    Eh.........no big deal.

If you don't want to listen to the trophy ceremony in Spanish...........then don't allow Mexico to win the trophy. If the US had won, it would have been in English.

You do realize that the article has nothing to do with him not "accepting a loss" right?

He gave credit to the Mexican players, his gripe is with something totally unrelated to the game.

What a strange response by you.

I prefer that in English someone tells these guys how bad they played. Howard played the worst game of his career.

That being said what else is left to get rid of Bob Bradley?

Let's say the Gold Cup is in Mexico next time and the US takes it. Do you think they will do the ceremony in English? :p

The only network that purchased rights to air every single match of the tournament happens to be a Spanish speaking one, so why wouldn't they have the host from that network do the ceremony?

If Timmy wants to complain about this, maybe he should convince some US networks to give the tournament the coverage that it got on Univision and its affiliate channels.

Chaps my ass that he had to have this kind of a game in a final. But, honestly he was due for a bad game. I think we haven't given our back line enough flack over the last few years because of just how good Howard has been consistantly.

Now look at us all. We're all un an uproar about how bad it is. maybe it's good he had his bad night tonight.

We need to launch a revamp of our back line, Plain and simple. Where the F is spector by the way? when did he fall out of grace?

I, for one, do not care. I find Timmy's nativist attitude strange and disheartening [especially for a biracial Jersey kid with immigrant parent(s)] and it smacks of the sort of "English Only" nonsense one hears in certain political circles and from older ladies in line at the grocery store, convinced that the checkout girls speaking Spanish are talking about them. Meanwhile, our kids study French and Spanish for a dozen years and can barely speak a lick while their counterparts in Europe seamlessly transition between 3 or 4 different languages. Whatever.

He didn't say it should be in English only though. CONCACAF is a bilingual organization, officially. Everything should be in both English and Spanish.

I think Timmy's point is that the ceremony, which the US was required to be present for, turned into a Mexican celebration to play to the crowd. Maybe that is understandable -- they did win. But its a little bit of a slap in the face, especially if you are requiring the USA players to participate in it after such a disheartening loss. They actually required the guys to take a team picture with their silver medals after the match while Mexico was receiving their trophy. I mean, come on -- how eff'd up is that?

If its going to be a ceremony solely to cater to the Mexican crowd and team in their native language, as champions, then let the USA go sulk in private in the locker room, at least.

Besides, Timmy is allowed to blow off some steam after a devastating loss. He's earned it.

i thought it was weird that is was spanish only.

i guess CONCACAF thought all mexicans spoke spanish. they probably didn't realize that some children of mexican heritage might only speak english.

The point is it would have been in English if the US had won. Just sour grapes from Howard, and interpreted as nearly racist to Mexican Americans. Maybe he didn't notice but the crowd was almost entirely spanish speaking.

Next thing you know, Canada (or Montreal) will advance to a CONCACAF event final and be upset when the post-match ceremony isn't conducted in enough French.

Howard was probably upset with how they played, the fact that they lost, the fact that it happened on home soil, and the fact that at the end of it all they have to sit and listen to the ceremony conducted entirely in Spanish for the non English speaking benefit. He probably wanted to just leave. Heck even Lebron got to leave the court right after the Heat lost to the Mav .. he did not have to sit there and listen to the Maverick's coronation.

CONCACAAF puts the Gold Cup in the US to make money and have the tourney hosted well and they choose to have it narrated in Spanish for the benefit of the majority of the fans watching and attending.

It sucks but it is life these days.

If the US won then the Rose Bowl would have emptied quickly. That would also have been insightful and depressing.

I thought it was the custom in international sports events such as Olympics, World Cup, etc. is to do all announcements in the main language of the host nation, in addition to announcements in other languages.

I've always like Howard and thought of him to be a professional. I will let this one slide on Timmay as I'm hoping he wasn't thinking clearly when he said it. Anything coming from CONCACAF should be in at least English/Spanish. Though Fiore was attempting to say everything in Spanish and English, he failed pretty bad, that is on CONCACAF picking someone that probably was too happy to be there and not doing a professional job. Also, Howard should think that of the 46 players on both US and Mexican squads, over half have spanish speaking names so having them in Spanish makes more sense, less issues with name pronounciation.

Maybe the fox articles says this too but I picked up from one article that such a ceremony violates:

So if this is so, I'd be even more on TH's side....it almost seems like a legal argument, not that one country or culture got a bad deal.

I always found this funny. As someone who is bilingual, I never understood why English speakers are convinced that if you are speaking another language in their vicinity that you must be talking about them. My dad, who's first language is Spanish, said in Latin America he never really heard people complain about the foreigners in their country speaking their native tongue in front of them and he sure as hell never thought they were talking about him when they did. I wonder if this is some sort of paranoia that Americans seems to carry with them. I personally am never bothered by a group of foreigners speaking their own language in front of me.

If he wanted to vent about something (besides his own putrid performance on the day), Timmy should've dropped an F-Bomb directed towards all the sports fans in this country who don't give a crap about soccer. If we were filling stadiums with 80,000 U.S. fans the game would probably be at a level where getting blown out in home soil finals wouldn't be quite so common an occurrence.

it's a slap i the face to hold the tourney in an english speaking country and not speak in their language.

Nothing against Mexicans, I speak some spanish. But he's right. It would not have been in English in Mexico city. I'm not positive because they didn't show it on tv here but i doubt the Champions league final stadium announcer in Wembley conducted the ceremony in Spanish. This about respect. I have no problem with it being in spanish and english. Or if it was in Mexico only being in Spanish. But to ignore the native language of the host country is disrespect.

Essentially agree, but the only way to guarantee "respect" in this context is to fill the stadium with red, white, and blue shirts, rather than green ones.
