"According to the news (big sigh) white people are the new minority. I don't even know what that means, but apparently it means white people get less rights." "I would like some responses about why (unhappy face) apparently life is now going to suck for me, okay?" -NappyJosh777 on youtube. Personally, I blame our education system and anti-intellectualism. And journalists. Here's the actual data they're reporting that is scaring the crap out of NappyJosh777. 2050 Projections White 47% Hispanic 29% Black 13% Asian 9% NappyJosh777 seems like a relatively well-meaning archetype to me. Still reachable. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW9cjKo2FN0"]YouTube - Whites are the new minority![/ame]
2050 is 39 years away (when i am subtracting i am Latino, so i do not suck at Math ) I guess the lesson here is: Never get in the way of a white man's preemptive whining....
Yeah, Archie Bunker was saying the same. I kinda get it. Any time you have different rules, some people won't be happy even if there are pretty good reasons for the different rules. A common one in Chicago among the Eastern European immigrants is to bitch about school classes and voters' ballots being in Spanish. "When we came here we had to learn the language, why don't they?" Of course that's an old complaint, I heard the same about Hispanics/Spanish in California in the '70s.
I agree, how many countries in latin america would have a ballot in English. If you asked they would laugh. When I go to vote in California there are translators at the polls. Guess who pays for that.
If there was a Chappelle-styled racial/ethnic draft..... this guy may just be on my trade list... (or transfer market to make it sound more soccer like)...
Well, that's because in California it is in the interest of some powerful politicians and political interests to encourage Spanish speaking people to vote. Thus, we get the Spanish ballots and the translators. In Latin America countries, I can't think of any powerful political parties or interests who might feels the need to court English speaking voters as a constituency. You are right that in Argentina such a proposal would be laughable. The much invoked bogeyman of "foreign influence" would ensure that any effort to assist foreign language speakers to vote would backfire on any politician who'd dare propose something like that. But regardless of motives, what is there to complain about? If we have a large number of people who are citizens and have the right to vote, and speak Spanish -or Vietnamese, whatever- as their primary language, then it does seem logical to offer assistance for them, so they can exercise their rights. Last I've heard, the right to vote is not linked to a citizen's ability to comprehend the English language.
Thanks. It is not. Fortunately one of my former employees was able to find a good job already. But I'm winding down my imports business, I'm hoping to close it down soon, there are just too many headaches these days. I think it's about time I start planning to relax and work free-lance just for fun.
Yes, all those shooting across the border take a toll on the import business. By the way, 47% in 2050 does not mean they are a minority, it means that they are the Plurality. Also, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Alba, Cameron Diaz, they may technically not qualify as white, but their sons and daughters will qualify as white. Also, would people consider Jeff Garcia Latin?
This is funny, and I can totally relate from my younger years. This reminds me of an important point: "Latin" in the U.S. really means "you have Meso-American or South American Indian blood". I assume you can pass as "white" because you are of Spanish ethnicity?
Good question. We all want to know if argentinefan is white like Messi and Heinze or mestizo like Maradona and Tevez. Or if his sister looks like Dorismar.
It's funny to see groups of Argie tourists in Italy. They look just like the Italians, except they're speaking Spanish, but their Spanish dialect actually sounds a lot like Italian in terms of accent and intonation. Of course, I'm sure a lot of the Argentine tourists in Italy have Italian ancestry, which is why they go back to the old country on holiday.
Spanish, French and English ancestors. No Italian blood in my family, although there are a few Italian in-laws to brighten up the family parties.
There was an Argentine comedian who had an act imitating Argentines in Italy who think they can pass for Italian speakers when in reality they are speaking Spanish with an Italian accent and slightly changing the Spanish words, like adding an e at the end, or a t in the middle. "Motzo, per la nena, jamone." It was funny, but it's actually true.
You know what they say. Los Mexicanos descendieron de los Aztecas, los Peruanos descendieron de los Incas, y los Argentinos descendieron de los barcos.
There is a dark side to that fact, sadly, which is part of Argentina's 19th century history and it has to do with genocide. But hey, whites are oppressed.
