Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Jesus Christ, how many threads are going to be about how its so great seattle and Portland are ADDING rivalry and passion to MLS. What a joke, it was here before!!!! Again i will re-open this thread in 15 years and see whats up...
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Actually, no, it wasn't here in the MLS before Portland started play in the league this year
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport I think the general idea about the Seattle-Portland rivalry, is for MLS to use it to attract casual fans, as comments in this thread have stated. The number #1 reason casual fans will complain about, is that soccer is boring to watch. Why is the World Cup not boring? Because the games are filled with passion, and atmosphere. This is exactly what this rivalry will bring. And MLS needs it. It's not going to save the league, or make the league millions upon millions of more dollars (at least not now), however it will footprint that Soccer in America can now be measured against its counterparts in other countries. So yes, if you ask me, it is important enough to talk about, because it's what the league needs right now. They are getting their SSS's, now they need the passion. This will help fuel it no doubt.
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Funny, I saw plenty of passion from MLS fans in the 90's. Barra Brava, Section 8, the Casbah, etc. Seems like its been here for a while.
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Well, if by seeing what's up, you mean are Portland and Seattle still hating on each other, then yes, the passion/hatred will be the same if not higher. When it comes to soccer these cities have been hating on each other since 1975.
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Atmosphere only takes the game so far. It might work for the 1st year but if the teasm are playing crappy soccer, then atmosphere will not carry over to the casual

Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Seattle Coach Schmid and Portland Coach Spencer talk on ExtraTime Radio http://www.mlssoccer.com/extratime
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Don't get me wrong, props for the people who show up and have been doing so for years... but come on its just not the same magnitude. Both BB and S8 have their moments, but its not really comparable. And I know what we've got up here isn't the end all be all. Someday I'll get to Beunos Aires and jump with Los Borrachos del Tablon, but until then...
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport I hope you covered your eyes as you came when you typed that
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport This! I know a lot of people who enjoyed the NY 5 LA 4 game in Beckham's first season with LA. Even my friend who is from England, but doesn't follow MLS watched it and said, "It was such a good game that I couldn't turn it off!"
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Currently featuring on the front page of the Wall Street Journal online, looks to be running in print edition tomorrow: http://on.wsj.com/j7hlfW
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport "We just get drunk and have fun," said 22-year-old Sounders fan Brooke Dubay. "They're angry." The Portland supporters are so angry, she added, that they remind her of the kinds of fans that follow American football, a species she considers "more angry." true
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Clearly the NY2 team needs to be in Williamsburg. Flannel + Irony = MLS success!
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport That says a lot about this "great historic rivalry".
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Holy mother of God, the two cities are going absolutely effing nuts right now, and it's only Thursday. Every outlet that allows fan comments (facebook, twitter, news websites, etc) is just lighting up vigorously. Really hope all of this excitement is shared by all, and we can progress American Soccer to the next level. I know some may say "I don't give a shit about your rivalry", I understand, but if you care about American Soccer, you will at least see the significance. This kind of stuff brings the change. Excitement is contagious. We need this for our sport here.
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Or about the writer's grasp of the material.
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport It's press man. It's ink. When was the last time MLS had any coverage in the WSJ? Not saying I agree with every piece that has been covered, but still..
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport WSJ knows what to write about when they want hits. The bullet to Osamas face just ain't pulling them in any more
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Don't get too excited. It's on at 11pm in the east half of the country and a HUGE number of Portlanders will be watching this match in pubs. It's a big deal, hundreds (not hyperbole) of pubs, bars and restaurants are making an event out of this match in town, so the away town viewership bump might be entirely under realized.
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport kinda like this young Brooke?
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Comments like that just make me laugh. I bet she think's all the Portland fans BBQ babies too.
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Brooke Dubay sounds like an insufferable, sef-important twat. Which makes her the epitome of a Sounders fan. Go Timbers.
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport Brookes comment makes me laugh too because of how simple the statement is and just how true it really is. Portland fans are children.
Re: What can MLS (and casual fans) gain from Seattle/Portland - May 14th, 8pm PDT (ESPN2/ESPN Deport REALLY?!!? From what I have seen there isn't a whole lot of difference between the people that make up the ECS or the TA other than the cities that they live in. But I guess it's human nature to hate the outsiders. EDIT: Both seem to have preconceived notions of what the other teams supporters are like based on bigotry, stereotypes, and lies.
