If true, this is uber-cool. There are a lot of portugee in this area, and in fact there is an affiliate of Sporting Lisbon in Santa Clara (Santa Clara Sporting Club). I would imagine that this game would attract a fair number of people, and would be a lot of fun too. I hope it happens!

FWIW, some Portuguese newspapers are reporting this as well.

It will be even more fun if the Quakes take it somewhat seriously by putting out their normal starting 11.

Definitely. Otherwise we get this, "Oh, well it was just an exhibition, so it doesn't mean anything." Kicking a club from Portugal here in the Bay Area where there are so many avid Portuguese soccer fans would be an exquisite PR plus.

Never assume anything. Knowing our front office, the game will be played anywhere but Spartan, think some place cheap. As long as it isn't Cracktown(oakland) or Frisco (the toilet) it might be worth the drive. We aren't going to win the MLS Cup this year anyway so we might as well put our best 11 on the pitch to gain a little respect.

I just love early season optimism :)

I see through what you are doing. Reverse jinxism is at play here, right?

Yes, Beerking has been known as our reversing jinxist. Or is it our "jinxial reversist"? Or is it our "retrojinxer"? Oh, hell, something like that.

When Lazio showed up last year to play CA. There was zero promotion of this match within the Bay Area Italian American community. And when I asked why not, at the FO they said it was a last minute match and they weren't going to put any money into promoting it, enough CA fans would make it a profitable match. Here is yet one more opportunity to gain some new fans, will they blow it again?

If they won't promote this game, than we must.
Is there any Portuguese person on the boards?

I am not sure if there's any (non-soccer, general) message boards or sites in Portuguese in the Bay Area, or is Portuguese community here large enough.
But this is what I meant: cross-posting.

Hey, the 2001 and 2002 end-of-season parties were held at that sports club in Santa Clara, which is a Portuguese-related club. That club has sponsored soccer teams for umpteen years and is a mainstay in the Bay Area. That would be an ideal conduit.

OKAY...listen up...I'm probably the only Portuguese person who is a total Sporting Lisbon, AND Quakes fan, Im usually pretty quiet on theses boards, but Im here, reading up everyday. It is true that the quakes will be playing Sporting Lisbon on May 12th, 7:30 pm, at Spartan. I wanted to anounce this before, but i needed confirmation ( so i wouldnt look like an idiot) I know this is true because my father owns a print shop, and we were contracted by the promoter to print the flyers for the game. 10,000 flyers have been ordered and paid for. they gave us the design and the check today, BTW most of the work is complete......I sware on anything this is true!

FWIW: Sporting's currently sitting in 2nd place in the Portuguese Superliga, and is all but assured of a place in the 2004/2005 Champions League. If this match is marketed properly and actively in your neck of the woods you should get a good crowd. In New England that's almost guaranteed with the size of the Portuguese community in Southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island - wouldn't be surprised if we get 40,000-plus for that match.

Hmmm. Still nothing on the Quakes homepage about this match. I'm gonna call my source today and see if he knows about it.

    QUAKES vs SCP

This is what burns me about the Quakes advertising. A very BIG European club will be here in less than 1 month and they have done NOTHING to promote it. There is a very big Portuguese population here in the bay area and I'm sure almost none of them have heard of this. My friend is a huge Benfica supporter and follows Portuguese teams closely but hadn't heard of this. It seems as if you have to come to these boards to get any news of the Quakes which is totally ridiculous. What about the casual fan ?

Hello  ..... we heard about this on a message board referencing a Boston Globe article.....I think it's safe to say the proverbial ball has already been dropped.

I'll go down to Santa Clara later and check. See what the pulse is at Joao's.

The Portuguese community will show up in droves. They have in the past when Benfica played against the Blackhawks, and later when they played a friendly against a Mexican team in a double header with the Quakes. There wasn't much mainstream advertising in either case. The former was almost totally sold out, the latter had a pretty solid crowd, too.

They just announced the match. Why's everyone getting their panties in a wad about the advertising now? All they have to do is put up one ditto flyer at the Santa Clara Sporting clubhouse, and the word will spread. One flyer in Hollister. One flyer each at Santa Clara and Wilcox high schools. And i'm sure they'll do more than that when it's all said and done. Personally, I wouldn't mind them advertising to Quakes fans, too. Otherwise, this will be just like whenever we play Mexican teams -- a home game for the visitors. Which always sucks ass.

What concerns me is that this is less than a month away, and I haven't received an order form from the Quakes for any seats (typically for games like this, season ticket holders have the option of ordering their usual seats).

I think this is just more proof that Lalas is here for window dressing and there is no intention on keeping the Earthquakes in San Jose. I guess I'm just feeling especially glum after reading the article on Cybersoccernews regarding the upcoming game. The players themselves know they're on their last leg here (and I personally feel it's affecting their play), they are delaying buying houses, setting up stuff, the whole picture. I think they know Lalas and the higher ups are either not able or perhaps not willing, or whatever, to do what it takes to keep this team in San Jose.

Probably it isn't 100% confirmed yet. Remember they've been burned before, selling tickets to games that ended up not happening. (El Salvador last year, Persepolis a few years ago).

to clear some things up...the game is definately confirmed, I dont think a promoter would fork out the money he did to order the flyers we have been printing for the last two days...also about the whole Portuguese community thing...theres definately a buzz around the community. The word is beeing passed around quite a bit, and beleive me, when the word gets out in the Portuguese community here, half the Portuguese population of the world will know within 2 weeks!!
