At the risk of repeating myself, he is still only 23 and yes, I'll say it, the best player I have seen SINCE Maradona.

Those classic era football player (30-60) are overated actually. The defenders played like clown, its funny to see Pele got stealed and the defender looking left and right until Pele steal the ball back.

I've always regarded Pele as being overrated, but that is an argument for another time and forum. No doubt that the likes of Di Stefano and Cruyff were all time greats, and for me Maradona was the greatest of them all. Messi is the best I have seen since Maradona, obviously he needs to add a world cup winners medal to be ranked alongside the all time greats, but he is heading in the right direction.

To say he is overhyped is ridicelous, you only have to live in England and see any English player have two decent games to understand what being overhyped means. Messi is the real deal.

Oddly enough, you mentioned two players that has no world cup thropy. One lost in the final, the other one didnt even make it with Spain.

Di Stefano I believe could have played in one world cup if Argentina had not pulled out of it! Cruyff had the elegance of a ballet dancer, a splendid footballer.

When Diego was at his peak the Ballon d'Or was only given to European players playing in European clubs.

Seems Napoli is interested in getting Gaby Milito on loan till the end of the season. I think it would be a good move for him.

I was thinking exactly the same when people brings in Sneijder for the award, his first half of the year was amazing, but the second half he went nearly anonymously, while Messi and Xavi has been more consistent.

Yes, and remember Xavi and Iniesta won the world cup, Sneijder was beaten finalist. So Messi individual achievement (top score in both CL & La liga) plus Xavi, Iniesta winning the world cup, that means they deserve to be in the top 3.

Guardiola has rushed to the defence of the Argentinean star, saying that Messi adds to the Spanish Liga, and does not detract from it. Speaking ahead of the King’s Cup game against Betis, Guardiola said that
‘Everything is Messi’s merit, from all his work and all his talent. We are here to lend him a hand, so that he can express all his talent and so that these people can vote at the end of the year’.

Pep continued, ‘What has Messi robbed? He gives to us. To all of us who are sat here every weekend and who have such a great time watching him, in the same way as Xavi, Iniesta, Cristiano....many more’.

How anyone could have given Iniesta a go at this prize is beyond me. He only played for 6 months.

Either way, this shows the typical bullshit of the Spanish. Always with their discriminatory ways. It's sickening.

Watch, this is something that's going to linger in Messi's mind. If he feels betrayed by all this, he might end up leaving Barca.

PS. Did you see how Iniesta was looking at Messi while he was toasting on the plane? It was straight up jealously!!!!

been outta town for a bit... back to the forum. congrats to messi i'm so glad he won it and not the fraud xavi. i made a comment about xavi being overrated in the FIFA forum and people let me have it, but we saw just how inconsequential he is in barca's last match. Masche recovered more balls than anyone and completed more passes, but there was no world wide media lovefeast proclaiming Masche the greatest midfielder in history (as some dilusional people claim about Xavi) Masch is a great passer, and he fights and recover so many balls. he created the first and fourth goals in that match.

To me, Messi was the rightful winner. Iniesta deserved a shout because he did score the winning goal, and he had a great world cup. he was very inventive. forlan should have been 2nd or 3rd. i wouldn't have had xavi in my top 20 probably. if spain had a real "10" like messi, forlan, or riquelme they would have won the world cup scoring 15-20 goals, as it was they are the worst world cup winner in history with 8 goals.
I do hope Messi leaves Barcelona soon. I'd love to see him at Inter, Juve, or Madrid. Sooner or later he also needs to return to argentina and play

You seriously want to see Messi and CRonaldo in the same team? That's a disaster waiting to happen. Did you see Ronaldo's face when Messi won?

    Juve can't afford him.

    Hands down!

Iniesta played 6 months out of the year. His only accomplishment was the goal scored for the World Cup. EPIC FAIL.

Based on? His world cup appearance? Isn't this a prize with regards to regular season performance? The World Cup has it's own prizes, he won that and has done nothing since.

Atrocious is more like it. I stopped watching futbol because of Spain winning the World Cup. It's even worse than ANTI FUTBOL.

I've been saying for a while now that Messi will end up leaving Barca on bad terms. This Balon D'Or is probably that turning point for the rupture in the relationship. If you look at the video, when they are on the plane, returning from the awards ceremony you can see the envy in Iniesta's face as Messi toast him and Xavi.

Another curious thing. Why was Messi wearing a tux? Did he know that he was going to win it? I don't remember if Andres or Xavi were also wearing tux's .

Yeah that shit was special! I can't believe that he would even make a face. This guy just cant hold it in. He just doesn't like Messi at all.

I can't wait for Messi to leave Barca! I really want to see him repeat his success somewhere else!

I'm surprised you guys think he might leave. Get ready to wait for twelve years. Let him repeat his success for Argentina, that's enough. At club level it's just a matter of how many awards and trophies can he pile up at Barca.

I am getting a little tired of reading articles when people say Iniesta or Xavi deserved it. For what? This is the award for the best player in 2010, and Messi by a mile was the best. Xavi nor Iniesta did not have a World Cup to remember, okay Iniesta scored the GW in the final, but does that mean he is the best in the world?

As for Messi leaving Barca, I think the fans might burn down Camp Nou before they let him go on bad terms. Iniesta is not Catalan, Xavi is getting up there in age and well, Messi is more important to that team than anybody else. Messi going to Real Madrid? lol... I do not think Messi is somebody like Figo, and he has a bit more respect for himself and the club to make that jump. He might be the greatest Barcelona player ever, and he is only 23. By the time he leaves, I do not think there will be any doubt.

Messi aint leaving Barca, Messi follow his parent all the time and his parent is 100% decicated to Barca... so forget about Messi's leaving Camp Nou

Messi already won WYC and olympic and helped Argentina to reached copa 2007 final (became best young player), anyone who think he cant succeed outside Barca is total fool.

also, forget about the critics, its funny because there were so many critics 4 years ago when Cannavaro was voted as WPOTY because the media blame FIFA who based the vote heavily on world cup alone.

The total number of goals & assist that Xavi & Iniesta made at world cup is 2 goals and 2 assist. That's only as good as Ortega stats in 98.

Sorry, but I think you speculated too much there.... Messi feels betrayed? its Spanish media that went for the critics not Barca...I disagree that Iniesta being jealous on Messi... there's no jealousy there... journalisim will always be journalism, they will always do that not only to Messi. So many of them hates C Ronaldo too.

Did you hear what Cassilas said yesterday? he said Messi is no doubt the best player in the world, but he would give the award to Iniesta or Xavi because they helped Spain to win the world cup.... makes you wonder if he actually know the difference between player and a team:rolleyes:

Former Barcelona and Real Madrid winger Luis Figo insists that awarding Lionel Messi the 2010 FIFA Ballon d’Or was the correct decision.

The legendary former Portuguese international offered his opinion on the Argentine, who collected the title for the second year in succession, finishing ahead of World Cup winners Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

Figo, who himself won the title in 2000, said of the ceremony: “This is an individual trophy and Messi is the best. He won despite the fact that both Xavi and Iniesta had done very well this year.
