I think it would work well if NY2 settles in Queens or Long Island. Geographically i don't think there would be much worry of teams leeching fans off each other and would allow both to grow their respective bases. I'm realitvely new to the whole scene so personally i don't have a opinion one way or the other, but it seems the Cosmos name is a pertty divisive issue that i wouldn't necessarily want around a new club. But the name recognition would help, no matter how genuine or astroturf the idea that a new Cosmos team is claiming legacy on the old team.

I think the RBNY/Metro fanbase has built it self up enough to avoid getting detrimentally hurt by another teams presence. There may be those fans who live near where the Cosmos would play who become torn, but to be honest I don't think the Red Bulls have much to worry about, especially after winning that championship in 2011:cool:. If they win the championship I think theres going to be a plethora of fans who aren't going anywhere. Would you really leave a team after feeling so jubilated after they won it all? I don't think so.

That and all those who were turned off by the name or being in Jersey have probably already jumped ship. Can't lose any fans if they weren't there in the first place.

What's the overall consensus about this in here? Will this hurt or help the Red Bulls?

It solely depends on the Cosmos. If the Cosmos play well, get good players, and get a stadium, I could see it slightly hurting the Red Bulls. If the Cosmos suck a big one, it can't hurt the Red Bulls if they drub their cross city rivals

You mean more surreal. I wouldn't bet the bank on 'em.

There's never been consensus here. But if our dear friends at the RBFO have ever done a SWOT analysis, the marketing of the Cosmos brand should be rated threat #1.

As a massive MetroStars fan who bailed when RB took over, I'm psyched to see some local competition that might inspire me to renew my interest in MLS. I could care less if they are called The Cosmos, FC Queens United Partizan de Scunthorpe, or John Cougar Mellencamp. I just want a local rivalry.

If you don't care about the name/brand, why'd you bail?

Isn't the rivalry with DC enough? Okay, we hate the Revs and Philly, too, but it isn't like we're in need of a rival.

My bailing was more about feeling used as a fan, the terrible stadium experience, a team on the pitch that acted like they could care less, and my own personal lack of time to use and enjoy a ticket plan.

I just didn't have enough steam or incentive to stay a hardcore fan.

And yeah, I've always loved the rivalries between DC & NE (and have bus trip memories to re-live "the good ol' days"), but nothing beats a (pardon the Anglodork speak...) proper derby.

I already hate them and how theyre living in fantasy land. Its amusing if you go on their boards and read them saying how if this and that happens they can start building in only a couple months and have a 40,000 seat sss in queens by 2013. Its comical really. Whatever, Im excited to have the rivalry.

there is a lot of amusing stuff on their board for sure. I think its great for MLS but I'm in the group that a stadium is a massive hurdle and any of the temporary options (Hofstra, Icahn, Meadowlands) will take a lot of steam out of their launch.

But I think the league and RB needs them, DC/NE have little juice...there is some rivalry with Philly but more is needed...

Exactly why Im excited. DC has lost some of the fire and Philly just happens to be obssesed with us while I couldnt really care less about them. I already am starting to grow a hatred for this team and fans especially. An NYC derby will be something MLS has never even come close to seeing before.

Rivalries should develop naturally, why are RB and MLS fans so obsessed with these. Being the closest to a team does not make you a rival.

I have the same feeling with Union fans. They have a weird obsession ex-girlfiend like obsession with Red Bull. Aside from geographic closeness i don't understand what meaningful purpose there is for a rivalry between the clubs. I tend to buy into rivalries that have had meaningful games between clubs. Playoff battles. Races for the top of the standings. Red Bull and Union have none of this between them. I look at what Jets and Patriots have been building over the past couple of years as a proper way to grow a rivalry. For it to work, both teams need to be competitve and there has to be something on the line when they play.

true, but you pretty much cant be a rival without being close....DC and NE could be better rivals but have fallen off.

the obsession revolves around packed stadiums, traveling support, good atmosphere, quality TV matches.

Watch what the 3 pacific northwest clubs do for MLS this year, that's what you want repeated.

They will be rivals in their own city for more than the league, but for media coverage, attention, affection and the like. Cosmos are gonna want to show theyre the best in town while RedBulls are gonna wanna put a spanking on this team for being the new born baby and getting all the attention. It seems pretty natural to me.

Should be epic, and ESPN worthy.

That's not the clubs fault, that's the NJSEA using their muscle against us. You felt used? We all felt used, but never once did any of the real fans bailed. If your a fan of a NYC/NJ team of any sport you never quit on them, great, good, bad or down right disgusting. After everything that has happened and a refreshing change that went from AEG now to Red Bull, this is still Metro.

The same old excuse. It's pathetic. It's like a college student just getting started and their favorite major.Undecided. What's the damn point then? Either stick with your MLS side or just be a Euro Snob. It really sounds like you needed an excuse to jump ship.

I'm sorry, a proper Derby? It's not a proper Derby unless the head of a league is forcing it down your throat. NY Vs DC is a proper Derby since 1996, NY Vs NE/BOS is a proper Derby since Yankees Vs Red Sox, Jets Vs Patriots, Knicks Vs Celtics, Rangers Vs. Bruins & Revs Vs Metro/RBNY.

It just sounds like a bunch of crap when you can just turn the switch on or off on your MLS side but you would never do it to your favorite EPL side or other North American pro sports teams..

Ha, awesome response. Exactly why I haven't posted here in years. Did I say anything about EPL? How the hell am I a Euro-snob? Did I say I felt used *by the club*? Yikes. Some of you are so eager to hate it's ridiculous.

A *real fan*, as you put it, would be psyched that MLS would be regaining another fan who'd taken a break. But like way too many on this board, if someone does not support the team/league/concept/whatever exactly the way you do, they aren't a real fan. That's sad.

There are a lot of assumptions about the Cosmos going on here.

    - That they'll build a stadium in Queens
    - That they'll get the same media coverage as they had back in the 70's
    - That they will actually be any good playing wise
    - That the fans will show up

The Metrostars tried for years to get a stadium built in the NYC area. Even the Jets have failed to build a stadium. What makes people think the Cosmos organization will be able to build a new stadium any time soon especially in this economy?

The media coverage has changed in New York since the 70's. If the US team in the World Cup finals can merit barely a mention in local news, then what hope does any new team have in media coverage after the first few weeks of existance?

Expansion team typically take a few years to get going and become good. Will Cosmos fans have the patience for that?

MLS soccer has existed in the NYC area for 15 years. Are people just going to start attending Cosmos games in MLS after all these NYRB/Metrostars haters' excuses we've heard for years? e.g. standard of play, no stars, too far to travel etc.

    Bob,

Given this, I'm surprised you would consider supporting NYC2. If it is the RB name, that's another issue which I understand, but the issues above seem to have been resolved. Everything I've heard about RBA has been good (sad to say I still haven't been able to get back there) while the players actually do seem to give 100%, unlike at times in the old days (...umm, maybe Guevara just has an injury they haven't disclosed? Yeah, that must be it... :) )

As for burnout, no one who hasn't been around since 96 has a right to comment on this because you don't know how hard it was supporting this team over the years. I used to live a couple of miles from the stadium and by 2002 I found myself fighting to drag myself to games. The utter mediocrity, both on and off the pitch, just wear you out after a while. While I didn't like the rebranding, the fact that we had an owner who actually gave a damn, even if for their own business reasons, actually helped me to get a "second wind" and start supporting the team again. And now with shockingly competent management, money invested in players, and a stream of academy players to root for, I find it pretty easy again.

As for your board comments, that is sadly true, but before you decide to support NYC2, you might want to check out their board here on BS. It makes this one look like the goddamn Algonquin Round Table. :D

Dan! Great to hear from you!

I never said I was planning on supporting The Cosmos Mk II, just that I was psyched to have some local rivalry in my backyard...Which makes the previous attack on my "fandom" so ridic.

I'd love a reason to come back to MLS in earnest. And I'd love to see more games in person. I think I had a streak of about 3 1/2 seasons without missing a home game back in the day. Maybe a fierce super-local rivalry will do it. If so, I'll be the guy in the Metro match jersey Sasa Curcic wore the day he hurt himself and bought himself a ticket to Motherwell. I keep that thing in my bottom clothes drawer, just waiting for a good reason to break it out.
