Why didn't NE enter the lottery for Cody Arnoux? What did they have to lose? I watched both Arnoux and Schilawski at Wake, Arnoux was leaps and bounds better. With the thin state of the Revs attackers, what's the thinking there?
We don't know what the Revs have in the pipeline to bolster our attack so it's had to know just why they chose to pass. I don't understand why they passed but they obviously had what they thought was a good reason. As posted above it could be they are tapped out on the Cap
Arnoux has recently suffered a bad knee injury so if the Revs had plans to use the cap room and Arnoux wasn't a sure thing, I'm sure thats why they passed.
MLSsoccer.com says that RSL and SJ are now both precluded from participating in future lotteries in 2011. So its possible they are anticipating someone else being available in a lottery later this year?
Could be, but the only players who come through a lottery are players like this (ie. first professional contract [Arnoux was an exception with Vancouver trying to skirt its way around the rules]). Returning national team players/players who left MLS for a transfer fee are an entirely different mechanism.
Anyway: Only 6 teams chose to participate today. Many teams seemed scared off by Cody Arnoux's recent microfracture knee surgery and unpredictable recovery http://twitter.com/#!/soccerinsider None of the three lottery players - Agorsor, Arnoux & Veeder - are GA. As far as why Revs passed, in particular: "No GA status + little trade value." http://twitter.com/#!/kylejmccarthy
Whoever he tweeted in that last one is an insightful, valued contributor to the Revs Twitter contingent and everyone should follow him.
The Revs may be running out of roster room. They are adding four SI's and say they are trying to add a striker. With the draft class fighting for slots and the returning players from last year things are getting tight. Could just be Nicol et al things what he has in the pipeline is better than these options.
I think the reason the Revs passed was that they were afraid they would win the lottery and have to pay another player. Injuries aside, Arnoux would have been a great risk to take.
Idle thought: Soony Saad, who led the NCAA in scoring as a freshman, has left the University of Michigan to pursue opportunities in Europe. So far he hasn't landed a contract, though. Reportedly, MLS didn't know he wanted to go pro, but since it's become known that he's trying for a contract abroad, they have talked to him. I think it's possible he'll end up signing with the league and go into a weighted lottery. I wonder if the Revs would enter the lottery then.
