    thanks for the info guys.

I just wikid Saudi Arabia and realized that I know next to nothing about the country. I'm on the first paragraph and it says the pop'n is 25 mil and 5 million are non-Saudis!! Are they foreign workers or does it mean people with non saudi citizenship?

edit: just finished reading the wiki article about KSA

I knew Islam was big but not this big.
Any of you guys have female relatives outside the country? Do they wear the niqab? I know it's a personal question but I just want to know if the whole thing is part of your core believes or solely because of the kingdom's laws.

My relatives wear Hijabs outside the Kingdom.

While the regional identities exist, I think they are not pronounced enough to cause a breakup.

What I'm talking about is that there is NO way people can organize. In Iran and Egypt, you always had different power groups like the Muslims Brotherhood and the Iranian Diaspora.

In Saudi Arabia, even Mosque imams are controlled by the government and there is no significant numbers of Saudis living abroad to trigger change and from even a young age, children are taught to revere the royal family. My dad recalls how in school they were taught more about King Abdulaziz than the Prophet Muhammed! (PBUH) (though ever since the 80s, the number of Islamic subjects in school has risen by a LOT!)

The Saudi interior ministry is truly god tier at controlling people

Of course you know nothing about the country, nobody does, unless you obviously lived there. You have the world's most ruthless government in the world, trying to control the most dangerous population for the West general global goals. If Saudi Arabia were to witness any uprisings, it would easily turn into a bloody affair. As burning_phoenix said there is no political activity in the country, so protests, and all that stuff is very small or ineffective. But there is always the option of underground militants, and thats where most people in the country go. You either keep shut about the regime and live your life, or you criticize and get thrown in jails. So the large percentage of protestors are basically rebels, or what the country likes to call them terrorists. Hundreds of list come out each year with men wanted for fighting the regime. Pretty much every other month a rebel gets shot after confronting cops around some city checkpoints. Cops here are well known for being very vigilant with young men. Getting your car searched at some checkpoint on a random street in the city is very common. Many people get their houses raided for gathering together and talking against the royal family, a friend of a friend got arrested even though he was just visiting his friend, turned into a political prisoner. Many more stories of people getting arrested thrown into jail tortured for 6 months without anybody knowing where you are. Most of the population despises Al Saud, but a few benefit from them so they support them. But when your pushed to either stay at home and enjoy, go out and talk and get jailed/tortured, smuggling a gun and getting shot, there's an obvious what most would do, but still many do other options but the government doesnt report accurately. Like Jeddah's latest flood, they said 10 people died, while other non official reports expect 1000 died. If you saw videos of the water there is no way only 10 ppl died. Oh well end of rambling.

And yeah most of my relatives wear niqabs while they are outside of the country, with a few wearing hijab.

    interesting stuff
I don't know why I'm suddenly interested in Saudi Arabia tbh

Is it taboo for saudi nationals not to wear the niqab in KSA?
Do all age groups have the same opinion on it?

btw, the more I read your comments the more I understand the actions of the IRanian regime. I think it was Phoenix who said that the diaspora help Iran organize rallies etc... I think you're overestimating their role. Nationalism is what drives people in Iran and it's the regime's biggest obstacle.

In the early 20th century the Pahlavi dynasty began modernizing Iran and destroying tribalism etc... By 1979 the society had changed so much that even khomaini's regime couldn't/cannot/will not reverse things. The pahlavis marginalized Islam and put emphasis on Iran's pre-Islamic history and achievements.

Imagine an Iran where the Islamic Revolution had happened before Reza shah's modernization and westernization campaign (around the same time the Saud family got to power in Arabia). Iran would be like KSA. KSA needs a Reza shah or an Ataturk. What do you guys think?

Edit: That question is really dumb when I read it again but I'm gonna leave it up anyways.

Not really, some women just cover their hair. Different regions have different levels of conservatism.

You mean slighlty less autocratic leaders? I'd prefer better thanks.

    Saudi64,

Damn dude, you must've been hyped up when you wrote that! :D

I disagree with you on underground rebels. I don't see it personally, at least not in the major cities. Places like Jouf, yeah.

well what would you rather have, tribalism and 7th century ideals or a few decades of hardships under a dictatorship but a future that you can be proud of? Iran was more conservative than even KSA back in the day. Because of Reza Shah, a secular democracy without sharia law is not just a dream but a huge possibility. The only thing stopping Iran from achieving that is the Regime and a minority of the population. The people are ready.
I don't think the people of KSA are ready though. Somebody has to change everything by force.
Would you guys even want to have a society like Turkey anyways? I should have asked that first.

    nimaa,

In the case of my family, they generally don't cover their face in the country (unless they have to). Outside the country it's 50/50 whether they cover their hair at all. Region and demographics plays a big part.

The Abaya is compulsory in the country (since 1979). Government institutions more recently have imposed a more extreme dress code. My aunt, who is a school teacher, has to wear an Iranian style "head supported abaya" and gloves when she goes to work.

As for needing a nationalist strongman to modernise, I disagree. The Hijaz in the early 20th century played an active role in the arab cultural renaissance and was the birthplace of the arab revolt. The Hijaz National Party even deposed the king and instituted a constitutional monarchy! (too late though, the war pretty much lost, the Hijaz surrendered only a year later)

Saudi Arabia's intellectual/political scene used to be a lot richer until the 50s/60s (long story, it was a turbulent time). The Juhaiman incident, then the Sahwa movement (extremist youth groups) pretty much completed the job in the 80s.

But the ability is there if given the freedom to.

So just a quick question you guys: Have you ever found yourself embarrassed to be liking something? Like you can't tell anybody of your secret hobby lest all your friends abandon you?

I'm kinda in that situation right now. :(
