What NFLPatriot is saying has nothing to do with established product vs not. I think he's saying 'speak without saying anything' can be a successful PR strategy if it's executed properly, as seen by the Patriots. The Revs are a PR disaster so while Burns may try to do Belichickian PR, he generally fails miserably at it.
Not really. If he said this to the Herald when they talked to him that would be different. He was tight-lipped and monosyllabic with them. No offense intended, but which outlet do you think more people read?
I'd love to land a big fish but I can also talk all day about the big one that gave me a nibble and I almost landed. Can't make up any stories if I never get a bite. the fans just want some news to talk about around the camp fire
Nailed it man. Burnsie is looking for the 'right' fish but doesn't tell us when he gets bites from any fish. "I had this hammerhead shark but...."
Except that in reality, the fish have agents. And the agents can talk. So when Burnsie is talking about the hammerheard shark, the agent will reveal that we never laid out any serious bait.
Right but, playing along, at least the agents will tell us what the bait Fisherman Burnsie laid out was, which allows us to talk about whether it was the appropriate amount, or even if the bait itself is appropriate. If I'm Burnsie, that's ok with me, let the agents talk. It could make the court of public opinion side with the fisherman rather than the fish - silence means we assume the bait was too small for the fish. Maybe the approach itself is wrong. For example, not all fish go for worms, some prefer chum or some combination. If Domi came here more for the culture than the soccer, it tells you he values non-economic lures. Other fish may be attracted to shiny objects, which the SS Gillette can't offer given it's truly in the 'deep sea' away from the bright city lights. Those fish would be better off in NYC or LA so it's best to not even cast a line to them. The hope is we can reel in a big enough fish where Burnsie's reaction is "we're gonna need a bigger boat."
its not like goin' down the pond chasing blue-gills and tommy-cods. This is a fish that can swallow a man whole. A little shakin', a little tenderizing and down ya' go.
Kinda. What that says to me is they actually have a target. We're just looking. And hell, when Burns says the positions we're looking for ... we all knew that those needed to be filled, so it's saying something without saying anything.
Now we're sitting around the hot stove talking about fishing strategies. We really really need the season to start . . . 14 days until training starts . . .
It's more like a campfire and there's a storm brewin...and we're down to our last couple of buckshot. There's holes in the tent and our guide hasn't checked in on us in a while now...He's been off tending to his millionaire's safari. Luckily for us, those guys buried their fully loaded Range Rover in a patch of quick sand. And that can't be rescued until the rainy season is over... So perhaps the guide is gonna come back to us and help us out...All he's got is our deposit and if it doesn't end well, he ain't getting the rest of the trip money!! I knew I should have gone to Club Med..!!
OTOH, since the Revs have reportedly used their discovery claims, they also have specific targets. It's also interesting to note they're still in the market for a center back, despite now having four on the payroll.
“We were certainly looking for a central defender, we’re looking for a central midfielder, and we’re looking for a forward as well,” said Burns. Sounds like past tense on the central defender. As in, they got their central defender in the draft. Looks like Soares vs. Cochrane for the spot next to Barnes. What intrigues me is whether by central midfielder they mean a playmaker or an improvement in the Phelan position.
I am hopeful that with the announcement of Osei being waived, the Revs will announce a signing within a few days. I have to believe that it will be a CB. With Cochrane's history of injuries and Soares being a rookie I can't see them going to camp without another veteran defender.
I'm not so sure it will be a center back, unless it's a major upgrade. More likely, I think, it will be right side defender, mostly to give cover for Alston. Who's also developing an injury history.
I can feel a big announcement coming in the next 24-48 hours. Uguchi would be fantastic, though he just signed on a loan to Twente. How about Cherundolo or Bocanegra ?
This post is exactly what I'm talking about. . . I'm worried that someone is going to get hurt straining to lift all these metaphors.
doesn't make sense to waive a potential starting CB to sign a back up RB...then again this is the revs, so anything goes
With a roster of 30, you have to figure they'll eventually have at least four CBs, so they must be planning either another backup/developmental player (through supplemental draft?), or a signing of a CB. I think it is a reasonable hope that they are in talks with an established CB -- wouldn't think a defense-first coach like Nicol would want his re-tooled team to be anchored in back by Barnes and a journeyman (Cochrane) or a rookie, no matter how promising (Soares). Unless . . . Nicol is planning to go to a 3-5-2, with Domi, Barnes, and Alston, and the back-ups are Cochrane, Soares, Sinovic, a supplmental draftee or two, and Tierney/Phelan if necessary to cover for multiple injuries.
