It was expected by their opponent that FC København would be a bit tired after their mid-week Europa cup match, so it was not the Silkeborg plan to stand low in defense, but to attack and keep up the high pressure as much as possible... unfortunately being too careless in defense is not the way to play in the first 45 minutes if you want to beat FCK, which we also saw in this match where the home team easily were able to punish Silkeborg by taking the lead and also were leading 2-0 at half-time... So not too surprising, if you have been reading my match reports so far. However, the FCK players did get tired in the second half, while Silkeborg were able to turn up the pressure and could and perhaps also should have scored more than the one goal, considering that they should have been awarded a penalty and also produced a good attempt that struck the FCK woodwork. So a rather lucky escape for an FCK team that was relying much on counter attacks and set pieces.

OB Odense always have had trouble with the SønderjyskE style of play, so though they looked fairly good and also took the lead in the first half by the well playing Danish youth international Rasmus Falk, a hard working and clever playing SønderjyskE team was able to fight their way back in the second half, when OB Odense seemed to run out of gas, surely also because of their tough mid-week Champions League qualifier in Spain. Of course it only made things worse for the home team, that they got Anders Møller Christensen sent off shortly after SønderjyskE took the lead by an excellent playing Quincy Antipas who not only scored twice in this match but also made the bicycle kick assist for the header by their American attacking midfielder Conor O'Brien. Of cause OB Odense were desperately trying to push forward at the end of the match, also using Tore Reginiussen as an additional striker, despite playing 10 against 11, but SønderjyskE were cleverly punishing the home team for being too attacking minded, so a terrible home result by an Odense team that has done fairly well in the Champions League qualifiers and expect to be able to keep up with FC København in the fight for the Danish championship this season....SønderjyskE have on the other hand never before managed to pick up 12 points in the first 7 rounds of the Superliga, so this has been their best start to a season ever.

OB Odense had hoped to pick up a few reinforcements before the transfer window was closed (especially a full back), but they were turned down in the last minute by the Fiorentina full back Nikola Gulan, while they managed to get a loan deal for the rest of 2011 with the Lokomotiv Moscow striker Baye Djiby Fall who was great the last time he played in Denmark for Odense, but he was never able to settle in Russia, apparently because of some big cultural differences.

    HB Køge v AaB Aalborg, 1-4 (0-2)

The match between Køge and AaB will mostly be remembered for the poor weather conditions and a terrible pitch, better suited for water polo I guess. Aab took an early lead and though it was the home team having most possession and playing the better football in midfield, the visitors were better at taking advantage of a poor pitch that directly was the cause of the second AaB goal as the ball was stopped by a pool of water instead of reaching the HB Køge keeper, which made it an easy goal for AaB... HB Køge managed to strike back in the second half through a header by Brad Rusin, but same Rusin later misused the biggest opportunity of the match, while the AaB players just were more sharp and on target than the Køge players when they got the opportunity. Once again we got a very nice goal and solo-performance by the young striker Nicklas Helenius, who has looked surprisingly good for AaB so far this season. However, Jeppe Curth got injured in this match and has been troubled by injuries in the past, so AaB know that they are very vulnerable in this position in case of injuries. So by the help of investors, they used the last day of the transfer window to sign a 2-year contract with the Brazilian striker Kayke Rodrigues. Not really a new player as such, but still a reinforcement, considering that he had returned to his club in Brazil when his loan deal with AaB expired. But now he is back on a more permanent deal.

In the first 7 rounds, HB Køge have been at the very bottom of the table, which has only happened to a team once before in the history of the Superliga. So this shared record now belong to HB Køge and Viborg FF that had the same poor run in the 2007-08 season, but then managed to escape the bottom of the table in round 8 by beating AGF Aarhus... The goal by Brad Rusin was btw the 25th goal scored by an American player in the Superliga.

AGF Aarhus have not looked too impressive away from home so far this season, but we got an excellent performance from them in Horsens, though it didn't look all too well for the visitors the first 25 minutes or so, since Horsens were really turning on the pressure, while the AGF defense were standing much to low, though still keeping the Horsens strikers well at bay. But while Horsens had trouble breaking down the AGF defense, Søren Berg was much sharper looking when he finally got the chance and though it was a mistake by the Horsens keeper who slipped when he was about to kick the ball upfield, it was never the less a brilliant goal and lob shot by the present Superliga topscorer from the half-way line near the right edge of the center circle. From that point on AGF took full control of the match while the home team seemed paralyzed. Both Peter Graulund and Aron Jóhannsson had their opportunities to finish off Horsens even before halftime. However the home teams escaped some one-on-ones with their keeper.

While you would expect the Horsens coach and players to use the break to pull themselves together from the start of the second half, it never happened, since they also played a terrible last 45 minutes, and were never able to keep up or cope with the clever AGF play-maker Martin Jørgensen in central midfield, who also made an excellent assist when Peter Graulund scored the 100th Superliga goal of his career, which also made him among the 7th most scoring players ever in the history of the Superliga, with top-5 being within reach this season. So a big congrats to Graulund who has strangely never been picked for the Danish national team, not even a Danish League national team. It was disputed if Graulund also got his foot on the last goal of this match, that was well assisted by Søren Larsen, but Graulund was later also credited for this goal as well. In any case, AGF easily could have won this match by 5 or 6-0, if especially Jóhannsson, Graulund and Søren Larsen had more luck with their finishing, as you can also see in the highlights below.. AGF Aarhus had hoped to sign the Peruvian winger/striker Raúl Ruidíaz before the transfer window closed, but it seem that some disagreements within the Peruvian club stopped the deal. There is still a rumour though, that Danish international Lars Jacobsen may end up at AGF. He is a free agent and can be picked up after the transfer window has closed.

    FC Midtjylland v Brøndby IF, 2-1 (0-0)
    0-1 Martin Bernburg (75)

Brøndby have not had much success with their usual attacking minded style of play this season, because they have been letting too many goals in and scoring too little goals themselves. So in last weeks match in Aarhus against AGF, they were taking a much more defensive minded approach which also was their game plan in this away match. So we got a very tactical and boring match with little opportunities in the first 70 minutes or so. But when Brøndby finally took the lead with only 15 minutes left to play, I guess they believed that they could finally secure a win. However two nice goals by Jakob Poulsen and Sylvester Igboun both well assists by the FCM winger Jonas Borring soon turned the match around, while Brøndby once again threw it all away in the end. The only 6 points to Brøndby in the first 7 rounds, is their second worst performance in their history in the Superliga, so of course they were bound to do something in the last day of the transfer window... and so they did by signing a 2-year contract with 33-yo Danish international Dennis Rommedahl. However, to get some needed room in their wage budget, they have on the other hand sent their 22-yo striker Nicolaj Agger on a 4-month loan to Djurgårdens IF, which could become a real problem, since they do not look too strong in attack as it is and their only good experienced striker Martin Bernburg has very often been struck by injuries in the past, so he is not really a striker you can expect to rely all too much on.

While both OB Odense and FC København seemed tired because of their midweek Europa Cup games where they got in trouble in the second half, this did not seem to be the case at all for FC Nordsjælland that easily was able to run over a poorly playing Lyngby team... or perhaps I should rather say an unorganized Lyngby team, because so far it has been difficult to make head or tail of the actual Lyngby game plan. They seem unorganized in defense and rely way too much on the individual skills of some of their supposed key players, especially Kim Aabech who is their most creative player and also was their topscorer last season. But this season he has not done much good for this team, no doubt because he was not really match fit from the start of this season and probably also because he was involved in some transfer disputes, leading to the Danish FA investigating both him and the club during the summer. So he has really has really had his mind elsewhere and been under much pressure. In any case, the Lyngby defense especially had trouble with the two FCN wingers Andreas Laudrup and Tobias Mikkelsen, not to forget a well playing Michael Parkhurst in left back position, who made the assist for the second FCN goal and also made it to TV2 Sports 'Team of the week'. Lyngby on the other hand, hardly were able create a single opportunity worth mentioning. So this win was quite deserved and not a goal too big... So I guess that Lyngby is one on of the teams that could have been in need of some reinforcements, especially in defenses, but nothing really happened before the transfer window closed.

Very strong looking performance by AGF. That Graulund is still going strong. What a goal and what a class player. No wonder he was part of the team of the week.....

Aab starting surprisingly well. I still expect them to fall somewhat in the league. As it looks now they will hopefully not be in the risk zone of relegation. They managed that deal with Rodrigues. Well done. Shame on that injury though. But you never know in this very tight league. Köge looks set for relegation at the moment. But it´s a long season, just started.

Holstebro BK (4th level) v AC Horsens
FC Fyn (2.Div) v Silkeborg IF
    Brabrand IF (2.Div) v SønderjyskE

Some of the Danish Superliga clubs enter Round 2 of the Danish Cup and we got some big surprises straight away, since both AaB Aalborg and Lyngby BK were eliminated in penalty shoot-outs by 1. Division teams. So only HB Køge and AGF Aarhus did the job, while AC Horsens, Silkeborg and SønderjyskE are yet to play in round 2... In the case of AGF Aarhus the victory mainly came thanks to Søren Larsen who scored no less than 4 goals in the away match against Blokhus FC from the Danish 1. Division.

2011/12 Danish Cup, third round draw :

FC Vestsjælland (1.Div) v FC København

Jægersborg BK (5th level) v FC Midtjylland
    .

Well, AaB just dropped out of the Danish Cup... In theory this could of course be good for AaB in the Danish Superliga, because they now have one less tournament to worry about... on the other hand, when AGF Aarhus suffered relegation, they were undefeated and on top of the Danish league table after the first 7 rounds when they surprisingly lost to Viborg FF (same as AaB this year) in the Danish Cup tournament... and then it went all down hill from there in the Superliga... the rest is history.

It was more or less business as usual, when FC København narrowly beat Lyngby 1-0 away by taking an early lead after a corner kick and then closing down the match in midfield, not leaving much space for a weak Lyngby team to do much damage. Perhaps a bit boring, but efficient and it is difficult to argue against the results FCK are getting this way at the moment, since the 22 points they have gained in the first 8 rounds is better than last season and in fact this has been their best start ever in the Superliga (along with the 2005/06 season). Since it is easy to see that FCK are far from as strong as last season, I guess it is just tactically well done, though FCK were struck by some misfortune in this match when their captain Mathias "Zanka" suffered a serious knee injury after a heading duel early in the match... a qualified guess is that he will be out for 3 to 6 month... "Zanka" was replaced by Icelandic international Ragnar Sigurdsson who then shortly after made the assist when César Sántin became match winner, scoring his 5th goal this season. In any case, FCK seemed in almost total control in the first 45 minutes, while Lyngby put up a better fight in the 2nd half, though also due to FCK playing rather poorly. So not a match to remember, but the FCK coach and players got what they came for, while this Lyngby team were not good enough to be a real threat.

Lineups and match stats from Football-Lineups.com

The match at Mascot Park between Silkeborg and OB Odense became an absolute horrible experience for an injury struck Silkeborg team, since not only did they once again lose a tight battle in the Superliga, but their two central midfielders Kasper Risgård and captain Martin Ørnskov are both going to miss the next match due to a red card and the yellow cards they also received in this match... and as written, they were already troubled by injuries, with centre back Simon Jakobsen, midfielder Martin Svensson and their key striker Jesper Bech all being injured.

The first 45 minutes of this match was rather poorly played, with too many physical battles in midfield, which totally ruined the flow of play, but though the young Danish youth international Rasmus Falk was the only player who managed to impress before half-time, it was Silkeborgs Estonian international Kaimar Saag who was highly efficient when they finally got their first real chance to score. So they took a 1-0 lead, well assisted by Faroese left winger Christian Holst, who perhaps has not been able to score as many goals this season as he usually do for Silkeborg, but he has made a few nice assists. Though as written, it was a tough physical battle and especially OB's Norwegian international Espen Ruud should praise himself lucky, not being sent off in the 33th minute after a terrible foul on Kasper Risgård..

The 2nd half became much more entertaining, since Silkeborg turned up the pressure from start, resulting in some very good attempts, especially the one by Kasper Risgård who excellently managed to get past the Odense defense and keeper, though his attempt was saved right on the goal-line by the French OB defender Bernard Mendy, which probably became a crucial save, since minutes later it was instead OB Odense scoring the equalizer after a corner kick and some ping-pong in the Silkeborg box. Unfortunate for a home team that was still keeping up the pressure and also were producing big opportunities, but it was OB Odense scoring the goals and in the end an otherwise well playing Kasper Risgård was sent off for making a last man foul on Hans Henrik Andreasen in the box. So a penalty to the visitors, that btw became Odense goal number 1,000 in the history of the Superliga, while Silkeborg were one man down and on a mission impossible the last 5 minutes.

It sure has... but the Danish League Association (Divisionsforeningen) seem to have spend the break wisely, signing the biggest TV-deal ever in the history of the Superliga

The Danish League Association (Divisionsforeningen) are not revealing the exact figure, but saying that the new TV-deal is bigger than the old one (which was a bit more than 1 Billion DKK or just around $200 million)... so we are talking about at least $200 million that is mainly to be shared between the 12 Superliga clubs, with some "small change" going to the Danish Cup tournament and likewise a little for the Danish 1. Division clubs, that are also shown on TV.

Unlike the rest of Scandinavia, the Danish FA got their own separate TV-deal that cover the Danish national teams, youth NT's and youth development in general. So they are not included in this deal.

AaB Aalborg lost their first important match this season to Viborg FF in the Danish Cup, but it was away from home and FC Nordsjælland had lost all their 3 away games so far, while AaB were undefeated in the Danish Superliga and had won all their home games. But it was the visitors who impressed and totally dominated the first 45 minutes and AaB were more than lucky to escape with a 0-0 result at half-time. So it was only a matter of time before FCN finally took the lead, though AaB were looking better in the second half, but it was still the visitors who were producing the better opportunities, so it was no surprise when FCN winger Tobias Mikkelsen made it 1-0. However, AaB have had luck on their side this season and so it was also the case when they managed to score the equalizer a bit by chance only 5 minutes later by an attempt that was deflected by FCN defender Michael Parkhurst, so that it took the FCN keeper by surprise... and from that point on, it was the home team looking better and better and dominating the match, but the opportunities were misused and just as it seemed like the two teams were going to settle for a draw, the experienced FCN captain Nicolai Stokholm saved the day for the visitors by securing the win in 3 minutes injury-time. It was an excellent goal and not really an undeserved win, considering how FCN had dominated most of this match and also produced most of the bigger opportunities, but still a bitter defeat for the home team that had looked better in the later stages of the second half and were only seconds from holding their opponents to a draw.

AGF Aarhus took a calculated risk by signing Søren Larsen this summer though he no doubt is a classy striker when he is in top shape, but he had not been playing much the past few years and was far from match fit. So the club took it slow and easy, trying to get him in shape, not taking any unnecessary risks that could spark another backlash and it took some time for him to get fit to be in the starting 11, but when he finally did, he scored no less than 4 away goals in a Danish Cup game against 1. Division side Blokhus. Still, Cup games are not the same as Superliga, so this match against FC Midtjylland would be his very first playing from start at top-flight level this season and a great success it was, despite some terrible weather conditions... a little rain do no harm, but we got very heavy rain that almost made it a water polo match and ruined the flow of play in much of the first half. So it was all a bit random and the two teams did not create that many real opportunities, except for the goal by Søren Larsen (well assisted by Søren Berg) and a deflected goal by FCM's Dutch striker Tim Janssen, who earlier in the match felt robbed in the 16th minute when his back heel attempt was saved on the goal-line by AGF's English left back Adam Eckersley, or so it seemed at first, because a closer look made it seem more like the ball actually had crossed the line. In any case a 1-1 result at half-time did not seem unfair.

However, AGF striker Peter Graulund and play maker Martin Jørgensen both got injured before the break, so there was reason for the AGF coach to be worried when the visitors took the lead early in the second half due to an owngoal by AGF's Norwegian centre backAtle Roar Håland. Fortunately Håland rectified his mistake a minute or so later, making the assist when Søren Larsen scored his second goal and Larsen completed his hat-trick only 5 minutes later, when FCM were trying to push forward, but got caught by a quick run down the left flank by Stephan Petersen... and FCM did not seem to have learned their lesson since 4 minutes later they were finished off by an absolutely brilliant shot by AGF winger and Superliga topscorer Søren Berg who simply is on fire at the moment and has never looked better despite the fact that he has turned 35. But then again, he is a late bloomer, turning professional at the age of 24... In any case a deserved win for AGF in a match that despite the poor weather conditions turned highly exciting and entertaining in the second half.

Brøndby have not impressed at home so far this season, but now was their big chance at home against a weak looking HB Køge team and with Danish international Dennis Rommedahl getting his debut.... and a good debut it was for Rommedahl who made two assists and also saw an attempt hit the woodwork in the second half. But it was Mikkel Thygesen and Michael Krohn-Dehli securing the win for the home team, also showing that Brøndby have to rely much on their strong looking midfield and not so much on their less experienced strikers. The visitors did put up a fairly good fight in most of the first half, but then the Brøndby midfield took charge and the usual HB Køge mistakes made it an easy task for the home team, as you can also see in the extensive highlights below. So an easy win for Brøndby, but also an expected win.

SønderjyskE were seriously troubled by injuries before this match since both their two key strikers Kenneth Fabricius and Quincy Antipas were both injured, so when the visitor took an early lead it seemed to be an uphill battle for a home team that is better at defending a result rather that having to attack and dominate possession. But to be honest SønderjyskE did try their best and it became a fairly entertaining match, especially since Horsens were going for all 3 points and their Brazilian striker Gilberto Macena was sharp and on target, making his first hat-trick in the Superliga. We also got lots of fight an drama when Horsens misused a penalty and the Icelandic SønderjyskE midfielder Eyjólfur Héðinsson went from hero to bad guy and was sent off in the second half for two stupid and clumsy fouls on Horsens defender Morten Rasmussen. Despite playing 10 against 11, SønderjyskE never gave up and also produced 3 good opportunities by defender Thomas Hansen at set pieces, but not surprisingly it was the visitors who had the better striker and were sharp and on target when it mattered.

If you want to know more about the financial situation of the Superliga, then the total Superliga turnover/revenue in 2010 was DKK 2,414 million. But as you can also see below, the financial crisis has been tough on the Superliga in 2010, though perhaps not quite as tough as it has been the case in most of the rest of Europe... and the new TV deal should give the Superliga a small boost.

The Danish Superliga revenues (including transfers) :

    http://www.idan.dk/Nyheder/a050fodboldoeko.aspx

So DKK 2,414 million, or just around €324 million (US$ 442 million) divided between 12 clubs = €27 million (or just around US$ 36.8 million) a team ...

The red line at the bottom is the Superliga profits/deficits...

    Hello!

I am an American that will be traveling in Copenhagen Oct 28 - thru Nov 6.

I will try to go to some matches while I am there. Can some of the experts on these boards clarify a few things for me?

Danish Superliga matches are primarily played on Sunday, right?

Oct 30 - I want to see Bronby at home vs AAB

November 3 - i want to see Copenhagen v Hannover (Europa League)

Are tickets generally hard to get?

I am having trouble through the usual online sources. Are scalpers (touts) a good way to go? or are they too expensive? or do they not usually do this at the matches?

Are there singing/standing supporter groups that have their own sections in the stadiums and would be willing to allow a yanks in there?

Any information, suggestions, or recommendations for tickets or pre/post match places to go would be greatly appreciated.

FC København have signed a contract for the rest of 2011 with Danish international Lars Jacobsen, because they do not want their regular starters to play too many games and to get stretched too thin in defense right now, when they are playing both Superliga, Europa League and Danish Cup games. Jacobsen was a free agent and is signed too late to be eligible for the Europa League, so he is going to play Superliga, while Johnny Thomsen is playing Europa League for FCK.

So Lars Jacobsen got his debut playing well in this intense top clash between two teams that are not quite the same as last season, with FC København looking much more cautious and an AaB team that was close to relegation, but has done surprisingly well so far this season. So both teams took a rather cautious approach, relying much on set pieces as they have done all season, with FCK dominating from start but not having much luck creating all that much actual danger, while AaB got their few real chances as the first half progressed, with especially a good attempt by the young AaB striker Nicklas Helenius striking the FCK woodwork. But in all honesty the defending by the two teams was better than the last ball and finishing, which was not all too impressive in this match. So we seemed to be heading for a 0-0 result until the match took a turn to the better in the last 20 minutes, when FCK really used their physical advantage to keep up a pressure that the AaB defense was not able to withstand. So it was not surprisingly the many FCK set pieces that finally broke down the visitors, when they got tired at the end of this match and when the goal finally came through a forceful header by the Icelandic centre back Ragnar Sigurdsson, it was all over for AaB... It was btw the 70th goal in the Superliga by an Icelandic player and with 25 points and a goal difference of +13 after the first 9 rounds, FCK now share the record of making the best Superliga start ever along with Brøndby, that did equally well in the 1996-97 season.

Unlike FC København, then OB odense do not seem to be able to play both Europa Cup games and Superliga at the same time, though they have done fairly well in their Champions League qualifiers and beat the Polish Champions 3-1 away in the Europa League group stage last week, they have on the other hand done rather poorly in the Superliga and made some unusual defensive mistakes, just like in this match where some of the Odense players seemed to have lost focus... and if you are not ready from start, you lose your games in the Superliga no matter who you are up against. Perhaps it was the fact that they took an early 1-0 lead a bit by chance, that made some of the Odense players relax too much, but the rest of the first 45 minutes was dominated by the home team and it was only fair that they managed to equalize before half-time.

In the second half the match became highly entertaining when Horsens stepped up the pressure and it then exploded in a festival of big opportunities to both teams and no less than 5 goals within the last 30 minutes. Perhaps also because the Horsens captain and absolute key defensive midfielder Niels Lodberg got injured in the 57th minute. The Horsens defense was already stretched thin by injuries, so they were forced to attack and rely less on their defense, while the OB Odense players kept making some terrible personal mistakes. But fact of the matter is that especially Horsens Brazilian topscorer Gilberto Macena was on fire, making two goals and an assist, while their Senegalese striker Alioune Kébé also finally seem to be in top shape after a long-term knee injury that has kept him out for a year. He managed to score only one minute after he had replaced an injured Henrik Toft. Of course being 2 goals down Odense were also forced to make some tactical changes and sent in their "heavy cavalry" Djiby Fall and Morten Skoubo, which seemed to work perfectly against an injury struck Horsens defense, but just as Odense totally seemed to have turned the match around with a brilliant 3-3 equalizer by Norwegian international Espen Ruud, it was Horsens and Alioune Kébé securing a deserved win in the last minute.. As for Odense, then it was a good Superliga "debut" by Djiby Fall, but OB are getting further and further away from FC København and the top of the table, so perhaps they have to rethink how they are going to cope with playing both Superliga, Europa League and Danish Cup games, because it is clearly not working for them at the moment.

    HB Køge v AGF Aarhus, 0-2 (0-2)
    0-1 Peter Graulund (11)
    0-2 Peter Graulund (37)
    Attendance: 3,003

    Possession : 50% - 50%

Lineups and match stats from Football-Lineups.com

Both HB Køge and AGF Aarhus were troubled by injuries before this match and in the case of HB Køge it is almost their entire defense that has been replaced, just as it also was the case in their 0-5 loss against Brøndby last week, while AGF were missing their experienced play-maker and Superliga 'Player of the month' Martin Jørgensen who is still suffering from a head injury and concussion he obtained in the match against FC Midtjylland. So AGF were not looking as good in midfield as usual, but still strong enough to take an early lead through some bad HB køge defending and some good work by Stephan Petersen on the flank and a header by Peter Graulund who was the one scoring the goals for AGF in this match, while Søren Larsen provided an assist for the second goal... and efficiency and good strikers was the big difference between the two teams in a match where AGF were in no hurry after they took a 2-0 lead, while HB Køge took a much more cautious approach that usual and was trying to drag down the pace, knowing that AGF are strong in attack and quick at counter attacking.

So except for the two AGF goals we got a rather event less first 45 minutes and a 2nd half with AGF mainly trying to keep their lead, playing much like FC København have done so far this season, trying close down their opponents in midfield, while leaving much possession to their opponents, which worked pretty well for AGF except for a few glimpse, when Køge did manage to produce a few very big opportunities, especially thanks to winger/striker Adeola Runsewe who was able to impress for the home team. But AGF seemed in control for the most part, except that AGF captain Steffen Rasmussen was forced to make an excellent save in the 67th minute after a corner kick and then 9 minutes later when a HB Køge attempt hit the top bar and perhaps crossed the goal-line before bouncing back, so the AGF keeper easily could pick it up. It did cross the line to some extend, but perhaps not all the way. So it was a difficult call for the referee and linesman to make. But as written before in the Superliga thread, then HB Køge have played some fairly nice football in midfield, but have lacked the last bit of experience, defensive qualities, sharpness and luck when it really matters, which also was the case in this match. So yet another win for an AGF Aarhus team that has been looking better and better and now suddenly find themselves in top-4 in the Superliga table. But AGF did get troubled by some injuries in the second half of this match. Especially the injury to Atle Roar Håland could be a problem, with also Mark Howard not being fully fit due to injury at the moment. AGF also need Martin Jørgensen to recover from his concussion as soon as possible, considering that Hjalte Nørregaard is still not match fit after his long-term injury.

Brøndby managed to trash HB Køge last week and also looked fairly good in the first 45 minutes of this away match against FCN, with especially Dennis Rommedahl doing well for the visitors as the highlight below also imply, but they did not manage to score and when FC Nordsjælland took an early lead in the first minutes of the second half and even was able to add a second goal only 6 minutes later, the Brøndby team seemed quite unable to recover. SønderjyskE were terrible struck by injuries, lacking several key players in midfield and attack. In fact in lack of match fit strikers they were forced to use American midfielder Conor O'Brien as the lone striker, which was no success. So this was going to be an even tougher job than usual for SønderjyskE against an FCM team that almost never lose at home, but they still managed to do rather well in the first 45 minutes, where they managed to keep the pace down and look strong in defense. However, in the second half FCM turned up the pressure and pace so that the visitors were not able to keep and with the many injuries in mind, there was little the SønderjyskE coach could do from the bench, to turn the match around. So FCM continue to look very strong at home, where they have lost only once the last 11 months, but away from home they have not been all that impressive.

Silkeborg have actually played some nice attacking minded football this season, but they have been quite inefficient, which is why they now are in trouble at the bottom of the table. However, this match became a typical relegation battle, rather messy with two nervous looking teams that could not afford to lose. So it was neither well played or very entertaining, but Silkeborg got the win and 3 points despite playing poorly, while Lyngby now are in even deeper trouble when they are not good enough to get anything out of a home match like this. The big hero for Silkeborg was of course Faroese left winger Christian Holst, while Bajram Fetai was the one looking dangerous for the home team, but his best effort unfortunately struck the woodwork, so no goals to a Lyngby team that so far have had their worst start to a Superliga season ever.

Superliga games are played on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays ... as you can also see by looking at the attendance figures, tickets are generally not hard to get... as for how the fan groups react to foreigners, you will have to ask some of the local supporters, but I cant really see any problems there either.

OB Odense now only have the Superliga and Europa League to worry about after losing in the Danish Cup to FC Fredericia... and highly deserved it was, since OB hardly managed to create a decent opportunity in this match, while Fredericia with a bit of luck could have secured a bigger win. So OB Odense is the 3rd Superliga team that has been eliminated, with AaB Aalborg and Lyngby BK leaving the tournament in penalty shoot-outs against 1. Division teams in Round 2 of the Danish Cup.

Lyngby stripped of 3 points by Danish FA

As you may remember, then Lyngby was hit by allegations of secret illegal contracts this summer, involving black money and other attempts of tax evasion. It all surfaced when Randers signed Lasse Rise from Lyngby in the last winter transfer window and also was trying to sign Lyngby topscorer Kim Aabech by making a secret deal with him without asking Lyngby for permission, as they should according to the rules. So there was a dispute between Randers and Lyngby. However, Aabech was also dealing with Randers behind the back of his agent and so by mistake Aabech sent all his Lyngby contract to Randers, also some apparently secret ones, that had not been confirmed or approved by the Danish FA, including a secret sell-on clause.

So Randers was suddenly trying to clear their name and "win" the dispute by making a case against Lyngby and Aabech, which lead to Aabech getting angry and tearing up the contract he had just signed with Randers. The Danish FA settled this dispute by handing out fines to both Lyngby, Aabech and also Randers, but when Randers then later suffered relegation, they were trying to make new allegations against Lyngby now also involving the rather strange contracts of Lasse Rise, clearly hoping that the Danish FA would punish Lyngby by throwing them out of the Superliga, so Randers in this way could stay up. However, the case Randers were trying make was dismissed on technicalities, but Lyngby were still being investigated by the FA and have now finally received their punishment, which is a 3 points deduction this season + a €10k fine.

However the case is not quite closed, since there are also problems regarding the contracts of Rune Pedersen, Jakob Bresemann and the now former Lyngby players Marc Møller, Nicolai Melchiorsen and Morten Petersen. Lyngby on the other hand feel that they have been treated unfairly and will appeal the decision.

Brøndby IF have praised themselves for having the strongest looking midfield in the Superliga this season and perhaps they do, considering that they got NT quality players like Dennis Rommedahl, Mikkel Thygesen and Michael Krohn-Dehli, not to forget U21 NT midfield engine Mike Jensen and newly signed Oluwafemi Ajilore. They were also playing the better football and dominating much of this match against FC København, creating plenty of big opportunities to secure the win. But you do not beat a real top team like FCK by only having good midfielders and Brøndby have no classy looking strikers, a rather inexperienced goalkeeper and they have also been rather poorly organized tactically/defensively, which has been their main problem all season.

The first part of this first 'New Firm' clash of the season was rather even, with both teams trying to push forward as they usually do, hoping to take an early lead. But then Brøndby slowly but surely took charge in midfield and especially Mikkel Thygesen was forcing FCK's Swedish NT keeper Johan Wiland to show his worth, though he did make that one mistake that became costly, not being able to get hold on the ball after a corner kick, which was promptly punished by a well playing Thygesen. Brøndby kept dominating and pushing forward in the second half, but the woodwork and some absolute world-class goalkeeping by Johan Wiland was keeping Brøndby from extending their lead. Instead it was not surprisingly FCK showing that they got classy strikers who are efficient and cynical when it really matters in the end. So yet another slim victory for FCK this season, while Brøndby once again was playing the better football and creating the bigger opportunities, but lacked the last bit of focus and quality in defense and when they were to finish their attacks.... or in other words, Brøndby need a classy looking striker and to get better organized in defense. It is hardly by chance that the only team they so far have managed to beat at home in Brøndby this season, is HB Køge.

Lineups and match stats from Football-Lineups.com

AGF striker Søren Larsen is still not quite at 100% and he was totally worn out after the tough mid-week Cup match that went to a penalty shoot-out, following a scoreless 30-minutes extra time. So the AGF coach knew that some of his players were going to be tired and that he could hardly rely on Larsen playing the full 90 minutes. So considering this and the best way to break down the opponent, it mainly became a tactical triumph when AGF won the top clash against FC Nordsjælland, because AGF were deliberately leaving most possession to the visitors, especially after they took the lead through a controversial goal by Peter Graulund, well assisted by the excellent playing Norwegian centre back Atle Roar Håland who became a key player in this tactical fight, where FCN simply were too slow paced and could not find any holes in a rock solid AGF defense, except for a few good opportunities at the very start of the match due to some good crosses by Andreas Granskov and the highly attacking minded and well playing FCN right back Michael Parkhurst. But when AGF took the lead, they simply did not leave the visitors any room at all in the rest of the match, while AGF and especially Graulund and Håland on the other hand looked dangerous when they got the chance, though the goal by Graulund should have been disallowed, because he was using his hand to control the ball.

FCN was also struck by misfortune shortly before half-time, when their keeper Jesper Hansen got injured and was rushed to the nearest hospital, when he was unable to feel his fingers on the right hand after he suffered a blow to the back of his head while preventing Søren Larsen from scoring. But the young FCN reserve keeper David Jensen did a very good job in his Superliga debut. But it was AGF producing the big opportunities in this match and in the second half a good header by Håland was ruled offside, which he clearly wasn't. So in the end it was a highly deserved victory for the home team and as written a tactical triumph leading to AGFs 4th win in a row, which has only happened to AGF once before in the past 20-year history of the Superliga, back in 1995 when AGF were one of the top teams in the league. So perhaps we are finally looking at brighter times to come for AGF. The next few games against FCK and OB Odense surely will tell how good and solid this AGF team really is. But the usual AGF weakness of not being able to hold on to a lead and giving away stupid goals much too easily, seem to have vanished for now.

The loss to Fredericia in the Danish Cup did not seem be enough of a wake-up call or do OB Odense any good in their match against FC Midtjylland. Some of the OB Odense players clearly have trouble keeping focused on playing both Superliga and Europa Cup. Perhaps it's the 3 league Silver medals in a row and the fact that they don't seem to be able to challenge FCK this season either, that make some of the players more focused on their Europa Cup games, because there is surely something wrong with their focus and attitude in the Superliga at the moment. You could always argue that OB Odense were missing 3 experienced defenders like Bernard Mendy, Espen Ruud and Chris Sørensen in this match. But fact of the matter still is, that it only took FCM 45 minutes to dismantle this Odense team and FCM are usually not really that good away from home, but they were aggressive, pushing forward from start and punishing a weak and slow playing Odense team, through some quick counter attacking and two goals at set pieces. Of course it did not make things better, that OB were also forced to replace Anders Møller Christensen at half-time. because it could have gone much worse for the home team in the second half, if not for some good goalkeeping. FCM then hit the breaks, but that did not make Odense look much better, at least not before their coach finally replaced a poorly playing Peter Utaka with Djiby Fall, who finally gave the Odense fans something to cheer about. But it was all a little too late. As for FCM, then they should be praised for tactically doing all the right things, while also playing some good football.

In Aalborg, Lyngby took a highly surprising 2-1 win, especially considering the pressure and all the problems the club and player are facing at the moment outside the pitch, being stripped of 3 points by the Danish FA, while still being further investigated due to problems with secret illegal contracts, perhaps involving black money and other attempts of tax evasion. Not the kind of pressure the players need while also fighting at the bottom of the table, but perhaps it was the threat of actually losing 3 points that made the players stand closer together in this match and really put up a fight for every ball, while AaB actually did much as expected, but lacked the last bit of sharpness and also showed their usual weakness of slowing down and not being that good at getting results when they are dominating possession wise, which they clearly did in this match.

AaB were trying to push forward and also creating some good opportunities, but Lyngby were defending well, had the last bit of luck and also have good quick counter attacking players like especially Emil Larsen who was able to punish AaB in the first half, while also their key creative player and topscorer from last season Kim Aabech (who also has been investigated by the Danish FA), especially showed up in the second half and became match winner. At least for the moment, while their appeal is being reviewed, they get to keep the 3 points they officially have been stripped off by the Danish FA and should they manage to beat Brøndby in their next match, they are sure to be on the right side of the relegation line, at least for a while while the Superliga is on NT break and their case is being further investigated... As you can also so easily can see at the very end of the AaB v Lyngby highlights below, this match was for so many reasons an emotional roller-coaster for the Lyngby coach and their fairly new director Birgit Aaby, who btw is the first woman director ever in the Superliga. As for AaB, then the last bit of luck and efficiency they had in the first 7 rounds before the loss to Viborg in the Danish Cup now seemed to have vanished and they are right back, doing much like they did last season, when all was going wrong. From a tactical point of view, it is worth noticing how poorly AaB have been defending at set pieces, especially allowing too many headers, which they also could get badly punished for in the games to come, if they do not manage to correct this somehow.

As Ylou mentioned and predicted earlier Ceres, Aab would favourably risk falling somewhat in the league. We are seeing this right now. I hope they won´t witness the same kind of scenario as last year when they really struggled to stay in the league in the end.....

Thanks for the fantastic, high class reporting from Scandinavias best league!:)

AC Horsens striker Gilberto Macena has officially been selected as 'Player of the month' by the Danish League Association (Divisionsforeningen)... AGF Aarhus topscorer Peter Graulund came in second, while FCK striker Dame N'Doye came in 3rd : http://www.superliga.dk/superligaen/maanedens-spiller.html

The superliga 'Goal of the Month' was not surprisingly score by AGF Aarhus winger Søren Berg, who also won the title last month :

Not surprisingly, the top clash between FCK and AGF in Parken stadium became highly tactical, with both teams looking strong in defense and not leaving any room for their opponents in midfield, so nothing much happened in the first 45 tight, intense but rather boring minutes, except for two attempts by Christian Bolaños that was blocked by the AGF defense, while AGF looked toothless, perhaps also because Peter Graulund had been sick this week and was not playing from start. The second half started much like the first, with both teams having great trouble creating real dangerous opportunities, that is until the otherwise well playing AGF centre back Anders Kure made a big personal mistake, clearing a ball right to a FCK player right outside the box, which was promptly punished by a good cross right to Dame N'Doye who could hardly miss the target with his close range header.

So 1-0 to the home team and a mission impossible for AGF it seemed, considering how much trouble they had with their last ball and the strong looking FCK defense in this match. At first is also seemed like FCK took full control after they took the lead, but AGF did manage to push forward and create some danger at set pieces the last 7 minutes, after the AGF coach replaced right back Arthur Sorin with an attacking midfielder, while also using centre back Anders Kure as an extra forward, which paid off in the very last minute, when it was FCK and Claudemirs turn to make a stupid defensive mistake, quite clearly using hands in the box, trying to stop a header by Kure. So a last minute penalty to AGF that was easily converted by Martin Jørgensen and a great 1-1 away result for a more and more tactically clever playing AGF team. It seems that AGF now finally got the kind of "last minute luck" that usually follow when you are a real top team in the league. As for FCK then they are still undefeated in the Superliga and it was obviously important for them to show that they could look highly solid in defense throughout this match, considering their poor second half performance in the Europa League away match in Belgium. So it was perhaps no surprise that it was their Icelandic centre back Ragnar Sigurðsson who was picked as man-of-the-match.

An all together poor and event-less match, with only a few good attempts from both teams. so perhaps it was fitting that it was to be Jonas Bor(r)ing who scored the winning goal for the home team by a header, though a 0-0 draw would have been a more likely result of a match like this. Perhaps it is the long NT break that made most of the games in this round 11 more tactical and event-less than usual, since non of the teams would like to lose a game with no Superliga games this coming weekend to "revenge" a defeat. So most teams were trying to play it safe.

OB Odense have had a terrible run in the Superliga, losing three of their last four games, not to forget that they also were eliminated in the Danish Cup... and they continued to look vulnerable in defense at home against a well playing HB Køge team that really were trying their best to get a good result in Odense, not only taking a 1-0 lead but also producing very good opportunities throughout this match. Unfortunately for the visitors they are not very efficient and also make the kind of defensive mistakes that get punished at this level. As for OB Odense, then it is obvious that there are some problems in this squad, which the highlights below also imply, as you can see some of the Odense players arguing and almost getting into a fight during this match.... of lately Peter Utaka has openly been blamed by the fans and some team-mates for not working hard enough in the games, but though he disagree, it seems that he now is in fact working a bit harder for the team and also scoring important goals. Another player who has been partly blamed for their poor results is their German keeper Stefan Wessels, who no doubt has made some great saves, but unfortunately also make too many costly mistakes, which now also has made the Odense coach lose his patience, so Wessels got benched and OB were fielding reserve keeper Mads Toppel in this match.... and Toppel had plenty to do and actually did a very good job of it against HB Køge. In any case, this was an important win for Odense just before the NT break, but they will be up against a strong looking AGF Aarhus team in their next match where key midfielder Djemba-Djemba is going to serve a match ban, due to a yellow card he received in this match. So it could easily become an uphill battle for OB in Aarhus.

While some of the other games were rather eventless, then it became a rather high paced and entertaining match between Brøndby and Lyngby, that otherwise have not done too well this season, but it was difficult to see that this was two teams from the bottom of the table, since we were served some rather good football at times, perhaps also because Lyngby were in need of a win if they were to escape the relegation zone before the NT break, so they had no reason to hit the breaks and play too defensively. Brøndby on the other hand could not afford a loss if they were to avoided the humiliation of a long NT break below the relegation line. So they were pushing forward and dominating the match, though it was the strong Brøndby midfield both creating and finishing the attacks, but not being able to score, while Lyngby also had their opportunities. But no goals in the first 45 minutes, though Brøndby were quick to take the lead after the break thanks Dennis Rommedahl who seem to have become a real scoop for Brøndby. Though Lyngby were not able to be much of a threat in the second half, Brøndby were not able to take a more decisive lead. But unlike in most of the other games this season, the Brøndby defense was able to keep the visitors from scoring.

So a deserved win to the home team in a match that was Michael Krohn-Dehlis 100th in the Superliga for Brøndby. The goal by Rommedahl was btw his first in the Superliga since October 1996 where he scorede for Lyngby in a 3-2 win against Akademisk Boldklub. Despite getting all 3 points, Brøndby stay in 9th place, though now with an important 5-point gap to Lyngby and the relegation zone.

Silkeborg have dominated most of their games this season, playing some nice football, but they have had great trouble scoring goals, so in lack of efficient strikers they are now using former Bolton striker Henrik Pedersen on top, in hope that he can make a difference, though Pedersen has manily been playing as left back the past 6 years. But as you can see, it was a success in this match, since he scored the equalizer for a Silkeborg team that played aggressively from start as they usually do, though it was the visitors from Aalborg taking a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. However, AaB and Silkeborg have managed to settle for a draw in 4 of 5 their past Superliga games, so not surprisingly this was also exactly what happened in this match.

While Chris Rolfe made the assist for the goal by Jeppe Curth, his fellow American team-mate Marcus Tracy was released from his contract this past week, due to his unfortunate long-term injury problems the past few years, suffering from Jumpers Knee in both legs.

    Possession : 75% - 25%

Lineups and match stats from Football-Lineups.com

Despite the hosts having no less than 75% ball possession, nothing much happened in this match that is worth writing about, since SønderjyskE were looking strong i defense and they are mainly dangerous at set pieces and counter attacks, which they were not allowed much of in this match. So neither of the two teams were able to create much and it very much looked like it would be a goalless 0-0 draw until Mikkel Beckmann scored the winning goal in the 68th minute by a nice free kick just inside the upper right corner.... and perhaps not so surprisingly that it was to be a set piece that broke the deadlock. It was btw Mikkel Beckmanns 25th Superliga goal in his 100th Superliga match. FCN have now won their past 5 home games in a row in the Superliga which is a club record. SønderjyskE have on the other hand not been able to score any goals in their past 3 Superliga games in a row.

FCN are in a bit of goalkeeping trouble though, since their keeper Jesper Hansen got injured last week and in this match their young reserve keeper David Jensen twisted his knee and was replaced with their even younger 3rd keeper Jannich Storch. Since David Jensen is out for at least 6 weeks, FCN are hoping for a speedy recovery for Jesper Hansen, who was rushed to hospital after he suffered a concussion and lost feeling in all his fingers on the right hand, during the match in Aarhus last week.

Horsens were not playing tactical or defensively, but taking their chances at home against FCK, which could have become costly within the first 9th minute of this highly entertaining match, since a goal by FCK striker César Santín was ruled offside as you also can see in the highlights below. But FCK were not quite as efficient as usual, so instead it was Horsens taking the lead in the 38th minute through an excellent shot by right winger Jeppe Mehl, who unfortunately did not get to show much else, because Horsens was almost only attacking through their left flank or their tireless midfield engine Martin Retov who on the other hand played an excellent match. As I have written before, FCK do not look as strong as last season but they have been very cynical and efficient when they manage to take the lead in a match and they do not fall a goal behind that often, but when they do, they have not been able to turn it around, because they then lose control defensively and make too many mistakes when they are forced to push forward, which also happened in the second half of this match in Horsens. So the first FCK loss in the Superliga this season, while Horsens should be praised for a very good performance and it was btw Superliga topscorer Gilberto Macenas 50th Superliga goal for the home team.

With the away loss this week to Horsens and only one point at home against AGF Aarhus before the NT break, FCK are now suddenly only 5 points ahead of FC Midtjylland at the very top of the league table, so perhaps the fight for the Danish championship is now going to become a bit more interesting.

Lineups and match stats from Football-Lineups.com

All but two of the 18 AGF goals this season has been scored by only 3 players, Graulund, Berg and Søren Larsen, so this has been a bit of a weakness in this AGF team, that the club management are aware of and need to address when the winter transfer window is open... and since Graulund has been missing in the lineup the past two games against FCK and OB Odense, then AGF have seemed a bit toothless, so it is perhaps not that big a surprise that the AGF coach has been taking a more cautious approach tactically, especially since FCK and Odense got the two strongest attacks in the league. OB Odense on the other hand got the second poorest defense behind HB Køge and they also had huge problems in central midfield for this match in Aarhus, with Djemba-Djemba serving a one-match ban, while Traoré was too sick to play.

So Odense was also taking a more cautious approach than usual, trying to do much better defensively and mainly play some long ball to their two very strong forwards Peter Utaka and Djiby Fall in hope of a lucky punch goal and getting away with a narrow win. So it became a highly tactical and physical intense fight in Aarhus, with AGF perhaps looking better in midfield, but fielding only one genuine striker and not being able to do all that much damage in attack, while OB had less possession but the sharper looking strikers. So in the end there was not much to say about the final result, in a match where both teams mainly seemed happy about keeping the opponent from scoring. Of course it did not make AGF less cautious that their strong U21 NT midfielder Kasper Povlsen got injured in the first half and now is out the next 6 weeks. Fortunately for AGF, the former FCK captain Hjalte Nørregaard is now finally ready to play after his long-term injury, so he got his AGF debut replacing Povlsen in central midfield, doing quite well, considering that he of course is a bit rusty, only having played a few reserve league games so far.

FC Midtjylland had the exact right game-plan for this match against Brøndby, leaving the ball to the strong looking Brøndby midfield and then relying on fast breaks, knowing that Brøndby do not have the strikers to do much real damage... and it was especially Jonas Borring on the flank and the two Nigerians Sylvester Igboun and Rilwan Hassan causing trouble for the shaky looking Brøndby defense, while Brøndby got surprisingly little out of their otherwise strong midfield and NT wingers Rommedahl and Krohn-Dehli in this match. Though Brøndby did have good reason to be unhappy about the game-winning penalty, as you can also see in the highlights below, since Rilwan Hassan was clearly making a dive. Angered by the referee, some of the Brøndby players lost their calm, so much that Krohn-Dehli shortly after was sent off.....

I'm sure the Brøndby coach and players believe that they have been struck by much misfortune and poor refereeing so far this season, but the truth of the matter is, that they have been no better than their results... Sure, they could have managed to get a 0-0 result in this match, if not for a mistake by the referee, but considering how little they managed to create and the many good opportunities wasted by the home team, you can hardly argue against the result.

The match between FCN and AaB became a bit of a mess, with both teams having trouble creating all that many good opportunities, but the scouts from around 15 foreign clubs represented at this match (to name a few : Udinese, Hoffenheim, West Bromwich, Lille OSC, Club Brügge, Heerenveen) no doubt were happy about what they had seen and got what they came for, since the main attraction was FCN centre back Andreas Bjelland who has impressed in the Superliga as well as for the Danish NT of lately. In fact the whole FCN defense has looked unusually strong this season, with Bjelland and Danish U21 international Jores Okore looking highly impressive in central defense, while left back Patrick Mtiliga seem to be a real scoop and the American Michael Parkhurst finally seem to have settled well in right back position. So a highly solid looking defense, with some good passing skills and good attacking minded full backs, no doubt being the main reason for the FCN success in the Superliga this season. However, the question is how long FCN will be able to keep their two highly talented centre backs.

As for this match, there is nothing much to say about the final result which was quite deserved, since the visitors from Aalborg showed too little to be a real threat to a strong FCN defense and the AaB defense were missing their key centre back Kjetil Wæhler, which became costly in a match like this. FCN on the other hand were in no hurry and happy to defend their 1-0 lead in the second half, which they had no big problems doing.

It's a bit sad watching HB Køge and Lyngby play in the Superliga this season, because HB Køge actually play some nice football at times and quite clearly got some highly talented young attacking players, but are just terrible in defense, while the Lyngby players should be more experienced, but seem to lack some self confidence. No doubt due to the ongoing investigation by the Danish FA, because of their problems with secret illegal contracts, but also because of some terrible defending, because their defense is too slow and does not fit their style of play at all. Or in other words, Lyngby do have some very good creative attacking minded midfielders and especially a quick talented winger like Emil Larsen who is also able to score some very nice goals, but their defense is so slow and poor at moving the ball upfield, that they are either standing too low in defense, leaving big holes between midfield and defense, when the midfield is trying to keep a high pressure, or the defense is being punished for their lack of speed, when they actually do try to support their midfielders, but then get hit by fast breaks. In this match between Lyngby and Silkeborg we saw two teams that looked fairly good in midfield, but were terrible at defending and showed exactly why they are fighting to stay clear of the relegation line. As I was also writing before the NT break, then Silkeborg have been forced to use the old former Bolton striker Henrik Pedersen on top, in lack of efficient strikers and this has been a success the past few games, despite the fact that Pedersen has mainly been playing as left back the past 6 years.

The Lyngby appeal has btw now finally been reviewed by the Danish FA and Lyngby a bit surprisingly get too keep the 3 points they were stripped off.

AGF were very badly struck by injuries for this away match in Lyngby. In fact all the natural AGF centre backs were injured, so in lack of other options, the AGF coach chose to use Martin Jørgensen, who actually did a good job, but then of course was greatly missed in central midfield, where his usual partner Kasper Povlsen also was missing. To make matters worse, AGF were also missing Stephan Petersen on the left flank and with 2nd pick also being injured and 3rd pick Casper Sloth being used in central midfield, the AGF coach was forced make yet another change in defense and midfield, by moving left back Adam Eckersley to left wing position...

So with only one of the defenders (Sorin) and one of the midfielders (Berg) in their usual positions in compare with last weeks starting 11 against OB Odense, it was a terrible decimated AGF team and this unfortunately showed, though it still became a close and fairly entertaining match, with AGF producing the bigger opportunities and being closer to a win than Lyngby, but just lacking the last bit of quality, especially in the first 60 minutes, before the slightly injured Stephan Petersen and Graulund both were able to enter the pitch and and made the AGF attack look stronger, perhaps also because Søren Larsen was not feeling well and probably should not have played from start either.

On the positive side for the visitors, then AGF are now undefeated in their past 9 games in a row and the defense seemed fairly solid except for the mistake or misunderstanding at the Lyngby goal.... The former FCK captain Hjalte Nørregaard did a great job in central midfield, also getting close to scoring his first goal for AGF, though his close range attempt was saved by the well playing Lyngby keeper Rune Pedersen.... and then of course Adam Eckersley did his job well on the left flank, even scoring a brilliant free kick goal as you can also see in the highlights below.

So it was not as bad for AGF as it perhaps looked on paper. But still a disappointing result, considering how weak this Lyngby team are looking at the moment and that Lyngby were giving away too much in defense as usual, though they were still playing a fairly good first 45 minutes.... The next match for AGF is only a few days from now in the Danish Cup against VB Kolding (formerly known as Vejle BK), but according to the AGF coach it seems like captain in defense Atle Roar Håland, Stephan Petersen and Graulund will be ready for this match, so not all that many players are going to play out of their usual positions.

If you were afraid that the Superliga had become too predictable at the top of the table, then this round turned everything upside down. FC Nordsjælland not only beat FCK in Parken, they were no less than excellent in this match, dominating FCK in all aspect of the game, especially in the first 45 minutes where they were at least a level better than their opponents. The visitors showed some really nice short-passing and the Danish champions were totally outplayed and run over, hardly being able to get hold on the ball against the excellent playing visitors. In fact it was no less than 63% possession to the visitors in the first half, where the home team lost the ball almost instantly, the few times they actually managed to get hold on it. It should be said that FCK were missing an injured Claudemir and Sölvi Ottesen was serving a match ban, players who were greatly missed, but is can not be used as an excuse for how easily FCK were outplayed in this match. It is also the first time in more than 5 years that FCK have suffered two straight losses in the Superliga.

FC Nordsjælland took a deserved lead after an attempt by Andreas Laudrup had struck the top bar and Søren Christensen managed to score in the following attack assisted by young Laudrup, while the second goal was just brilliant, with Søren Christensen, Mikkel Beckmann and Tobias Mikkelsen totally outplaying the FCK defense. The 2-0 result at half-time was totally deserved, but the match turned more even after the break, when FCN were happy to hold their lead, which they did rather easily. It was only Dame N'Doye being a real threat to the visitors a few times throughout this match, also scoring a consolation goal for the home team.

FCN have always been a very good short-passing team, but have had to rely on too many young inexperienced players and a rather shaky defense, but this season the defense has been quite outstanding, especially thanks to Andreas Bjelland who really has impressed, but also the Danish U21 international Jores Okore has done remarkably well, while Michael Parkhurst really has impressed in right back position. The signing of left back Patrick Mtiliga was just the last missing piece of the puzzle. But now FC Nordsjælland got the strongest defense in the league, all good attacking minded defenders, who are good at moving the ball forward, especially Bjelland, who also impressed in this match and made it to the Superliga 'team of the week' for the 3rd week in a row. I will be highly surprised, if he is not sold in the winter break, just as Parkhurst now got a golden opportunity to find himself a bigger club abroad, when his contract expire in the winter. Of course, this would not be good for FCN, it they are to stay at the top of the table, but unlike much bigger clubs like FCK, Brøndby and OB Odense, FCN are not able to afford to keep their key players and they have to sell a classy player like Bjelland, if they get a fairly good offer.

SønderjyskE are usually a very defensively strong team-work, especially at home and it also looked like business as usual until Horsens took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, because from that point on the SønderjyskE defense completely collapsed, which is highly unusual, but perhaps they had a collective off-day. AC Horsens on the other hand had it all wrapped up by scoring 4 goals within the first 40 minute. Horsens really have some good strikers this season, but the question is how long they are going to keep them, because they have said that they expect to sell their Superliga topscorer Gilberto Macena this winter and replace him with Ken Fagerberg, which in my opinion will be a huge blow and an end to their dreams of league medals this season. But so far so good for Horsens and SønderjyskE just need to praise their luck that HB Køge, Lyngby and Brøndby are doing even more poorly this season.

This week AC Horsens striker Alioune Kébé has unfortunately been forced to retire do to knee surgery that went terrible wrong.

AaB were troubled by injuries and both they and Odense have had a very poor run of lately, so it was a rather nervous start form both teams leading to a penalty when a well playing Chris Rolfe clearly was fouled inside the box. The American chose finish the job himself, but the 1-0 lead was short-lived, since it was then Aalborg and Kjetil Wæhlers turn to make a clumsy penalty shortly after. In fact both AaB and Odense were lucky to escape even more penalties in the first half, since AaB centre back Kjetil Wæhler also had his hand on the ball trying to prevent Peter Utaka from scoring and later it was OB midfielder Andreas Johansson seemed to make a foul on AaB left back Jakob Ahlmann trying to prevent him from getting a second attempt on target, after he had made a good run into the box.

It was the home team dominating most of the first 45 minutes, though OB also had their moments. But the entertainment value dropped a bit in the second half, since the Odense players got more physical as they grew more tired, probably also because of their tough midweek Europa league match against Twente, while AaB was struck by yet another blow when Jeppe Curth was injured in a heading duel with Tore Reginiussen and had to be replaced. in any case the match became more physical and though AaB seemed to have the upper hand they had trouble breaking down the Odense defense, while the Odense players seemed to tired to do much damage themselves. But just as it seemed that both teams would settle for a draw, Chris Rolfe earned his team the win with only 6 minutes left, when he received a pass from the left and took one step in side the box before then fired a good shot to the right of the keeper and secured all 3 points. So an excellent mach by the American, who as you can see, also made it to the 'Team of the week' and a good win for AaB.

Lineups and match stats from Football-Lineups.com

Brøndby have been a terrible disappointment this season and considering that their main quality is a strong looking midfield, there were more than enough reason to worry for this highly important away clash at the bottom of the league, since the key Brøndby wingers Rommedahl and Krohn-Dehli were injured and so was defensive midfielder Oluwafemi Ajilore, so coach Jensen was forced to use Mikkel Thygesen and Jan Kristiansen in central midfield, while using young Osama Akharraz on the flank. No doubt some good midfielders, but also a highly attacking minded and not a very well balanced midfield. Though it looked good for Brøndby at first, with Kristiansen, Akharraz and Thygesen all producing good opportunities for the visitors and Thygesen also making an assist when Brøndby took the lead. However, defensively Brøndby were in great trouble. Silkeborg looked very sharp at set pieces and though Brøndby were warned by a header by Dennis Flinta in the 22 minute, saved by the woodwork and Brøndby keeper, they could not prevent Flinta from scoring when he got a second chance in a heading duel with Thygesen in the last minute before half-time.

In the second half Silkeborg just looked that bit sharper in attack than the visitors and especially Henrik Pedersen came very close to score that 2nd goal several times, so it was not really much of a surprise when it finally happened with only 3 minutes left to play, though this time it was not a set piece, but just terrible defending by Brøndby, which has been their main problem most of the season, along with the lack of good strikers. So there is not much to say about the final result.... and this loss became the end of Brøndby coach Henrik Jensen who has not actually been fired, but is replaced former Brøndby player and HB Køge coach Aurelijus Skarbalius, who was suppose to join Brøndby as assistant coach in January, but has been signed straight away as temporary head coach until the winter break.

On the surface it only seem natural for Brøndby to fire (or in this case replace) head coach Henrik Jensen, considering that Brøndby got the 3rd biggest wage budget (behind FCK and OB Odense), but still have done this poorly in the league. However, if you dig a little deeper, some big question arises... Why did Brøndby hire Henrik Jensen in the first place ?. He has never produced good results as head coach at Superliga level in the past. He Suffered relegation with HB Køge before he got fired from his first job in 2003, then suffered relegation with AB the following season and got fired again. His very short spell as head coach at AC Horsens in 2009 also ended in relegation from the Superliga, before he got the job at Brøndby, which has also been down hill from there...

Terrible judgment by the board and management you could say, but it gets even stranger, since it has now been revealed that he was not much more than a "hand puppet" for the Brøndby board and the new director of football Ole Bjur, since Henrik Jensen was not allowed to chose his assistant coach or even the captain of the team. When Clarence Goodson to much surprise was handed the captaincy very shortly after he arrived at Brøndby, it was on direct order by the new director of football against the wish of coach Jensen and it was an incident that clearly made coach Jensen job more difficult, since Brøndby vice-captain Michael Krohn-Dehli took this very personal and got so angry not getting handed the captaincy that he more or less demanded to be sold straight away and actually has performed rather poorly for Brøndby ever since. Now if the board and managemet had any trust in coach Jensen in the first place, why did they not let him do the job he was hired to do ?... It is diffcult to be head coach in a big club like Brøndby and to become a success you need the trust and respect from your players, but how do you get that, when the players know that it is not their coach but the board and management who is really pulling the strings and chosing who is to be captain of the team ?.... Now Brøndby have hired a temporary solution who has a similar background and career as head coach, with no success at superliga level, so the question is if he is going to be just another "hand puppet" for an obviously incompetent Brøndby management ?... I fear so.

On a different note, though perhaps still related to the managerial problems at Brøndby, is seems that they perhaps are losing their young U21 NT winger Osama Akharraz to AGF Aarhus. He has been offered an extension of his contract, but is not at all happy that the Brøndby management are not willing to give him much of a pay raise (he is said to be getting around €39k or $53.5k a year right now). According to kanalsport.dk he had a heated argument with Brøndby Chairman Per Bjerregaard about his contract two days ago and yesterday he suddenly left training, with no word about where he was going.

More surprises in the Danish Cup, when the 3rd level (2. Division) club Næsby BK managed to eliminate Silkeborg from the Superliga and also AGF Aarhus went out after extra time in Vejle, which was a terrible blow for AGF, not so much because of the defeat, but because key striker Peter Graulund got seriously injured (Achilles tendon rupture). He has received surgery and is out for the rest of this season. :(

FC København were resting some of their regular starters, but had still no big problem eliminating Brøndby away. Now they face a much more difficult task in the Danish Cup quarter-finals against FC Nordsjælland.
