does anyone know what attendance at Rio tinto will be like tonight?? Will there be extra press there as well?? Not sure if people in salt lake know about the game. Someone please fill us in.
Sold-out. GM Garth Lagerway on the ExtraTime podcast said that tickets never went on sale to the public because season-ticket holders snatched up the extra tickets in the pre-sale. There is an 8-page section in the Salt Lake Tribune about the game so I think people in the city are aware of the game.
...am I being a jerk for wishing Larry Miller was alive to see this? This would have kil...er, I mean rankled his feathers to say the least!
Former Utah Jazz owner who was a big player in SL. He used his newspaper, political and tv news influence to spread disinformation about the RSL stadium project at every turn. He nearly succeeded in killing the deal, which on paper was a no brainer with little downside to tax payers. Only the governors wife resurrected it and during a vote it was passed overwhelmingly in a bipartisan manner. Even the democrats, who are second class citizens in Utah, and who would take any chance they could get to promote a cause against the Rep. begrudgingly had to admit it was a good looking deal. It was such a no brainer that Checketts Wall street backing stepped away because a deal was taking to long to complete because of the idiocy going on there. They got tired of holding the money for a smart deal that was being torpedoed. Checketts got another backer immediately and the deal was saved. RSL's success and comp to the Jazz for the sport entertainment dollar in Utah would have really ticked him off. Would have loved to have seen it.

LOL. I knew that and forgot. I have followed all of the stadium deals in this league closely. Part of it business interest, and part of it rooting for the game here in general. That deal, from everything I knew about it, was an excellent one for the state. The way Miller almost killed it was disgraceful. Of course he denied it, but it was his paper and TV station that were 24 hour anti stadium, lies and deception the whole way through. Maybe Checketts should do a little jig on his grave. He's getting the last laugh, and the governor's wife should have an honorary seat at Rio Tinto. A true MLS/USA success story. Overcoming scumbags to succeed. To morbid?
To be fair, I've never held anything against Larry Miller regarding the stadium drama. First, it was expected that he would fight against a competitor. That's what businesses do. Second, it was personal. He and Dave Checketts have an interesting history. The finger I've always pointed at is Salt Lake County. The mayor used it as a political pawn to make himself look good as the guardian of the public purse. The county committee that reviewed the proposal was unduly influenced by Miller, and they should have been impartial. Larry did a LOT for sports in Salt lake and personally put the city on the sports map IMHO. It can be argued that without the Larry Miller and the Jazz, Salt Lake never would have been a serious contender for a MLS franchise.
While business is competitive...I will always have an issue with the way Millers media basically lied. I despise the media in general, and this was just another example of there is no such thing as an honorable, responsible, unbiased media. It was pretty bad. Huge issue in our country. I agree about the mayor. Does the lil prick still have his season ticket?
