Could the Somerville site be the site rumored by people in this thread to be making progress after all? This is a bit of a stretch but there are a lot of articles about the green line extension regaining momentum (after the state had recently stated the project completion would be delayed until 2020). http://articles.boston.com/2011-09-27/yourtown/30209111_1_delay-funding-increases-air-quality http://www.wickedlocal.com/somerville/news/x26163997/Organization-secures-500M-in-funding-for-Green-Line-Extension#axzz1YpFmGSqZ The article above talks about hoping to have the Washington St station (Brickbottom) open by 2016. The link below is for a Somerville City sponsored meeting about Brickbottom and Innerbelt next Wednesday. Could this be a first step in progressing a Revs stadium at the site? http://unionsquaremain.org/2011/09/inner-belt-and-brickbottom-visioning-meeting/ The official greenline extension website states that the next public meeting is the week after and is regarding the maintenance facility. The 2008 stadium study proposed to build the stadium over the maintenance facility. http://www.greenlineextension.org/ Finally here is a link to a NESN Liverpool mail bag question and response. I have no idea if the author has any inside knowledge but he does mention the Somerville site (although downplaying it a bit). http://www.nesn.com/2011/09/liverpool-mailbag-sebastian-coatess-baptism-by-fire-free-speech-and-dinner-advice.html We'll see in the next few weeks if either of these meetings make mention of a stadium at all...
http://www.cbtarchitects.com/urban-design/master-plans/public-sector/index.php?id=258 One more link. CBT's website now shows the Brickbottom / Innerbelt project. The images included don't show much, but they do show a section cut through a stadium with roof over a train storage area, and a whimsical rendering that if you look at closely shows a grandstand with roof. The grandstand is the structure where the image is being projected from. Its not much or even mentioned in the text but its the closest thing to Somerville stadium porn.
Interesting, I hadn't seen that before... Are you referring to this image? To the right it looks like it could be a stadium design, but the aisle between the two sections is too wide and people in the upper tier wouldn't even be able to see the pitch. Aside from that, it's the closest thing to an actual stadium design I've ever seen with this project
That looks to be a slightly revised image from a report that's a good 3-4 years old now. The following is from the Inner Belt/Brickbottom Scoping Study from November 2008:
I've been telling people for months...I keep seeing new piles of dirt there..! Oh yea..Wonderland and Boston Common also!!
Don't know about you Tom...But, I just had to catch my breath.. and possibly go looking for my "Kraft" Patriots Jersey that I soaked in lighter fluid, but never burned. Now, let's see..is it buried under that yellow brown circle in the backyard?...or...
That rendering is not new. It's about three years old when it seemed Brickbottom only needed to wait for the T to decide where to locate their Train maintenance facility. Since then, the T has kicked the can down the road a few times, in terms of when they will do something.... it's now out to something like 2018 or 2022 and who knows how much more.... Somerville is mounting a challenge and maybe even a legal challenge to get the T to stop kicking the can. But I think most people would agree that this site has gone stone cold. I've stopped thinking about Brickbottom for sometime now. Lately, the sites I feel are viable would be (in no particular order) Wonderland, Suffolk downs (if no casino there), Somewhere near Northeastern, Franklin Park, South Boston waterfront (ya, as if), Southfield (former Weymouth Airbase), Foxboro, Allston (I have no evidence at all about this, only a feeling Harvard might be willing to spin off some land), A rebuilt Nickerson Field, in partnership with B.U. (again, only my wild speculation). That's about all I can come up with.
I find it odd that there are rumors of pending stadium news right as there have been developments with the Somerville T project. I have a feeling that this location may not be as dead as we had all thought.
Here's to hoping you are right and I am wrong.... Because, I do think Somerville is the most desirable site, other than the Seaport District and we know that's pie-in-the-sky.
It was supposedly pushed back until 2018 or 2020. However, there has been recent news about the project being pushed up and receiving more funding with a 2016 completion date being floated around. Boston Globe Wicked Local
It was just my inner Soccer Doc shining through, a true moment of weakness. I guess everyone has a little Kool-Aid in there blood...
So let's get this straight--if the "rumor" is tied to the Brickbottom development, a stadium couldn't realistically be completed AT LEAST until the station itself was completed in 2016, if not later. And it's already a given that this project could be further delayed for any number of reasons out of the Krafts' control. How do you unveil something that's at least 5 years out and dependent upon crazy amounts of government planning as a season ticket renewal booster for 2012? I mean, just last year, it was 12-24 months for the stadium, and now the horizon would be pushed back to 5 years or longer. Add to this the Krafts' noted history of saying they were staying quiet so as not to risk ruining the plans, and an imminent announcement on a Somerville site sounds preposterous. It would give years for NIMBY groups and anti-stadium/anti-congestion groups to line up against it. Let's face it--if Somerville truly is the site, we're just now entering the phase that DC United has been in for years. They had a site all picked out, too.
Fitton Field Renovations?? I believe The Krafts should look into possibly assisting Holy Cross and renovating Fitton Field in Worcester, MA. This facility would need modest renovations. But already holds 25k and is right off I-290, and is centrally located in the "heart of New England". Sky boxes/Luxury Suites would be have to be added, but I hear that Holy Cross is in the process of looking at renovating the stadium completely. I believe this would be a cheaper route, the only major snag is that field turf would be the best option since it would cross up with Holy Cross Football games on Saturdays. Has anyone heard of the Krafts looking into Worcester as an option, also the many colleges in the area could use use a newer facility to move up in College football (Worcester State, WPI, Clark U, ect.).
Someone please explain to me how a public works project of this magnitude is going to be approved. QE3 ain't happening, bro.
Re: Fitton Field Renovations?? And -no offense, please - I believe what you say is nuts. A SSS in Foxboro, next to the man mall is even better than this folly.
Re: Fitton Field Renovations?? Go fly a kite Modest renovations? It's a piece of shit built of rotting timber and decaying rusted steel. Also, Worcester is a shithole, and too far away from the target market.
