Only one of those players was seriously injured. Carragher deserves proper punishment for his thuggish assault. As does anyone else who does likewise. Consider this. Van der Sar received exactly the same punished as Carragher did. Think about that.

I have been over all of this before in the transfer thread. Our midfield options are good a couple of things each but they need to be used in certain combinations or the overall midfield simply does not function. There are numerous teams, even outside of the top whatever, that can boast of having better individual players than we do in central midfield.

Come on, we need an update on Nani. Are there any new rumours going around?

It's awfully quiet from our camp today. I bet you there were some serious and very major team talks today.

My impression as well. Yesterday Fergie probably had them on the hair dryer. And in the upcoming days, it'll switch to the "Us against the world" mentality, when he tells them everyone will write them off, etc and they have to prove otherwise.

    Greetings neighbour! Welcome!

Make yourself comfortable. It's not often we see a blue on these forums.

Your timing is impeccable though! I don't know if you realised this when you clicked on the link, but you happen to have stumbled on the match thread of a game that Manchester United lost.

    What luck!

You'll find as you become a regular here that we're quite open and inviting to fans of other teams. You might have to deal with a bit of banter, but that's all part of the fun isn't it?

You will get the occasional bitter gobshite who pops across to bask in the glow of one of United's rare defeats, but don't mind them. I personally accept them with the sense of charity one should bestow on fans of a team who, despite spending several large fortunes on players, still has to make do with vicariously enjoying the success of others against their rivals.

It must depress the living crap out of them.

*PS - Johno, this is one of those posts. :D ;)

Is anyone else astounded by the lack of press that Nani's antics have gotten? Sure, everyone is talking about his assist to Kuyt, but his actions on the pitch yesterday were downright deplorable.

Yes, Carragher should have been sent off; the tackle was reckless and unforgivable. It should have been a straight red.

But afterward, Nani rolls on the ground, then gets up, sprints to the referee, pushes him, and for no apparent reason falls down again, as if in shock. Then, while he's being stretchered off--which it looked like he didn't want to be--he strikes the ground right next to the referee. I think he may have actually tried to punch the ref's foot.

Carragher should have gotten a red, but so should have Nani, for the shove to the ref. Instead, Carragher gets yellow and so does Van Der Saar.

    Unbelievable.

You are beginning something that cannot end well.

Just read the part about the ref's foot. I bet you are having a laugh.

    Well let me correct myself.

Dont get me wrong. A long time ago, 98% of this board was against any switch to any formation involving 3 central midfielders. It was automatically seen as negative. People blamed and hates Carlos Quieroz for it. Sorry to pull a johno here, but I was one of the few who actually loved the idea and argued for us to use it. I'd love for us to switch to a 4-3-3 full time. But it seems like 4-4-2 is here to stay with this club. So got that out of the way.

As far as Carrick and Modric or any other potential partner. I dont think it will hold up against the best midfields in the world. But I also dont think SAF would play that kind of midfield vs a Barcelona.

Carrick defensively, is better than anything we currently have. I just dont think there is any point is buying a Mereiles or a Makoun to replace him. We'd need to buy an overall better or more complete player.

Its silly that a few people keep mentioning Raul Mereiles because of what he is doing at Liverpool currently. Its silly because he does not even play central midfield for Liverpool. He doesnt have to worry about tracking back or tracking initial runs because there is usually Lucas there to cover, and even Gerrard is playing deeper than him.

We all agree midfield is bad, but I feel like you ahve mentioned some average players in the past for us. We've already have our experiences with Djemba's and Klebfoots and Liam's etc...

He updated his Facebook and Twitter with this message...

"thank you for your support after my injure. i hope to be back really soon."

Indicates it's not a serious injury. Could well have easily been though.

So SAF didnt do any post games? I know about the BBC shit, but not even the assistant manager came out?

Heads must be rolling, and maybe this can be a blessing as far as the composition of the squad.

    Nope.

Sky, talkSPORT and MUTV all didn't get any words from anyone. They hold rights as well.

Wasn't anything to do with the Liverpool game, it is because of Fergie's FA charge.

The hole in the middle is still there. It's just the donuts gone stale.

If we still had Ronaldo and Tevez... the hole would still be there, but we would be 12 points clear in the PREM. :)

Well done. That's probably amongst the most inane posts I have ever read.

Even a poster on rawk makes more sense than the drivel you just posted.

okay. well we rate most of the ones i suggest differently. i mentioned a few most would say are average now like Pogrebnyak (before he moved to Stuttgart) since back then and even now people believe we dont have funds available for a big name buy. outside of those i think the Makoun types i mention are more than average. in Makoun's case he wasnt playing much at Lyon but that doesnt mean he is a bad player like van der Vaart or Maxwell @Inter. i wouldnt rank them as average but not as super stars either. quite frankly i think Kléberson aside the other two are below average. or at least if they are average i wouldnt bunch Makoun etc with them.

regarding 4-4-2 i dont mind if it stays if we can use it effectively. however my fear is it will stay and so will the current midfield set up. i read in one of the tabloids that Ferguson is to receive a £100m budget for the summer for Bale, Young, Rodwell and Henderson. dont believe it especially as they said Bale for £30m which i just cant see happening. Rodwell and Young at £20m each i can believe though.

So....it's a day later, and nothing has happened wrt Phil Dowd. I'm amazed, though I know I shouldn't be.

Jitty says it's all fixed -- or maybe that it's all just occasionally fixed. That would almost be understandable -- more understandable certainly than seeing that smug, pompous jerk stand there while the Liverpool players mobbed a player down on the ground writhing in pain.

I had thought that reviewing referees decisions would be worse than the occasional bad call, because for every Eduardo facing the press lynch mob there would be Stevie G. again waltzing past another crime scene (after decking the dj for picking the wrong music).

But at least that system leaves the possibility of fixing bad calls. What do we have now? No way to correct obvious glaring mistakes. No one who will explain what happened or how such play can be tolerated or ignored.

It also leaves Nani forced to play in a league where there's simply no interest in his safety or welfare. Honestly, if he decides to mail it in for the rest of the season, could you blame him?

Except that Rafael's tackle was much worse. He went in two-footed and studs up and luckily Lucas jumped out of the way or a broken leg was a serious possibility, whilst Carra went in slightly late, and was not malicious, he tried to get the ball though it took a bounce and Carra misstimed it and yes did heavily graze Nani with a metal stud. but it really is Nani's fault for wearing such tiny shin pads. A regular sized one would have prevented the gash.

Hope Nani is ok, no one wants to see injuries in soccer but Carra's tackle was no worse really. Rafael's was more a straight red than Carra's. His could be a yellow half the time in the EPl and the gash as I said was only the result of improper equipment.
