DCU Acquires...wait for it...Dwayne De Rosario

this deal wasn't as sudden as it might initially seem

 

I was really surprised when i heard about this one.had to comment

LOL. i hope that it doesn't have to come to that but true, Ben wouldn't mind laying it down if he needs to.

with the way DCU has been able to keep the ball in the opponent's half throughout these games,a creative attacking midfielder wouldn't hurt. Seems like the team is gelling together and unfortunately Dax was never going to be that creative mid we thought he would be. IMO better to plan into the next couple seasons than in the next 6-8 years

 

I peaked over to the Red Bulls BS page and they are all mostly seriously bummed about this trade. Who wouldnt if they were getting Dax.

 

This team clearly was lacking attacking vision from central midfield (especially with the loss of Boskovic - yet he had only started to bear fruit before he got hurt) and the addition of DeRo is a HUGE move for this squad and will go a long way towards helping the offense become that much more effective.

Giving up Dax was worth the price because Dax (as much of a fan of his as I am) this team is still plenty young enough that losing Dax won't be too much of a miss.

Dax was a good guy in a lot of ways, I feel bad for him. But, had he produced some goals and assists by now, this trade wouldn't have been necessary.

As it stands now, United is essentially replacing the Boskovic contract with DeRo. No chance Boskovic is back (not that there was one) next season. This may also help keep Charlie Davies around next season.


This team was desperate for attacking help thru the middle and you really couldn't get much better than DeRo. Obviously his best years are in the rear view mirror, but if United can get solid stats out of him for the remainder of this season and up to the next two seasons, it was worth it to pull the trigger on this move..

 

Let just settle this right now, Dax is not a AM. He is an attack minded DM. He was out of position in the AM role here.

I have never been a fan of De Ro. Sorry. Add to that the 33 year old "sell by date" on the side of his carton and I leery.

Sorry end of the day I cannot get excited about this trade.

Simms is a one trick pony. If we're destined to ride that horse you might as well let him stick to what he's good at.

The McCarty / Simms combo was a case study in making two players do what neither of them was comfortable/capable of.

 

Great trade.

Even if we don't seriously contend in the next couple years, playing along side DeRo will immediately speed up the development of our young players, not to mention putting butts in the seats.

I'm excited.

 

Multiple options for DCU now. Benny could choose to use DeRo as an A-Mid, though I'd think he'd be better as a withdrawn forward. Something like this maybe

I still think the team is one experienced CB away from a serious playoff contender but these two trades look great on paper, IMO.

Uhhh... wow. As others have said, this is going to be monumentally awesome or a colossal failure. This and the McDonald trade show me that the FO/Olsen are not messing around. They want the playoffs this year.

I like both trades. Dax lacked the physical presence to play the Simms role and lacked the touch and vision to be an attacking presence. As a number of folks noted, he really was the "perfect" holding mid in a 3-5-2, a formation that Ben does not want to play. Both DeRo and Dax are "damaged goods," in that DeRo sulked out of Toronto and was given up on by NYRB quickly (of course remember their long-term history of player development/acquisitions) and Dax was deemed expendable by a Cup finalist. In the end, DeRo fills a need DCU has in a way that Dax never would. I think Ben finally decided that King = McCarty and it was time to use Dax's trade value to good use. We'll see the long-term wisdom of that idea play out this season and next. I'm excited to see this Saturday's game. DeRo and Davies could be lethal.

 

MaCarty was a failure because he is not an AM and does not have the skill set to play it.


I am disliking this trade by the minute. De Ro is too old and too much of an Ego/Head case for me.


At the end of the day I don't think this trade makes United better. IMHO

 

We still have plenty of cap space, especially if we tag DeRo as a DP (it would save $100K off the cap). He would essentially take over McCarty and Fred's salaries, but, to me, that's totally worth it for a player that can still lead the offense.

We would still have enough to go out and get at least one other signficant player, i.e. someone over $250K.

Here's hoping he doesn't start that check writing stuff, that was weird. Maybe he'll make a "where's the new stadium?" kinda gesture.

 

I don't think McCarty was a failure, but I don't think he was ever the right fit for our midfield. I didn't think it when we traded for him, and I didn't think it when I saw him play. He's a good linking player in a 5 man midfield, but DC wasn't going to play that this season, and I doubt DC was going to drop a starting forward just to get the most out of McCarty's abilities.

 

Thing is, for all the drama that went with him, DeRo was still producing on the field at a rate above most attacking midfielders.

 

We needed an attacking mid. While I'd rather have kept Dax, it's not a surprise that if we were going to go the trade route to get an attacking mid (rather than going outside of MLS), he'd be one of the guys that another MLS team would want and one we'd be more likely to part with than our young outside mids.

I think more than "United giving up on Dax" this was "United wanting DeRo" and United deciding to part with the player NY wanted to get him.

 

...and when he wasn't starting we gave up 4 goals in an hour to San Jose. On the other hand, when he was starting, we were holding down last year's MLS finalists (0-0 Dallas, 1-1 Colorado) and getting a 2-1 win over Seattle. You can certainly view his absence different ways.

I don't think McCarty was a failure. I think not also getting an attacking mid was the FO's error.

I like this. I am admittedly wary re: the head case comments (don't get me started on ego - just about everyone in professional sports has an over-inflated one of those ) but still like this.
