I read an article from MLS's website claiming that signing John Rooney would bring lots of media attention from England and the press would be "all over the MLS." Thats a HUGE stretch in my opinion, I did a search of the SUN, the premier British tabloid, and he never popped up so I don't think the British press will care much at all. However, i think its still a great story, and I would absolutely love for him to be the CAM we've been looking for the past few years since the great Jorge Rojas left... :)

Slowly were becoming the most marketable soccer team in America(maybe behind the LA Beckhams). With all of our international stars that played many games fro there respective NT's, Henry, Rafa, Richards, Lindpere, Solli and now the little bro of Rooney? Non Americans think of us as the MLS Giants.

There is two ways to look at this news. On the negative side, he ain't no good player and he will leave as soon as he can be picked up by any brit team (whether the premiership or lower, etc.) On the positive, this news will, eventually, be known around the world (based on his brother) and bring attention to the RB. I'm a most stronger supporter of the RB, but let's keep in mind that the current ownership main objective is marketing. You know what I mean.

I've got to imagine he will be a mild curiousity in the foreign press....but if he doesn't get minutes, that will dry up quick.

Well if a team in the Championship shows interest, I'd understand if he chose to leave--after all it's only a step away from the Premiership if his team has a good year. However, if League 1 or League 2 came calling and he left, I would be surprised as I believe the level of play in MLS is above that of League 1 or League 2.

This it is a business like any other one, you will not invert 300Millions for nothing, of course that everything around the RB is marketing and so what, if they at the same time bring a good product, in my opinion I think we never have a core of players equal to the 2011 RBNY and that all is what is important to me, that the team is one of the best five teams on the league....

Based on what I've seen of the young man, it would be cruel indeed to make him the object of a marketing gimmick. If that was the goal of Red Bulls management, this club has made a blunder. Rooney strikes me as someone who wants less attention, not more, for being Wayne's brother. If it so happens that he can find his feet and become a solid pro, it may be he'll accept all the accolades graciously. OTOH, he came off as rather fragile emotionally and sensitive to all the questions. I have my doubts he can distinguish himself, even if there is talent. But, I also think he should be allowed to sink or swim in soccer on his own merits and not get bogged down by comparisons or phony marketing schemes. At this point he's done little to merit much attention. So until he does, IMO it is best just to leave him alone.

New York Red Bulls will not be spending too much of their salary cap on new recruit John Rooney.
Red Bulls general manager Erik Soler suggests the younger brother of Manchester United star Wayne Rooney will be a low-risk, high-reward signing who will be on a very moderate sum for the 2011 season.
“He’s a good midfielder and (we can play him) also behind the strikers. We think we can move him around,” said Soler.
“He’s got good working ability, good feet and it’s a $43,000 risk.”

43,000 dollars is a decent salary for an unproven asset.

Maybe he can be the CAM we need...? For 43K that would be a steal.

Jesus they pay these guys peanuts. I made more as an entry level employee at my first job in the Metro Jersey area. After taxes, that salary is really crappy for the area.

He don't need the money, what he is looking for is TV exposition and he knows that when if he play with NYRB the TVs here will go Ga-Ga and get it, and for ended get noticed that he exist and that he can play to maybe get a contract in some place in Europe...

There's a lot of people in the area that dont make 50,000 let alone 43,000. It's not a sports star's millionaire salary but it isnt garbage either.
Believe me, compared to the 20,000 that some entry level players were making before the new contract with the player's union, Rooney will be living comfortably.

Actually metz he wants the exact opposite. He wants to get out of his brothers shadow and make a name for himself. You are right tho playing in NY with Henry and Marquez will draw a ton of media attention to him. Something that he was trying to escape, but NY chose him, he did not choose NY.
