i dont think it matters where a song's tune comes from... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES5EWE_CLVk"]YouTube - The funniest football song/chant ever[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1TD95M8Fe4"]YouTube - One Man Went To Mow[/ame] this is a traditional kid's tune from the UK, with some not-so-kiddy words. the reason i suggested "do you hear the people sing" with the changed words is that it is a melody (regardless of its origins) that instills a lot of emotion in anybody that hears it. it is very powerful. (yes, i do believe that a tune, on its own can do such things) the words and message that i put to it, i feel, fit the current situation of DC and the barra... its a sort of "we dont care how bad shit is, we will stand here and fight till the end" vibe. i know its a bit outside of our normal comfort zone when it comes to new chants, but i think its a good song, and at least worth giving a shot. i could be wrong, and i know not everybody agrees with me.. if its just too far of a reach or the words arent quite right, thats fine.. but to dismiss a chant purely by where the tune came from is bs in my opinion.
We use kid's tunes as well: Wings of an eagle - My bonnie lies over the ocean Come on DC score a goal - Yankee Doodle We're all part of Benny's Army - Jesus loves the little children (Betch ya didn't use those words in Sunday school. What makes a successful CHANT (not an anthem or a terrace song): 1) Short 2) Repeats (notes/music and/or words) 3) You can pick it up after hearing it a couple of times without using a song sheet Remember that a few hundred people essentially have to learn the chant in the stands on the fly without song sheets or music unless you want trumpet guy to play the tune.
you completely missed my point on why i brought up the kids song thing... nevermind on that. as for the what makes a successful chant, i do still think it works even with you standards... 1.) its is pretty short (roughly twice the length of come on dc score a goal) 2.) it repeats (the melody is the same musical phrase twice) 3.) you can pick it up very easy... the words rhyme nicely and will get stuck in your head after a few times. (see below) and actually, they dont have to learn it on the fly.. they can learn it at the tailgate, when people take time out to walk around, hand out sheets (when needed) and teach the chant to others. if a good number of people know it, people around them will pick it up. then we try it in the stadium and see what happens.. it worked out alright for united born, united bred... i know this takes a lot of work (ive done it before) and im willing to try it again... if it doesnt work, eff it, but hey, at least we tried. and no, i dont want the trumpet guy to play the tune. ----------------- FIRST HALF OF TUNE: Do you hear the barra sing singing the song of united men it is the music of a team that will not be beat again ---------------------------- SECOND HALF OF TUNE: (same exact melody) when the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums we'll f**** ing kick your ass when united comes how hard is that, really?
We used to do this one DC-ified [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIxoKN1e6VA"]YouTube - Chelsea fans singing carefree!!![/ame]
Back when the Barra started we would get drunk as shit and sing some crazy spanish stuff. It didn't much matter, it was all about loving the team and the group. Just sayin'......
I don't know if DCU ever did a "repeat" type chant, but I'm wondering if that would be easier to start since really only the front men would need to know it. For example, I went to see Roma play last year, and, with my limited 10 word Italian vocabulary, could understand: Front man: "Forza Roma" Rest of Curva Sud: "Forza Roma" Front man: "Roma Campione" Rest of Curva Sud: "Roma Campione" ...and this went on with stuff I didn't understand where it was really everyone repeating after one man. Might be something easier to pick up than a full new chant since you wouldn't need to teach it at the tailgate, and with the Barra being fairly compact into a few lower level sections, might work.
Now that DCU has acquired Charlie Davies, this chant is a no-brainer: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kke3UOuEEM&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - Charlie Davies Does The Stanky Leg![/ame]
To the tune of The Ants Go Marching... He's the striker they all fear Davies, Davies We all can't wait to throw our beer Davies, Davies He'll score us 20 you can bet He gets the ball, "it's in the net!" He's Charlie Davies, United's number 9 Nananananananana.... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar3zD1lWBmk&feature=related"]YouTube - EBANKS BLAKE IS WANDERERS NUMBER 9[/ame]
Now that Charlie Davies is on the team we can sing the Red Hot Chili Peppers song Charlie from Stadium Arcadium! "So much more than Charlie's wakin' me To my care and Charlie's shakin' me And tell my story And Charlie's makin' me And Charlie's makin' me smile Oh oh now"
I made an extended version of the Davies chant which is entirely too long no one mind me. Stole the two first verses i saw somewhere and added on to it doesnt actually work you would have to repeat the song like 10 times but i like it He started out at BC Davies, Davies Then he signed for Hammerby Davies, Davies Scored lots of goals did he Davies, Davies It was off to the French league Davies, Davies Signed for the Sochaux team Davie, Davies Took a trip to DC Davies, Davies For national team duty Davies, Davies Crashed on the GWP Davies, Davies Missed the action of Group C Davies, Davies But he's found a home with DC Davies, Davies He's gonna score loads for us, We're going to MLS Cup Charlie Davies DC's Number 9 My first musical publication
