Just saw this on the SBI draft crawl - If you aren't following SBI on twitter, Ives hearing that the Revolution are in talks with Juan Pablo Angel.

Another old man at forward? Really?

A 35-year-old Red Bulls castoff for our first DP? That's the big news?

    What a joke, if true.

He was "cast off" from New York because they signed Henry and are developing Aguedelo. Los Angeles can't afford him. Half the league wants to sign him, this would be a huge signing.

Regarding turf, half his career has been played on turf, I don't want to hear that bulls**t. If people seriously naysay this move, you're delirious. With Perovic's service and Shalrie's support, Angel will easily score double digits, something we have failed to do since Taylor Twellman's sixteen in the 2007 season, and give much needed experience and composure up top.

Now cost can be of concern, but I don't think Angel is going to get signed anywhere for his current contract, more likely cut in half.

Are you kidding me, JPA is an automatic 15 goals. This would be a huge pick up.

He went into a tailspin the second half of the season last year.

I think he made, what, $1.9M last year?

So even cut in half that would be $1M.

For $1M, we could find a 25-year-old who could get us 10-12 goals a season and actually play 30+ games.

You can't gamble on a 35-year-old's health over 34 games (20 on turf) and make that the "go to" guy and pay him DP money to boot.

When have we ever been able to get anybody with that kind of talent other then Perovic. I'm glad you have that much faith in the FO.

He made $1,620,000 base salary, $1,918,000 guaranteed.

I think he knows he's not making over $800k, I'd take him for a second-tier DP salary (Boskovic money).

You also act like we'd actually go out and find a 25 year old striker who can get into double digits.

Given we don't have to worry about Superliga, I think fixture congestion isn't going to be as large of a concern. Unlikely we'll get any Gold Cup callups unless Shalrie or Alston are selected. Sign Angel, pick a striker in the third round, and I think the forward position is set for this season.

This would be huge for the Revs, Angel is worth double digit goals.

So Montero and Saborio are just impossible dreams, beyond the reach of MLS?

Beyond the reach of MLS? No. Beyond the reach of the Revs? Yes. How long have you supported us to know that, outside Perovic, we've not really made a big non-draft, non-trade signing under the Nicol era? I'm not saying it's impossible, merely that we won't do it.

Who says everything has to be "big" news? Why can't it just be one part of the puzzle?

And, you don't even know the cost and you've already decided he's too expensive?

The guy knows how to score, he played in 30 games last season and scored 1/3 of his team's total goals. Doesn't sound so old to me.

Angel played the majority of his time in MLS on the worst playing surface in the league, so I dont think our turf is a concern with him.

I would be very, very, very happy to see JPA in a Rev uniform. The man has shown he knows how to score at the highest levels. He may be getting towards the end of his playing days but he could just be the clinical finisher this team needs to regain the momentum they lost when Twellman went down. Color me excited at this potential signing.

My take on JPA is that his best fit is with a team with multiple other attackers, which would afford him the chance to slip through cracks in the defense and be lethal. However, a team like that might not offer him the pay day he wants (e.g. LAG). I get a little more nervous about him if a team wants to put all of its eggs in his basket. I don't think he's that guy anymore.

He's kind of like Shaq in that respect.

Barros-Schelotto was 34/35 when the Revs passed on him. He worked out fine for the Crew....granted he didn't play many games on Turf.

I think JPA has a good year or 2 left. I would definitely be happy if this happened. WE CURRENTLY HAVE NOTHING AT FORWARD, can you see any forward on our current roster scoring 10 goals.

If this is "the DP" they promised, I'm mad.

If this a piece of the puzzle, I'm fine with it.

But in order to be a piece of the puzzle, it would mean we're signing two DPs.

Otherwise, we're setting ourselves up for the following late season announcement:

Obviously we could never have foreseen Juan Pablo's injury situation after investing designated player money in an exciting attacker

I hear this said all the time. Did we pass on him? I know he didn't sign with the Revs but I'm not sure I've ever heard an "official" reason (ie--other than speculation) why.

FWIW, teams make judgements all the time that the retrospectascope show to have been shortsighted. Imagine how Dallas feels for passing on Twellman in the draft to pick up a player with a blown out knee with their #1pick? :D

It's amusing to me that people that used to always point at RBNY when they only had JPA as their DP and laugh and say how "Look it doesn't make a difference." Now those same people want him. Love hypocrisy.

Anyway, I think if the Revs can make this happen, I'd like it a lot, but I do worry about him on our turf. I do agree with AutoGolazo though, I don't want this to be their only offensive move (outside the draft).

I would love to have JPA on this team. Right now the Revs need someone who can put the ball in the net and this guy can do it. Do I want him as the main DP, no I don't but he would be a big boost. This guy is a pure goal scorer which this team lacks. If the Revs bring in JPA and can add another player of impact then the club will be heading in the right direction.

After reading your comments, I have tempered down a bit. My initial reaction was no way JPA should play for the Revs. Part of it is that JPA is Mr. Metrostars/ Redbulls. The question is why did New York let him go. Perhaps it is due to foreign player slots. But whenever a team lets a player go, and when another team can;t agree terms, it is for a reason. They may see things in his game that we don't see as fans of another team. He may be a head case now, or he may not get the ball on the frame.

I know the guy is in top physical shape, but they better do a thorough job of due diligence before we sign up sonmeone else's former problem.

I know JPA wants to be close to his family in New York which may make him willing to play ball on salary...hmmmmm.

As a non-DP, would work for a year or two.

I should say not our main DP.
