I watched the highlights on dcunited.com and i guess your play by play guy was on, HE IS AWESOME. Im very jealous(i love dave johnson but your guy is fantastic). So Who is he?
We get a lot of this. His name is Arlo, surnamed White, I do believe. He is very good with the English language, and he does not use, unlike certain annoying American counterparts, English anouncer cliches. If he did, he would not, at least, misuse them. He has done two things excellently since coming "across the pond." He has done his homework on MLS, and his situational awareness is seems almost equal to Dave, although he is a newcomer. And he has largely used American sports lexicon competently. Which is preferred to Christian Miles using English lexicon incompetently.
i think he should do other MLS broadcasts as well.. maybe the friday night games... I love when there is only one guy in the booth.. that guy is like the old baseball announcers who just make you want to listen to the game they have such a great oratory tone... your guys are very lucky to have such a fine announcer, and so it MLS as a whole
Thank you ECU. It's not lost on us how fortunate we are to have Arlo. I wouldn't mind if he did more generic MLS games, provided we would be able to keep him for all of our games.
If you like Arlo, you should listen to a couple radio interviews he did on a sports show in Seattle (from 2010). They are pretty fantastic. http://www2.kisw.com/listen/arlo-white-mens-room and: http://www2.kisw.com/listen/arlo-white-mens-room-pt-2
You know-- that would make a great "Would you rather?" question.... Would you rather-- Have the our turf replaced with the best new type of field turf, or have Arlo replaced with Kevin Calabro?.....(and be stuck with your decision for the next 3 years)
I would rather Qwest have a Cintrex* field than have Calabro back. I had high hopes for Calabro and was really excited when he was announced. I grew up listening to him call Sonics games and was hoping for even some small portion of that passion to show up in a soccer broadcast, it would have been amazing. Instead he never seemed to get into the game and rarely, if ever, did any homework. Between his first and last games there was little improvement. Even as uninterested as he was in the job you would think he could have figured out how to pronounce at least the Sounders names if not the opposing team. Gotta have someone who at least gives half a damn about the job. It would be better to just have the stadium mikes and no announcer than another announcer that couldn't be bothered to put any effort into the job. http://www.cityofseattle.net/parks/maintenance/BobbyMorrisSiteAnalysis-text.pdf
