Fanaddict posted this in his news thread, but I believe this deserves it's own thread. Wonderful article, even if there is no sale impending. http://www.hottimeinoldtown.com/201...nd-how-they-might-suggest-a-chicago-fire-sale
After reading this article I hope that the team gets sold. If that isn't the case, then I worry about the financial ability of the team to compete. Rebuilding for the betterment of the future is one thing, stripping down an organization with no regards to competing is a good way to piss away any loyal fans. Florida Marlins circa 1997 anybody?
The top three executives that had left or were pushed out left because they were simp[ly being paid too much money relative to the rest of the executives in similar positions in the league. Andrew brought them in due to prior relationships and suggestions from friends.. but these people had little or no experience in soccer and were being paid high 6 figure salaries and produced little benefit for the team. Either Frank K is getting through to Andrew.. or Andrew is just cutting costs so he can stop the red ink.. But the top three executives leaving was a very very good thing.. The twit in communications knew little about soccer... She was about as in tune to soccer as dave greely was.. who quite franjkly disliked the sport when he was with the bears. All this being said.. i wish the team would be in the hands of local Chicago ownership.
So basically we didn't resign one dp, got rid of baggage, and a ton of be speculation? Nothing there. Meh.
I heard a rumor at the riot game yesterday from a long time fire season ticketholder, that a Dr munoz wanted to buy the Fire. She also said CJ brown might be back sooner than people think. Not sure how much reliance can be put in these rumors but there they are.
I know we have a lot of salary cap open, but isn't that free money? Would we gain anything by having the lowest wage bill in the league?
I don't care if there's a shred of anything in this article or not, I love speculation and rumor, there's a been a lack of news out of Fire office this season, and I enjoyed reading it. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQEIYjS1ePY"]YouTube - The Police-Canary in a Coalmine[/ame]
I'd prefer committed local ownership. But the article takes some liberties. For example, the three execs who left weren't very good. Also, the Fire is liable for their salary budget whether they spend it all or not; so operating at 50% does not present any added value or savings.
The only thought I have about that is that it's probably easier to sell a team without long term veteran contracts. A new owner would probably want to shape the team in his image.
Gotcha covered. [ame="http://www.hulu.com/watch/1296/arrested-development-fire-sale"]Hulu - Arrested Development: Fire Sale@@AMEPARAM@@http://www.hulu.com/embed/7ZTICD47DOLBP91bdRVViQ@@AMEPARAM@@7ZTICD47DOLBP91bdRVViQ[/ame]
$ 30-33M were the publically announced or mentioned figures for what Haumptman paid. Becky Carroll is leaving the Fire? Really? WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME THIS???? This is honestly the best piece of Fire-related news I've heard in months.
No kidding, I didn't realize this. So, what happens to the rest of the "budget" do they pay it to the league instead of the players?
Well, the league pays the players, regardless. So yes, in a manner of speaking. It's why it's called a "salary budget" instead of a cap. Every club is liable for $2.6 mil (or whatever the figure is this season) in player budget, paid to the league. The league pays the players. Any surplus would accumulate in the general playing personnel fund, but there can't really be a de facto surplus, given the "off-budget" player costs (developmental, DP, allocation fund dispersals, etc). This is also done for exactly the competitive reason behind the article: an owner can't tank a season or six to save money.
Well if this is all correct than the Fire have a hell of a lot of money to spend on bringing in some quality players. That should either give us hope that something positive is coming, or it should depress us as they obviously haven't done many/any big signings for 2011.
