Now that (regardless of whether it's Lippi or some other foreign maestro type) would be a good idea. In fact, a great idea. The single biggest possible positive of a good big-name hire would be the bump in institutional knowledge over the long-haul, and one of the best ways to maximize that would be the taking of a good local soccer mind (one who's current job is to try to teach youth soccer coaches to be better soccer coaches) under his wing. The last foreigner who had the top spot was Bora, and Bora was a system coach who trained weak teams how to put up a scrap against strong teams and claw out an unlikely result. He made a career out of that all over the world. We made a national team out of that philosophy, but that philosophy I don't think was ever meant to last for 2 full decades.
I never thunk it would actually happen. I agree that it was necessary, but I do feel bad for him and wish that things could have turned out different. For his sake I hope he wasn't surprised. EDIT: and I'm REALLY eager to see how Michael Bradley is played... what changes may or may not be made in the line up and playing time.
Unless there's a tie to the US (like with Klinsmann) I think it's very, very unrealistic to think the US is gonna sign an international guy still young enough to coach a club. I'd love to Mark Hughes, for example, but he's not leaving Fulham. National team coaching is seen as semi-retirement for guys like Hughes and Benitez and they're too young for it.
No more Jonathan Bornstein, no more Sasha KLjestan, no more Michael Bradley, no more Chris Wondolowski........Meg Ryan says:OOOOOHHHHHHH! YESSSSSSSSSS!!!
Damn US Soccer: you just added another 0.0000001% to the US total Unemployment rate. I hope your happy.
Well... I suppose in his present state he does show slightly more emotion than Bradley, which might be good for team spirit.
+1 Insanity reigns! Nope. Wouldn't want a multiple Serie A winning, Champs league winning, WORLD CUPO WINNING coach. No way no how!
I think Maradona was a special case. He's such a beloved figure in Argentina, that he was hired even though he has been a walking disaster since his playing days.
Mark Hughes isn't leaving Fulham? So I guess he's gone and gotten plastic surgery and changed his name to Martin Jol then?
I'd be happy with Klinsmann, especially if he is given the keys to revamp the US development system, which I think was one of the sticking points in prior negotiations.
