http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/ne...rinho-receives-more-career-advice-free-charge Is he joking? Yes probably. But this is why the MLS needs the New York Cosmos. No other American soccer club has the cache to even be mentioned like that in a lighthearted way.
Great the future Cosmos team will be over-shadowed by "The Great One", I look forward to hearing rumors about how Catona and Mourhino don't agree on anything in the global press...
It's been way to quiet on their PR front recently. Good lil way to get some press again. I said it previously but when I read stuff like this it just starts to strengthen my thoughts on the subject. NY Cosmos probably carries more weight (the name) without an actual team.
The intern disaster aside, what have they done better? They've drawn attention to themselves by hiring Pele, Cantona, Jones and an Italian criminal. And?
Copa NYC...Free academies...free soccer balls[kids next to us last week where we play soccer had one of the balls] Times Square event..Stickers up in all 5 boroughs . Flushing Meadows events..There is more , but I can't think of them now
Okay, let's step back here. You said that the Cosmos have done more then the Red Bulls, and I believe that statement to be false. How is that being hostile?
But you have to admit it's been a way more effective campaign than RB's. Also there has been a sticker campaign in Los Angeles as well. Metros, you have to admit that the youtube marketing campaign with the Bulls running thru downtown Manhattan was an epic fail. So much so that the spoof by the Revs was an epic win. In the short amount of time that the Cosmos have been at this, they have shown that they have a clue as how to reach the soccer mind & heart of NY'ers. That is something that was ALWAYS been missing in the NY market (metrostars included). Sorry to the MetroStar fans, just my opinion.
Between this and the other thread, it's clear you've got a little bee buzzing in your bonnet. How about this. International attention, which is important for the value of television rights. And Copa NYC alone represents much more than the Red Bulls/Metros have done in NYC. Probably in the whole metro area.
I don't know if you all have seen this: http://www.newyorkredbulls.com/news/2011/03/red-bulls-go-all-new-adidas-all-red-bulls-promotion The first sentence might as well be "in response to our absolutely lame and stupid to non-existent marketing to new york city for 15 years, and the Cosmos success in a short period of time, here's a new marketing campaign with Umb, uhhh Adidas."
Also..saw on twitter that A guy in England tweeted about seeing a big promotion for the ny cosmos in the window of a soccer store...international market? Check
Billboards in Times Square in 2006 and other parts of city since then. Advertising at Penn Station and at PATH stops (although admittedly that's for Jersey commuters) last year. It's still too far and few between but it's been done. I'll admit the stickers are an excellent idea and an attention grabber for sure. But whether the campaign has been successful remains to be seen, and I'm not talking about opening day 2014. EPIC FAIL is probably not enough to describe it. When I see the Cosmos mentioned on CBS, NBC or ABC news I'll agree. Until then they're totally irrelevant to the city outside of a few thousand hardcore fans who pay attention to the beautiful game. Which thread and what did I say? When MLS starts getting something for international television rights you'll have a point. I think it's great that people across the pond are paying attention, but it does nothing for the city. It's arguable that the signing of Henry has brought more media attention to MLS as whole, rather then the Cosmos parading Pele and Cantona. The Copa NYC sponsorship was a great thing they did. Bringing Pele was a great publicity stunt. I do wish the Red Bulls did more of this in the city, and admittedly they do not. However they did sponsor the DUSC supporters tournament at Pier 40 last year. As far as who has done more for soccer in the whole metro area that not even an argument. When the Cosmos build a stadium in Queens then we can compare.
