AC St Louis officially going under and NASL provisionally losing 2nd division certification from the USSF is indeed a big story. This story probably has a bit more to go before all is said and done--but for now we have MLS and then a steep drop to Div 3 USL Pro. The continued instability in the lower leagues is yet one more reason why Pro/Rel is a pipe dream in this country.

But just instituting it will magically fix everything.

"A team like the San Jose Earthquakes might want to play in second division until they finished their stadium; maybe DC United would rather lower its overhead while it searches for a stadium solution; maybe the Columbus Crew would rather try their youth movement at the second division."

Wow. Weird. Just plain weird. If you read one blog for the luls today, make it this one.

So with many MLS teams still in the red ... we need to be infusing D2 with money? Hrmph.

Sure ... put D2 on the dole ... that will attract new investors. Free money always does.

I've always felt it would be good if each MLS team operated a D2 team as well. i wonder how much it costs to run a reserve team, and if that number is bigger than what it would cost to run a good D2 organization minus ticket and concession revenue.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION (because i cant stand babelfish translations!!)

PROJECT TO HAVE BOCA PLAYING IN THE NORTH AMERICAN LEAGUE IS ADVANCING

The little light bulb on top of the head of Xeneize's (nickname for Boca) chief marketing director went on,and it seems like his idea was liked by the administrators of the club. Pablo Fuentes is assuring us that initial overtures to have Boca field a team playing in MLS have already commenced. What is this all about?

Boca wants to establish and control a team in MLS following the succesful example set forth by Mexican club Chivas Guadalajara. [What the heck? successful how? does this guy even know anything about MLS? personal editorial over..]

In statements made to FutbolMLS.com, Pablo Fuentes, chief of marketing and sales for Boca, revealed that he had already had private initial meetings with MLS representatives at the latest edition of the sports marketing fair in Monaco.

"We were talking for an hour over the possibilities that Boca could play over there and establish a franchise with the name Boca Juniors, like Chivas did. As chief of marketing for Boca, it seems to me that it would be wonderful if we could achieve this, and honestly it seems like if it's something that is not too far away from becoming reality."

How would Boca go about accomplishing this? He went on "There are several ways in which it could be done, we could buy a franchise which would be the most expensive way of going about it, or we could come to a contractual agreement with an already existing franchise. There are many possiblities."

There have been previous meeting between Boca and MLS in the past, and we can confirm that there is a good relationship between the two. For now, MLS's immediate priorities are to successfully launch the two new expansion franchises in Vancouver and Portland starting in March, and then Montreal in 2012.

The recent success of argentine superstar Guillermo Barros Schellotto and other argentine soccer players in the league served as a catalyst to revive the idea of Boca seeking to establish a team that would compete in MLS. This is an idea that has its origins as far back as 2007, when Schellotto first won a championship with the Columbus Crew.

Will Boca come to the USA?

Not that I don't already know the answer to this question, but why is every mention of CUSA accompanied by someone claiming that they have failed? It's not like they're going bankrupt or anything. They have buttloads of sponsorship money, their attendance is in the middle of the pack in MLS, they're not going anywhere (as opposed to, say, DC United).

Not everybody has a problem with the idea of Chivas USA.

Interesting how in 15 years D2 activists have gone from -

We are better than MLS to ...

We don't need MLS to ...

We are in competition with MLS to ...

We will never join MLS or want anything to do with it to ...

Our system is pure and theirs isn't to ...

We will show them how it's done, these are real soccer clubs to ...

    Please bail us out!

It would be great if MLS could field full D2 teams, but the reserves just got back up and running, rosters were expanded, and youth systems are finally being emphasized.....it's not going to happen any time soon.

Regionalize D2 and have MLS teams loan players when needed...that has always been the solution IMO. The money and demand is not there for a country this size which makes it all cumbersome, unwieldy and way to expensive. Enough already. Let's be smart here.

Is this headline from 3-5 years ago?

Doesn't MLS have a Club Services division to get everyone on the same page in terms of demos and marketing?

I guess some owners have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the future.

Might be the headline for the Revs 3-5 years from now...if they're lucky.

While in the meantime, D2 markets have gone to MLS and bailed it out.

I wouldn't say bailed it out, but injected much needed life, and only because they joined MLS did they generate much of that life!

Toronto was a farce in the USL. Absolute farce which should not be forgotten. Detractors said (and there were a ton) the USL team was proof that there was zero interest in soccer in the Toronto and it was folly. Thank goodness for the U20 WC and Canada's promise to build a stadium or that probably might have never happened.

Vancouver and Seattle did not have anywhere close to the interest/following or buzz in the USL. Not even close. MLS brought legitimacy.

Only PDX and Mon-real can boast robust support and anything close to equal footing, in the "breathed life into" statement.

Even then, Mon-real had to be spanked like a lil child before acquiescing and PDX was more than happy to bring the party to MLS when they could.

While there is some truth to your statement, let's not rewrite history either.

Without MLS Vancouver, Seattle and TFC aren't anywhere close to being what they are, and they wouldn't have been in the future either. That attempt was made and at D2 level there wasn't the money, will or interest on a broad enough spectrum. MLS set that interest loose TBH.

Also interesting, having seen these markets to be so fertile, is that D2 couldn't bail itself out.

And here we go. Maybe that's what's new about this incarnation: Instead of washed-up old players wanting to play for them, it's washed-up old players wanting to coach for them.

    Huh what?

Seattle and Toronto have certainly helped MLS, but its not like MLS was hurting in 2006. And Seattle and Toronto weren't exactly D2 hotspots before their MLS announcements.
