It’s just that either no one is watching, or no one cares, which is how it should be, and which is why it is no longer that uncommon for European players to crave the anonymity that MLS provides.

It also helps that in MLS, our highest level of professional soccer, a not insignificant percentage of players make less than those who are meant to worship. In 2010, the MLS Rookie of the Year had an annual guaranteed salary of $58,000. One player who started in the MLS Cup final for eventual champions Colorado Rapids made $40,000. These aren’t exactly figures that should significantly skew the behavior of young, impressionable adults.

I've considered doing one (on a smaller scale) for the Rapids, but unlike the Crew colors burgundy and light blue are not primary colors of the LEGO palette so it gets very expensive very quickly. Nice work by whomever did this one!

My god, this guy has steadily and doggedly worked his way from the absolute top of the managerial heap to the absolute bottom. Is there a single thing on his resume besides his name since the retired from playing that would be of any value to any decent club, anywhere? Has any team ever been sad to see him go?

He wasn't even worth making fun of on an internet soccer board.

His face was plastered all over the Netherlands as part of their WC campaign. But not one mention of his stint in LA.

What's even funnier is how people get carried away with the "Chechnya" thing. Well that team in Chechnya turns out to play in the Russian Premier League (Because, after all, Chechnya is part of Russia) which I just have a hunch pays its players and coaches "slightly" better than MLS (Something that I will of course concede if I see proof to the contrary).

And it was all right there in the article. Just saying...

Which doesn't mean he can coach, and if he had done better, or was more respected for any of his other coaching stints he more than likely wouldn't be where he is. Name recognition got him another gig, but it sure as hell isn't top drawer, and it sure as hell doesn't mean he can coach a damn.

I give it under 12 mths. Sounds about right for him.

Pretty weak set up with the straw man argument. No one said a thing about his club career. The poster in question specifically referred to his managerial career. It was all right there in the post :D

    Again, just saying...

Maradona is a total nutcase, a former junkie and a terrible coach. But his name carries so much weight for what he did inside the pitch, that makes you wanna lay off the big old frying pan when you're bashing his coaching career. Sort of the same happens with Gullit.

Re: Respuesta: Re: Tuesday Jan, 18. 2011

Were you really thrown by the typo? It was supposed to read, "since he retired from playing." I guess that wasn't clear enough for you, sorry about that.

And as for your Maradona comparison, when the little coke-head has as many failed managerial jobs as Gullit, it will be apt. Gullit has a definitive body of work as a manager, all of it completely unsuccessful, that makes his playing career wholly irrelevant when judging his ability to lead a club. It's so bad and so complete that it would even call his value as a figurehead/club ambassador into question, and has, if anything, tainted his legacy as a player. That's probably the saddest part of it all, because he was a truly great player.

Didn't Ruud player/coach Chelsea to the FA Cup in 1997, ending 26 years with no hardware ? (also becoming the first non-british manager to win a trophy in England) .... and the next year he was 2nd in the premiership and got to the quarters in both cup competitions ... and he was sacked.

He moved to Newcastle and got them to the FA Cup Final in his first year.

He finished 4th in the Netherlands with Feyenoord (finishing behind the 3 other quality clubs PSV/AZ/Ajax).

    .... I wouldn't say he's done nothing

OK, it's been a steady decline.

Since those promising beginnings he has been on a slow and steady climb down. Finishing 4th with F'nord back then wasn't considered good. He finished 4th out of the only 4 teams who had a shot. F'nord of today is very different then what it was back then.

Even with the Newcastle Cup run there were rumblings about how he managed. Most were not impressed.

He had his flash, just like some players do, but over the long haul the truth comes out...and Ruud isn't impressing most.

Have SKY Sp on while working at home today. Just did a phone interview with Ruud.

They called him 3 days ago, and deal was done over the phone. Didn't even know the club existed, but he RPL is a good league, and the club has great ambition (finished 12th last year) who have promised me the resources I need.

He then went on to say that he has to start somewhere, it's a new beginning and a clean slate. He wants to go back to the EPL and to have a chance he must do this.

Sounds committed. OK, 12 mths was to long. I give it 6 to 9. He sounded almost apologetic and/or embarrassed. Classic stuff.

If he leaves will Putin order him to stay the same way he orders the oil companies to bail out the teams?

The Russian league coaches get cycled at about the same frequency as the Brazilian.

Michael Laudrup and Zico got blown out of the capital pretty fast.

It seems like the owners like to bring in foreign coaches, pick their brains a little and then fire their asses when the local dimwits can't figure out the X's and O's required of them.

Then they take the foreign system, simplify it for the dimwits and try to stick with it until the next foreign coach with a different system is hired.

Then they go through the same cycle again.

This is the MO in the old country. They're always done this like this in every sphere.

Anyone heard the Tu-4 - named by NATO a very apropos "Bull" - story?

It's a blueprint for how things are done in that part of the world.
