    Rob, thanks for posting this.

Just for clarification, the '89 national team (which may include some of the '89s currently in residency but mostly players who are NOT in residency) is playing at the U16 age level, not in the U19 supergroup, where the 86'/'87 team is playing. See:

    http://www.dallascup.com/tourn/sked/age/arch/U16.html

However, that means they will be playing against some players who may be as much as two years older. I think they will be challenged at this level.

I would be suprised if the U-15 team won the tournament. The different between a 14 year old and a 16 year old can be a whole lot. I think they will have a good showing, while the U-18s should really contend for the title.

Just a question, when the US teams play an IMG team, is that other people at the Academy, but not associated with the National Team Pool?

So would I... but you never know. I wouldn't be surprised if they advanced out of group...or didn't. At this age, you're never quite sure which team is going to show up. However, they do have the benefit of having played together a few times.

Yes, that is my understanding, though GersMan is the guy to ask here.

    I thought u-16 meant players under 16?
Yes, IMG academy is a place where athletes from all sports are groomed.
Some pro athletes that have been groomed by IMG:
MLB-Dwight Gooden, Gary Shefield, Nomar Garcipara
    NBA Pros-Vince Carter, Al Harrington
Tennis Players-Serena Williams, Anna Kournikova, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras
    and many more...
The thing i'm not sure on is who pays for them to attend, it could vary. I also do not know if this is affilated with the IMG agents.

I messsed up with my puncuiation. There should have been a period before the clause about the U-18 team.

I know that there are lots of other sports at IMG, but who are the soccer teams?

Soccer teams that serve the same purpose as the other sports. It's an academy that setup to improve all skills for the players attending. There is no affiliation with the national team other than training at the same place. They might go to same school and have the same mental conditioning but they are not part of national team setup/player pool. I'm sure if there was a standout player that could help the national team they would invite him into the residency insted of the player paying for IMG training.
Here is the website for IMG soccer academy

Thanks for the clarification. One more question, the PDL team. Is that in any way associated with the residency program?

Of course, the other main difference is that you pay....a LOT.

    See:

    http://www.bollettieri.com/soccer/default.jsp?programId=3810&info=35

    $27,500 annually for residency.

Wish I could go. I'd like to see a younger player from my town play, Nick Stevenson with the Austin Flyers U-17s. Their team is supposed to be one of the best in the nation. BTW RobtheAggie, is that Texas A&M?

If they're playing in the Dallas Cup, it's pretty much a given that they're one of the best teams in the country.

What're the odds that this year we finally get an American team to win the supergroup?

Nope, NMSU. We are the Aggies that usually get beat by the big schools in Football at the beginning of the year. A&M gets beat by the big schools at the end of the year :)

More like: what are the odds an American (non-natioanl team) team will not go 0-3, and have a single digit goal difference.

Sounds like I'm dissing the Amis, but I'll be the loudest guy cheering the Ami sides. It's just a situation of playing against professional youth/reserve sides.

Well, some recent results suggest that the odds can be better than you suggest.

However, it depends on the field.

For example, in the 2002 Dallas Cup, these American teams had the following records in the U19 Supergroup:

Sockers FC: 0 wins 2 ties, 1 losses -- did not advance
Irvine Strikers: 2 wins, 1 ties, 0 losses -- advanced, lost in semis
Solar FC: 1 wins, 1 ties, 1 losses -- advanced, lost in Finals

Strikers beat CF Monterrey; Sockers and Solar both tied Nottingham Forest, the eventual winner of the SuperGroup.

This field was arguably weaker than some in the past. In 2003, the field was very strong. All the American club teams, when faced with a foreign side, lost.

Didn't the u-17s lose in the final last year? I know any US team is going to be an underdog, but we're not THAT far behind that we're going to lose be 3-4 goals a game.

The Dallas Texans team in supergroup is a fabulous group with some very talented players, but I understand they enter this event seriously depleted by injury.

Chicago Magic are the defending USYSA National Champs, but they can't have been outdoors for very long.

Interested to see how the U18 National Team does in this event. Looking forward to seeing the U15 Nats at 2 and then the 18s at 3:30 on Sunday, and of course through the week.

minus the girls and 19 "b" level" group:

true, the supergroup doesn't find alot of lopsidedness, but in the bracket rounds of the younger ages, there are lots of 6-7 goal losses by top US clubs.

the 2000 sockers did awesome though, they beat some good good teams, and they were entertaining in their own right.

Here’s the U18 team roster with where they’ll be playing ball next fall and their DOBs. All players will be freshmen unless otherwise noted. I think Grella and Avila are HS juniors but I haven’t confirmed that yet. And, to my knowledge, this is Orosco’s first camp with a youth national team and I can’t find any info on him and web-searches just yield a bunch of info on guys named Mike who played baseball with Jesse Orosco! (Given Jesse’s longevity, there are a lot of such players.)

Marcus Rein, GK, Wake Forest*, 1/27/87
Stephen Sandbo, GK, Southern Methodist, 2/23/87

    Greg Folk, D, UCLA, 4/10/87
    Mike Orosco, D, ???, ???
    Karl Schilling, D, Connecticut*, 8/20/86
Adam Sloustcher, D, North Carolina, 07/31/87
    Nathan Sturgis, D, Clemson, 7/6/87
Julian Valentin, D, Wake Forest, 2/23/87
Tim Ward, D, Saint Louis*, 2/28/87

    Eric Avila, F/M, ???, 11/24/87
    Michael Bradley, F/M, NY/NJ MetroStars, 7/31/87
    Daniel Szetela, M, HS Sr.^, 6/17/87
    Nico Colalluca, M, Virginia*, 5/23/86
Christian Jimenez, M, South Florida, 11/30/86
Dax McCarty, M, North Carolina, 4/30/87
    Mike Videira, M, Duke, 1/6/86

    Mike Grella, F, ???, 1/23/87
Rodrigo Hidalgo, F, South Florida, 8/21/87
    Robbie Rogers, F, HS Sr.^, 5/12/87
Jamie Watson, F, North Carolina (So. in 04), 4/10/86

^ Expected to sign a pro contract in Europe
    * College choice not officially announced by the school

There are 13 87s, 5 86s and one unknown. The 86s turn 18, or have turned 18, this year so if any of them shine well enough to get some Euro interest, a la Kenny Cooper a year ago, they could sign in Europe (not England, of course, unless they're eligible for a EU passport, in which case being 18 isn't relevant.)

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Jamie Watson showed well enough to get an offer or two, especially if a team has been following him since Finland.

I wonder if any of the current Thailand National Team players were on this team. It is purpoted that Thailand has its best chance ever to qualify for the World Cup this year. 13 years would put them around their mid to late 20s.
