I don't know about that. Rost was a pretty good freakin' keeper back in his day. I think Kraft also has the potential to be another of the nice list of Bayern-raised goalkeepers people predicted great things for and nothing ever became of them. Naturally.
True. But the other statement still stands too. He can go either way. Both Stefan Wessels and Michael Rensing had far more outstanding appearances than Kraft. And yet somehow both wound up spending significant time on the rolls of the unemployed....... I hope you guys do get Kraft and he does succeed. However, don't forget there are two sides to every story.
did many of these ex-Munich goalies continue their downward slide after they left Munich? Did any regain their form after leaving Munich?
Rensing has to a certain extent this past half-season for Koln. However, he still showed some of HUGE CRACKS he showed at Bayern. Rensing's biggest problem is that he tried to be Oliver Kahn on the field before he earned the right to even try. He got handed that Bayern job and it all went to his head. I don't believe Wessels has ever found himself again. But he still has time. A SMART goalkeeper can be great into his late 30s. I wouldn't put Kraft into the Wessels/Rensing category yet. But I also wouldn't assume he's going to be good just because of what he's shown so far.
Well Kraft has signed. Goalkeeper problem solved (for now) I hope the best for him. He seems to have a good head on him and he's certainly shown even in the few games for Bayern that he is a good goalkeeper and has the potential to be very good or even great. Hertha will give him a chance so we will know sooner rather than later.
Just wanna congratulate the Old Lady for dominating 2nd Bundesliga. Top flight doesn't seem right without a Berlin representative, Good Luck next season!!!
Agreed, how long has it been since the Bundesliga has had a representative from what used to be the other side of the now-defunct (thank goodness) Berlin Wall? I don't know too much German, but from what I've learned from listening to bands like (Berlin's own) RAMMS+EIN and also the commentators on Sky Deutschland, I do know this: WILKOMMEN!!! I actually know more than just that, I know quite a bit, and with the help of my trustee to my late mother's trust fund, Doris Loeschen, who is originally from Germany having moved to the States years ago, I am (progressively) learning more of it.
isn't the club that just fell under VFL bochum for that 3rd spot located from the Eastern part of Germany?
Only 3 teams in the 2. Bundesliga are from East Germany, 1. FC Union Berlin, Erzgebirge Aue and Energie Cottbus. Gruether Furth, the 4th place team, are from the Franken area of Germany, near Nurnberg. This area was part of West Germany.
3 or 4 teams is what you'd expect, considering the East's share of Germany's population. Still, considering there's no representation in the top flight, the addition of Hansa and Dynamo would present a much needed corrective. I'm rooting for RB Leipzig becoming the East's champion in the Bundesliga. They ought to make it into 3rd league next year. And then their march through the leagues will continue, I hope.
I think he thinks the Berlin Wall separated all of West Germany from all of East Germany. and/or he thinks all of Berlin was "East German." edit: I think Germans would be surprised to learn that most Americans don't know where the Berlin Wall was I really wanted Fürth to be promoted...could've been four Bavarian teams in the Bundesliga!
Well, that wouldn't be me in that list of Americans. I was stationed over in Germany and happened to be there right as the wall was coming down.
Nice. Where? My family and I were in Heidelberg before the wall came down, then in Frankfurt and Wiesbaden afterward.
You're comfortable with having four Bavarian teams and none from the new Länder? Fürth also doesn't have a 1st Bundesliga-worthy stadium. And, hey, it's got that cheapo "Trolli Arena" name on top of that! Nah, I'm quite happy with Fürth sticking to its tradition of 4th/5th season finishes. But back to Bavaria: It's actually quite nice to have a team from Swabia, Franconia and Bavaria proper coming from the Freistaat. All three major parts of the state are thus represented.
Well, I really would've enjoyed some Franconian derbies between Fürth and 1. FCN. Oh well. True. Very excited for Augsburg, and the Bayern/Augsburg, Stuttgart/Augsburg, and Nürnberg/Augsburg matches. Maybe in 2012 some East German teams can make their way up!
I was stationed in Wertheim but just by luck happened to be put on a free trip by my unit right around the time the wall went down. It was wild seeing Russian soldiers in the gaps of the parts of wall that came down. Not supposed to take pictures but I did.
The Schwaben-Derby is the one I find most tasty. Energie? Union? Hansa? Erzgebirge? Dynamo? Not exactly prime promotion material. But hey, it'd sure be a wonderful surprise. In any case, some nice Ostderbys right there.

Many Americans under 25 don't know who the vice president is or their own state capital. They probably think the Berlin Wall is on Wall Street.
