Yeah Im trying to convert my friend, whose pretty open minded and sports savvy, to soccer. I got him and another friend to go to the US v Spain game so thats a pretty big step. But last week when I convinced, well forced, my buds to watch the NY LA game, nobody knew that New York Red Bull was the team name, they just thought that Red Bull was a sponser on the jersey and the stadium. They actually got angry that the team is named after a company and wanted me turn off the game. I couldnt blame them, but they are a great team to watch and they were playing the Galaxy so I didnt comply. Im glad I kept it on because it was a great game, and a couple friends who payed attention enjoyed it. On to the media coverage of NYRB, Ive noticed that Newsday will write a blurb about them the next day after a match and after a big match like last week theyll actually get a decent sized article.... I cant remember anything like that last year although I didnt followed MLS like I do now.
Many people in NYC think MLS is a joke because of the name Red Bulls. While they didn't follow MLS either with the name Metrostars around, at least they knew of it's existence. lol
It really is sad because it is such a great team, but I just cant bring myself to root for them, no matter how much I love to watch them play. I do hope though that they do win something this year, either the SS or the cup. Just so soccer can start getting a little more recognition here in New York and they can start getting some butts in the beautiful arena... Im thinking about taking in a game there this summer
they should just start marketing NYRB towards all the guidos in jersey and wait until NY gets the cosmos, then Noo Yawkers can be bothered to call themselves soccer fans.
Hahahaa noo yawkers +1 repped, yep pretty sure this is what will happen if the ny2 gets the expansion slot, I know Ill be a fan.
Pro soccer, maybe, but not the oldest rivalry in US soccer. Just to pick one: the Milwaukee Cup has been awarded to the winner of the Wisconsin-Milwaukee/Marquette soccer game every year since 1973, a few years before the Sounders and Timbers first played.
I dont want to take the thread off topic more than it already is so Ill give you the short answer which is, its just not in me. You know when a team is yours, you can feel it in your heart, and I just dont have that die hard feeling for them. And there are several reasons that contribute to that, which is pretty much the same ad nausem list that everyone who decides not to root for RBNY has.
no major reports of violence in this one...only a shoving match randomly, but great news to hear. Both sides worked to the brink to make sure nothing went off.
The thing that always cracked me up about the FO worrying about the ECS and the TA mixing it up is that it is almost NEVER anyone from either of those groups causing the problems. It's usually some random drunk jackass trying to start something, giving a black eye to both sides in the process.
again, truly amazing nothing went down. Definitely quite the opposite compared to years past. Congrats to both sets of fans', let us carry this through to July 10th in Portland.
The match day thread over at SCUSA has a story on the TA who was sent back two attendees to the buses by the TA. Apparently both tossed a water bottle down below and was sent to go wait the rest of the game in the bus. One of the guilty admitted to being stupid while drunk. His away game privileges have been revoked. Self-policing indeed.
tv ratings are in, a portland blog explains them well. http://www.stumptownfooty.com/2011/...attle-score-in-the-ratings-and-an-explanation
MLS Reserve League match before 3,393 at JELD-WEN Field on Monday afternoon. Seattle reserves @ Portland reserves http://www.portlandtimbers.com/news/2011/05/seattle-tops-portland-2-0-mls-reserve-league
And the ever so predictable Dos a Cero result. Roger Levesque is effective against Portland, even as a defender
More than a few of those were traveling Sounders fans. One would imagine a similar amount would come up to Seattle from PDX as well.
In fact, there's video of one of our goals via the ECS that were there [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuZ0r_1sM28&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - Carrasco goal 5-30-2011 Timbers vs Sounders reserves match‏[/ame]
I'd say mostly because the 535+ of us that were at Qwest the night before had only just gotten home a few hours before that match. Personally, I was asleep at the time.
