Let me help you with that [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJXkgSy-INw"]YouTube - Smithereens - Only a Memory[/ame]
With the team we defeated in '96 for MLS Cup (coming back from a 2 goal hole in a monsoon), it's time to resurrect Volveremos. The Barra used to rock and bounce with this song: Volveremos, volveremos. Volveremos otra vez. Volveremos ser campeones, Como el noventa-y-seis. (repiten/repeat) pronunciation guide: vole-ve-raymose, vole-ve-raymose. vole-ve-raymose otra bess. vole-ve-raymose sehr cam-peoh-nays, cohmo el no-ven-ta-eee-sayys. translation: we're going to be champs again!
I'm not a member of La Barra Brava. Hope it's OK to suggest a song anyway. For the Red Bulls game, sung to the melody of the children's song "This Old Man": This old man named Hen-ry he can't beat young Bill Hamid with a knick knack paddywhack give a frog a bone send the Red Bulls crawling home! (Vocals start at 0:44. I'd slow the tempo.) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKj_4dk45KY"]YouTube - This Old Man The Children's Marching Song Mitch Miller[/ame]
We succeeded in singing depeche Mode up here in Toronto....were going to try it with the masses Thursday. It sounded great
It was pretty awesome, like the win. There is also the "Fields of RFK" Liverpool song too. I have no voice left. *squeak*
Agreed x100. It works for the National team maybe, but in all the many times we've sung it I don't even remember us getting off a shot.
Suggestion #1: get everyone that's going to do it near each other the first time it's done, so that it sounds strong. If they're scattered, it won't catch on. People can spread out a little after that, to help it catch on further out. Suggestion #2: photocopy some sheets and pass them out. Yes, I know, the lyrics are as simple as can be. But we've seen countless times that the Barra ends up learning even the simplest stuff wrong; and once it's "learned wrong" by everyone, it's *impossible* to fix it.
I thought it was just me. It seems more like a dis on our team, "geez losers, just score a goal, it's so f'ing simple, that's all we ask." I hate it, won't sing it. (which obviously has caught on like wildfire ) Squashing that one would be good. I'd even sing Depeche Mode in trade. And I haven't done that since sometime in the 80s.
Respectfully disagree on this one. Although it's not all lovey and emotional like the depeche mode song, I don't think it's disrespectful. The way its sung, it sounds like it tries to get a fire under the players for them to push for more shots, more goals, crisper play, etc. The beat to it is upbeat enough to not sound negative, and it does have a little edge to it. And the yankee-doodleness makes it patriotic
my only suggestion to this is that we speed up the "we slip & slide" part. It was being dragged out and it's much faster than we sang it.
Okay I lied. That wasn't my only suggestion. Here are some suggested lyrics that are more DC United centric for the Depeche Mode song. What do you think? it would be cool if we got most of the loud side singing it. When I see DC, I go out of my head And I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough All the plays United makes & all the goals they score I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough We sing & jump as we fall in love And I just can't seem to get enough of dododododododododododododododo dododododododododododododododo dododododododododododo
Can you get the first and third lines to rhyme? e.g. something like "Every time that DC plays, the crowd begins to roar," or something like that. That rhymes with, and has the same length (syllable count) as, the third line.
Gina, yeah it was dragged out...i like the we sing and jump ALOT better.....noone will get the slip and slide, lol
I was thinking it needed to rhyme too but couldn't come up with something. I like your suggestion about the crowd beginning to roar but I don't want to use the word "plays" in the first & third line. Does that make sense? Lemme think about this. And if anyone has suggestions, please speak up!
Yes it does. I think it'd be good to work it out today, though, so that we have time to prepare aids for Thursday. Useful website for this sort of thing: http://www.rhymezone.com/ It's also good to try for the same syllable count in the first and third lines. It may seem like nitpicking, but it really isn't: if they're significantly different between rhyming lines, people will screw up on the rhythm; to make the lines the same in real time, people will stretch syllables out -- and they'll stretch *different* syllables out, so it'll be harder for everyone to stay together. This is not just a Barra/soccer-supporter issue; it's something you have to think about whenever you write music for a crowd to do.
what about When we see United, the crowd begins to roar And I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough All the plays DC makes & all the goals they score I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough or with an extra word in 3rd line... When we see United, the crowd begins to roar And I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough All the plays THAT DC makes & all the goals they score I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough though 2nd version makes 3rd line 13 syllables, it might work. I'm singing in my cube here haha
