To echo Jason's point, it only applies to defenders not offensive players. However, when Archundia is reffing in a match involving the American national team, it is still considered offside even if it came off an American defender.
To the credit of the ARs-- I feel like they've gotten a lot of close calls right this year. This call was not close, and he didn't get it right.

That's just the way it is in sports. Emotion causes fumbles and mistakes and weird things happening. RSL played well considering the emotion involved, and the elements.
Most definitely. The wind and the mist/rain/snow - whatever it was. It was freaking cold. I felt so sorry for the players out there running around in shorts. How they don't all catch colds after that, I don't know. They say the wind and wetness make their passing game more difficult to execute, the ball does weird things, if it doesn't go right to their feet, it'll veer off, or it'll pick up speed when it usually doesn't. Elements and RSL are water and oil. It is their greatest foe.
So he probably appreciated Maicon Santos avoiding the pass a week or so ago. Really interesting broadcast by the way. Looked like a total 50/50 approach between RSL and Colorado. Dunny did the PBP, Marcelo Balboa did the color commentary. Sponsorship announcements were split between the teams/markets, and so were the ads up in the scorebox. Never seen anything like it before in MLS. Working on something cool to take its place. Why? Balboa kept saying "Spindola," no E.
I think it's been done quite a few times. The Chicago-Dallas broadcast from week 1 this year, and I know the Fire did it a few times last year. Not sure about the ads in the scorebox, but I they did promotions for both teams and had 1 commentator from each side.
I'm with you dred. btw, some are saying the foul call leading to the fk was weak but I didn't think so. Mullan clearly kicked Olave in the midriff imho. Thought that part of it, anyway, was a good call. But I saw the non-called offside right away. I thought for sure they would call it back but I guess not. Then I figured on the replays maybe there was a man out of the picture who was keeping Espindola onside but I didn't think so. Of course, neither announcer mentioned it at all (totally unprofessionally). Kind of ironic, 'cause there were 1/2 a dozen other close RSL offside calls which both ARs got correct during the course of the game. But they (theh one in particular, obviously) blew this one. Also, how bad was Saborio in this game? Just terrible. I know he's coming off a knee injury but he has a donkey touch, makes poor decisions, can't pass, the works. If he plays like this v. Monterrey he won't be much help to RSL at all.
He's done better than that. It's hard to play our passing, possession game in rain and wind. They were all having problems. So, I assume it affected Sabo, too.
that's putting it kindly...fell asleep rather quick... Sure, not having rested well last few days helped.. but most credit goes to LAG. If once upon a time Sigi lost his job over his unexciting team..then Bruce needs to be arrested and put in jail over what he does for those of us paying money to watch MLS matches on TV.... Just too much uninspiring garbage
I know he scored a goal v. Saprissa but Sabo has basically been horrid the past few weeks for RSL. To me anyway, the man is definitely in a major funk. It was no surprise to me that Kreis yanked him off instead of Espindola in the 68th minute for Paulo Jr..
I noticed that, too. But the "Kimrua" thing was a mistake by the Rapids equipment manager on the jersey.
post game Kreis interview, this video has a perfect angle of the goal on the opposite side of the cameras, from field level in the first 10 seconds. you can see the side ref appears to be in position to see the goal and has absolutely no obstruction preventing him from seeing espindola slide it in. espy was offside, ref didnt call it. pretty impossible to tell if a colorado player touched the ball, but i dont think it matters. http://rsltv.neulion.com/mlsvp/console.jsp?catid=1490&id=13683 i also agree that sabo is in a funk right now, he's been there since the first saprissa game. i thought his first few games were pretty good, in the columbus series he was solid and the first little bit of the saprissa game. the second half of that game and on he's been off. i dont know if it was all the press and pressure of playing saprissa and going home to play against his former team or what, just in a funk. good thing kreis understands the mentality of a striker and can work with him. kreis has done a good job corralling the monster that is espindola, im sure he can help sabo work through this second season funk right now. it may be also that teams are adjusted to sabo, his tactics and how he plays, they've seen him from last year and know how he plays a little bit. now its up to sabo to pull himself up and counter those adjustments.
ya i noticed that when he came on, i kept looking at the jersey and i couldnt tell if my eyes/brain were doing just automatically adjusting to the miss spell or if there was an actual problem with the name.
No Colorado player touched (let alone "possessed," which IIRC is more important here) the ball between it hitting the post and it ending up with Espindola. You can see that pretty well from the original angle (or even better!: from the angle behind the goal in the MLSsoccer.com highlights). This new angle makes me wonder where the AR was lined up, because he didn't appear in the frame of the camera until after the ball was essentially in the net. From my days of lining, I seem to remember being told to be a yard or two behind the wall/last man on plays like this...so he probably would have had to run a minimum 10 yards in 2 seconds in order to be perfectly in line with the rebound and thus able to see the offside. Possible, but maybe a lot to ask. Doesn't make me any less upset that it was missed.
LA has only 5 goals in their 6 matches, with only 2 coming from their forwards and even both of those were scored off set pieces. In fact, the Galz only have 2 goals - both by Juninho - off the run of play. After 6 matches. Didn't someone say they'd miss Buddle? Yup. Someone sure did.
SoccerByIves - "Watched Espindola goal a bunch of times. Folan made offside call VERY close. That's a bang-bang play, tough call live" RSL just put themselves in a position to win.
Wait, your powers of foresight saw a team losing the golden boot winner struggling to score goals at the begging of the next year??? Can I get lotto numbers!?!?!?!?
Is it me or Chad Barrette still as bad as he was with TFC last year. He has the making of a good striker , but something is missing, I got it he can't score even without the keeper in goal.
I'm guessing Ives thinks the debate is based on the initial free kick, not Paulo's touch. Folan is behind the play at that point and not a part of the offsides decision making. (Ives get a Rapids related detail wrong? Shocking!)
I'm sure the AR was probably about 6 yards out of position just because of where he started and how fast the free kick happened. Still, the goal area line should have make it very obvious that it was a clear offside.
