at Downing Stadium on Randall's Island. Maybe the previous team you were thinking of was the New York Generals (1968) but they A) did not become the Cosmos and B) didn't play at Randall's Island - they played at Yankee Stadium.
Another article out, another thread started, team still not anywhere close to actually being ready to join the league. Yawn.
1. I liked this thread better under MLS news. 2. NYFC OR FCNY will do just fine for a team name. Kemsley overpaid for Cosmos trademark. it's totally worthless if he isn't in the ownership group.
Why someone would have posted it to the Energy Drink FC board I'll never know. And after reading it.. they would have been better to lock it rather than move it.
Anytime you have a thread with Dr K commenting on it and you move it to the boards where Metrogo roams - just not good.
I want a three-way with Serena Williams and Hope Solo. (I likes 'em strong!) I think at this point I have a better chance of getting Serena and Hope into the sack together than the Cosmos do of being affiliated with MLS. I think a second NY MLS team is a done deal. But not with the Cosmos.
Blows Venus away. I approve this message. I don't know, something about Hope Solo that doesn't get the juices flowing.
Yeah Serena beats Venus hands down, I agree. But seeing Hope in the ESPN Magazine Body Issue watering her lawn definitely enticed a positive reaction. But Alicia Sacramone's pic blew everyone else out of the water.
