I've been working on the script that calculates yellow card accumulations and other misconduct stats. It's still a work in progress. Please let me know if anything looks wrong. The full report is available at my stats site.

    Current items of note:

Yay for another stats site. I noticed last week that the links for the 2010 stats on the WPS site does not load properly beyond the "league leaders" page. I'll definitely be looking through your site :)

Do you have comprehensive stats from 2010 and 2009? I ask b/c the WPS site stat archives have bugs/link problems for the 2010 season.

One question about clearing card accumulation. The WPS page says:
But does that mean a player must be rostered to count as a game played clean of cards? Or does the player have to actually take the field?

It says "play any length of time." Time sitting on the bench doesn't count. Didn't Carli Lloyd have to sit a game last year after coming back from an injury and almost immediately picking up her fourth yellow card?

I currently have only the statistics contained in the box scores and season results pages. I took a look at the team stats, and I'll work on getting that data. I saw what you mean about broken/missing links on the WPS site, and I managed to find some of the missing links. However, there are some team stats that appear to be missing altogether. I don't know whether they can be recovered or if they are simply lost to the ages. For reference purposes, here are direct links to the existing team stats pages.

    ATL: 2010, 2011,
    BOS: 2009, 2010, 2011,
    CHI: 2009, 2010,
    GP: 2009, 2010,
    LA: 2009,
    MJ: 2011,
    PHI: 2010, 2011,
    SB: 2009, 2010 missing!, 2011 missing!,
    STL: 2009, 2010,
    WNY: 2011,
    WSH: 2009, 2010 missing!,

When the WPS first started, they used to post box score PDF files that contained more information than what is there now. Some of that data gets rolled up into the team stats, but the per-game statistics aren't available. I'm sure they exist somewhere.

The League's yellow card rules are a bit vague as written. The one that I had questions about is "three yellow cards to a single Player in three consecutive games played". It could be interpreted as consecutive games played by the player. Or, it could be consecutive games played by the team (which seems to be the correct choice from looking at how the League has been applying the rule). So, sitting out a game is enough to break the streak as far as consecutive yellow cards is concerned, if I understand the rule correctly.

I think you might be referring to Anita Asante (SB) in 2009. I believe that the sequence was:

    20090510.CHI-SB, received yellow card 1
    20090515.LA-SB, clean game 1
    20090523.WSH-SB, received yellow card 2
    20090531.SB-BOS, clean game 1
    20090607.STL-SB, clean game 2
20090613.SB-LA, clean game 3. (If she can get another clean game, her yellow cards will be cleared.)
    20090617.SB-CHI, received yellow card 3 (D'oh!)
    20090628.SB-STL, clean game 1
    20090704.SB-BOS, clean game 2
20090712.BOS-SB, clean game 3. (Just one more clean game and she's free!)
    20090715.SB-WSH, did not play
    20090719.SB-CHI, did not play
    20090722.STL-SB, did not play
20090725.BOS-SB, received yellow card 4 (Oh, well.)
20090805.SB-GP, suspended this game due to accumulated yellow cards

The only other player ever suspended for yellow card accumulation was Chioma Igwe (CHI) in 2009. Carli Lloyd received only 3 yellow cards total in both 2009 (CHI) and 2010 (SB). I uploaded the 2009 and 2010 misconduct reports.

Carli Lloyd did have to sit out a game last season due to card accumulation. I remember it clearly -- my 2 sec google search yeilded this reference to it.

I sent in a "technical problems" report to the WPS webmaster about the broken stats links. Who knows who is minding the website store, though.

Thanks. Apparently, I was wrong about what WPS considers to be "consecutive games". In this September 12, 2010 AmericanSoccerNews.Net article lbarker wrote,
If that is the case, I have more questions about what constitutes a consecutive game. Specifically, if a player is rostered but doesn't play, how does it count? That is the current situation with Heather Mitts (ATL). Two consecutive yellow cards April 24 and May 1. On May 8, she was on the bench but not substituted in. On May 15 and May 21, she was not on the roster. The May 17 WPS discipline web page update didn't list her as being in peril due to 2 consecutive yellow cards, indicating that the May 8 game might have counted towards breaking the streak of consecutive yellow cards.

The yellow card explanation says "Three yellow cards to a single Player in three consecutive games played" (emphasis mine), which suggests that you have to be on the field in order to break the streak. They might not have realized the situation with Mitts due to the long gap.

I think that the "must have played minutes in a game" interpretation of the consecutive yellow cards rule is probably correct, though I'm still not entirely sure. My mistake might have been thinking that the League's discipline web page was accurate and complete. I assumed that the person updating the web page simply copies and pastes results generated by a computer, but perhaps they are keeping track of everything manually. I see that the discipline web page is missing other information, like Carli Lloyd missing from the 2 cautions list, which seems to be evidence that it is being done manually.

Based on the above interpretation of the rule, here is what I believe is the current jeopardy list:

    Players One Caution From Suspension
    * Heather Mitts (ATL) is in jeopardy due to 2 consecutive yellow cards.
    * Colleen Flanagan (ATL) is in jeopardy due to 2 consecutive yellow cards.
Lauren Sesselmann (ATL) is in jeopardy due to 3 accumulated yellow cards.
Keelin Winters (BOS) is in jeopardy due to 3 accumulated yellow cards.

    Players Two Cautions From Suspension
    # Carli Lloyd (ATL) has 2 accumulated yellow cards.
Analisa Marquez (ATL) has 2 accumulated yellow cards.

    * = incorrectly characterized on the discipline web page; should be consecutive rather than just accumulated
    # = missing from the discipline web page

That would be in line with how FIFA and UEFA rules regarding yellow cards tend to be, that only game you play in counts.

    There is that ;)

I just checked the WPS yellow card accumulation page and Mitts is now listed as being in jeopardy with 2 consecutive yellows.

A note to people collecting WPS statistics. The League is known to correct/update box scores after they are initially posted, especially in the week or two following a game. So, you may need to keep re-downloading recent files to have accurate results. I'm not sure if there's a way to determine programatically if a box score has been updated. (It may be that the box score URLs change when a new version is uploaded.) Instead, I just download new copies every now and then.

I started looking at referee statistics. Please let me know if you see any mistakes. The below lists are limited to the top 10, out of 26 total referees. The "by cards given" list is a sort of average cards per game statistic, with red cards weighted heavier. It includes only referees that have worked at least 3 games. I've used a "red cards per 10 games" statistic because it seems more useful to look at.

FYI, the referee for the 20110529.PHI-WNY game was:
    Christina Ibanez, 2.0 ycpg 0.0 rcp10g (2g,4y,0r)

Does anyone know if the referee named "Juan Carlos Rivero" is the same person as "Jose Carlos Rivero", or can someone confirm that they actually two different individuals?

Referee information is missing from the box scores for the following 5 games: 20100619.ATL-CHI, 20110416.ATL-SB, 20110424.ATL-WNY, 20110501.MJ-PHI, 20110522.BOS-PHI. I'll probably need to track down this information manually, if it exists. Currently, the missing information is accounted for as:
    unknown, 1.6 ycpg 0.0 rcp10g (5g,8y,0r)

    Referees by cards given
    Juan Carlos Rivero, 2.0 ycpg 3.3 rcp10g (3g,6y,1r)
    Ted Unkel, 2.0 ycpg 2.1 rcp10g (19g,38y,4r)
    Jose Carlos Rivero, 2.1 ycpg 0.9 rcp10g (11g,23y,1r)
    Sandra Serafini, 2.0 ycpg 1.0 rcp10g (10g,20y,1r)
    Veronica Brito, 2.2 ycpg 0.0 rcp10g (6g,13y,0r)
    Michael Donovan, 2.0 ycpg 0.0 rcp10g (4g,8y,0r)
    Daniel Fitzgerald, 1.7 ycpg 0.7 rcp10g (14g,24y,1r)
    Bryan Roslund, 1.5 ycpg 1.2 rcp10g (8g,12y,1r)
    Dallas Malhiwsky, 1.8 ycpg 0.0 rcp10g (6g,11y,0r)
    Jennifer Bennett, 1.8 ycpg 0.0 rcp10g (9g,16y,0r)

Referees by number of games worked
    Kari Seitz, 1.2 ycpg 1.4 rcp10g (21g,25y,3r)
    Ted Unkel, 2.0 ycpg 2.1 rcp10g (19g,38y,4r)
    Margaret Domka, 1.5 ycpg 0.6 rcp10g (16g,24y,1r)
    Daniel Fitzgerald, 1.7 ycpg 0.7 rcp10g (14g,24y,1r)
    Daniel Radford, 1.5 ycpg 0.0 rcp10g (13g,20y,0r)
    Felisha Mariscal, 0.9 ycpg 0.8 rcp10g (12g,11y,1r)
    Jose Carlos Rivero, 2.1 ycpg 0.9 rcp10g (11g,23y,1r)
    Sandra Serafini, 2.0 ycpg 1.0 rcp10g (10g,20y,1r)

    Wishful thinking.;)

It's funny, because the first year, I kept my own detail game-by-game stats for each and every player. But it was so time consuming and the WPS site was doing such a good job, I decided to quit doing it. Now that I've quit keeping track on my own, it seems it's gotten worse and worse each year and finding historical stats is hit and miss depending on the team, the year, etc.

And I've got your back on rep for BJB.

The League discipline page still doesn't list Mitts or Flanagan as having 2-consecutive yellows. I already posted the chronology that explains why Mitts would be on that list, assuming that the "must have actually played minutes in a game" interpretation of the rule is correct. The chronology for Colleen Flanagan is:
    20110424.ATL-WNY, 1st yellow card
    20110501.WNY-ATL, 2nd consecutive yellow
20110515.ATL-PHI, on the substitution roster but did not play
(hasn't been in a game since then)

    2011 Through Week 10

Dear Ben James Ben:--------------Thanks very much for the info,it is exactly what I needed. Seems to me that ref interpretation of rules differs between Refs and also between which teams/games they are officiating at. I'm not good at stats but you have helped me in sorting things out.Again Thank You.
