    +1

    I love Gates.

I enjoyed what I had of Quicks at the tailgate, but I'd like to try it at the restaurant sometime where it is at its best.

OK Joe's was good when I had it over the summer, but honestly there are a couple places I like here in Wichita just as well.

Where is Quicks in relation to the stadium? I'd love to try it before a game sometime - otherwise, it's a long drive just for Q.

i haven't gotten around to trying quick's either. that's actually probably higher on my to-do list than winslow's is (but then, until today, winslow's wasn't even on the list). i REALLY need to get to lc's as well. it's sheer madness that i haven't been there yet.

EDIT: i really do think we should have a permanent thread in nsr for bbq.

I think so as well. Anyone know anything about Wabash BBQ? It seems to have a following on Urbanspoon.

Was a nice meal out with everybody, CJ, Korede and Mike Jones tonight. Just nice and relaxed --

I gotta say I preferred the burnt ends at Winslow's over Gates. My meal was in the 'ok' category, not sure I will be going back to Gates anytime soon. Guess at the end of the day 'good' really is 'what you like' --

Yeah -- its about 10 minutes north of me and I have been there a few times although not recent enough to compare to Gates and Winslow's. Big food, cheap plastic bucket seats, plastic table cloths ... never had a bad meal there. Pork Tenderloin sandwich should be illegal its so big. Its in an old Railway Station.

At least in this area of the Northland it seems to have a good rep.

I'm dying for BBQ, I'm glad I saved the money but lord, all this talk is making me hungry.

I keep meaning to get over to Wabash but I really do hate Excelsior Springs, bleh.

Sounds good. Are you far from the stadium? I can't recall. I know I'm going to come to at least some of the midweek games, I'm sure we'll want something other than whatever the member's club offers, at some point.

Its been a good while since I had good BBQ besides one fantastic lunch at Okie Joes (thanksfully its close to me).

Beyond that, I haven't had any good BBQ lately. At all. Argh, I need to get my fix.

Liberty, MO -- 30-40 minutes or so from the stadium. It is probably to much of a round trip to be feasible ---

Ouch. Yeah. I guess we can always do Okie Joe's on Strang Line on the way in. Isn't/wasn't there a Gates off of 435 somewhere? That might work without being too huge a detour.

I need to find some options for food on the way in - we're already going to be doing massive amounts of car time, so we might as well have good food and not the same thing over and over.

Just north of 435 on State Line. It's a few blocks from my house :D And I'll go on record as saying I preffer Gate's to Oklahoma Joes.

There's a place on 89th and Wornall called Smokestack that's quite good too. It's owned by the family that owns Jack Stack, if that adds any points.

This place looked pretty good when they were on Man Vs Food on the Travel Channel. I've never been though.

We (Quicks) are in the KC star BBQ Bracket. If you get bored go to kansascity.com/entertainment and vote. We are a 15 seed up against #2 Bryants, but its still an honor to be in the top 15 in KC.

Same I love OKJoes, but gates still has it on sauce alone for me. :)

i feel like i've said it a million times, but as far as the top 3 goes... bryant's has the best meat, gates has the best sauce, and ok joe's has the best balance of both.

i agree with all three with a tie going to Bryants and Jack Stack(Martin City). They both have really good meat.

I have been eating at Gates and Bryants since 1968--and they have been the KC icons for longer than that. So, all discussion of KC BQ should start with those two. At one time, Heywards was really good (late 70s). BBs Lawnside has a great atmosphere. Oklahoma Joes--great cole slaw. But, for real BBQ--you start with Bryants and Gates--both locations on Brooklynn. There is no such thing as bad BBQ, just some that are better than others.

Everyone needs to eat at Quicks. It is a duty for a Sporting Supporter.

gates is awesome (easily in my top 5), but the reason it's not my #1 is specifically because of their sauce. it's not as good as ok joe's. ok joe's sauce is the best bbq sauce ... period.

i have yet to be able to disprove this as far as any kc location goes. i've never had flat-out bad bbq from anyplace in the kc area. i reckon that there has to be some bad bbq in other cities/locales, though. you know, if the sauce is bad and the meat is really dry. that's bad bbq.

A lot of people forget about Rosedale these days... my great-great uncle started it in 1934. They switched owners a few years back (to someone in the family) and I hear a lot of things have gone down hill. My grandpa ran it before he split off and started Quick's in 1964. The point is, I would bet 90% of KCK BBQ came out of Rosedale.

Also, I agree that it is hard to make terrible BBQ. There is a lot of good barbeque, and very few GREAT BBQ's.

You are batshit crazy. I lived a block away from Winslow's for 3 years, and only went there when I was dying for BBQ but was too lazy to drive to Gates or OK Joe's.

But, I'd kill for some Winslow's right now. The BBQ in LA is horrible. Well, except for Kansas City BBQ Company in North Hollywood, that place is legit. Best beans I've ever had. The burnt ends suck though. :(

It's just meat and sauce. While I dont think you can really make bad BBQ (unless you burn the meat), I dont think BBQ can be great either. It is all average food to above average food in my book. BBQ is probably the last thing I would ever choose to eat.
