You think this is good for marta? one of her goals only came because she pushed down a defender to score it. FIFA cheating for brazil like always.

What I would have given to see Engen on the field during this tournament.. :( Dont forget Engen also used to be a forward.

    Krieger - Rampone - Engen - Sauerbrunn

Perfect balance of pace and defensive prowess. No player is slow and all of them have great instincts.

Are we allowed to call in Engen for this game? ;)

Definitely. But I was trying to keep it simple for the (apparently) reading comprehension impaired.

Does anyone think Amy LeP will be replaced for Sunday's game? Or, what changes will Pia make, if any?

Why would she be replaced..?? giving away a penalty..?? happens all the time. The other deflection was just a fluke and in NO WAY should be blamed on her.

Engen was a very good forward at UNC for two years, scoring and assisting often. this would have been a very SOLID back line. Much better than what we currently have... This isn't a new revelation either. cryin' shame.

USA won their last two olympics on great defending...now we don't even have that (i mean we do, just not playing right now)

    We can only hope so.
Man, LePeilbet is bad. Just real bad out there against this type of competition.

maybe they can replace her for Becky sauerbrunn?

Ball just hit her. There was nothing she, or anyone else, could have done about that. Just one of those things that happen in soccer. You don't drop a player for stuff like that. Ever.

I''d have to agree. All these imaginary line up changes won't compensate for Marta's pace, and Christy's juggling skills all of a sudden become extraordinary when she plays next to Marta. They'll have to play smart and HEART it out as usual vs Brasil. The ONLY change I see which makes a difference is starting Morgan with A-Rod and Abby for the 90 min, give Brasil's suspect defense some pace, and FORCE Daiane to commit to A-rod or Morgan on an attack. If just A-rod, she'll pick it off every time, just playing too SMART. Brasil jumps up 1-0 in the 1st half, they will be so open for counters it won't be funny. And like i said, they don't have a marking defender on this roster outside of Rampone, and if you move her from central for that, then give Brasil game before the game starts. If Pia plays 2 up front, then they;ll have to win this thing on heart and Solo saves. that's about it.

the only odd thing i see which could happen is if chaney gets hot from 20 yrds out and beats brasil's keeper once or 2. Hope they put in extra practice framing shots. Where's the stat on that? USA has to be at the top for inability to frame shots 20 yrds in.

    Nice write up here:

    http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/news/_/columnist/carlisle_jeff/id/6745985/us-defeat-marta-co

As noted, don't like a 4-4-2 with Daiane who is the biggest difference in Brasil since the last WC and Olympics. She doesn't have to commit to anything but A-Rod coming front. Aline will mark Abby.

    Re: Quarterfinal 4: Winners Group D - Runners-up Group C | 10.07.11 [R]

... since the little group dance the Slovenes did last summer :p

In their defense, it's meant to be silly/cathartic, almost a sorority initiation ritual. It started as a locker-room joke, probably to dispel pre-match tensions and increase team bonding. Having all team members buy into it and play along is a daring/exhilarating demonstration of camaraderie.

They know it's cheesy and makes them look ridiculous, but they'd rather overcome their own shyness, than be the killjoy(s) who snort in derision and dump cold water on it. The wily veterans in the room could veto this kind of frivolity with one harsh word, and they probably do in locker rooms (and boardrooms, classrooms, family dens) all over the world. But it's also a sign of wisdom to realize which end of the spectrum your own team would thrive best in. MJ's Bulls would never do this (which gave Rodman a useful role as unsquelchable 1-man comic relief). Michigan's Fab 5 probably did this 24-7, and needed to, just to deflect the pressure. Shaq would start this, Kobe would squelch it -- another hint of their inevitable clash.

USA Soccer has videos of us doing much same in our training camps. Our veterans tolerate this in training, but not in the tunnel.

Sweden looks unsynchronized while dancing for the same reason everybody at the WWC sings their own anthems an octave too low: they're football players. Goading them to spend the collective effort to do anything else as a group is already a tremendous uplift (or deadlift). They'll be doing this dance in team reunions for the next 6 decades :D

She could have been in the wall where she was presumably supposed to be, instead of a yard or two away where she left a window for the ball to go through.

Bullshit. The USA had enough players in the wall.

Well, well. How big is this game now?

I think that Japan and France have played the best overall football of the tournament, and Sweden does have that win over the USA, and Japan over Germany, but the winner here has to be a big favorite to win it, don't they?

Pretty much. The winner of this match is most likely going to take it all.

I wouldn't say that. Every single team in the tournament so far has shown weakness enough, including these two (though USA more so than BRA, I think). Now that GER is out, I don't think there is a favorite anymore.

I like France's pace if Brasil gets past the USA. France will bring the numbers. Unfortunate, I think Pia will just go 2 up top instead of 3 with Morgan. But we shall see.

I agree w/ england66 here. A lot of teams station a player off the wall where LP was. The deflection og was incredibly unfortunate and made a bad day for her even worse. The real reason for the goal was Buehler's mistouch + foul combo.

I don't think LP should sit b/c of the deflection. However, I wouldn't play her as left back vs Brazil. She just has not been comfortable there any time I've seen her play left back. And she's got a big ol' target on her and if she's the left back, Brazil is going to run at her hard. Real hard.

I just don't see the point of someone standing there. She's neither marking someone nor between the shooter and the goal. But maybe I should look at defenses in similar situations before being so judgmental.
