Re: Paul Mariner - New Head Coach??

Having read the translation (although my wife is of Dutch extraction, she doesn't speak the language),and trying to superimpose what I know of Dutch soccer, I'm getting the feeling that Winter will take Mo's spot, Marriner will replace Dasovic (if Marriner is destined to come to TFC rather than some other destination in MLS - like Chivas, maybe), while Bob De Klerk have some role to be played which I can't figure out just yet.

Lots of Dutch sources - they're going crazy over there.

    http://www.telegraaf.nl/telesport/voetbal/8634577/__Winter_TD_bij_FC_Toronto__.html?sn=voetbal

Winter was a fantastic midfielder for the Dutch in the 1980s/1990s and has strong roots with Ajax. This really could result in massive changes for TFC - the strengths and weaknesses of Ajax's system are very well documented - and it'll shut up all those "Oh, jeez, another British guy...." critics.

Yea, they seem to be saying this. Not much experience at the Technical level it would seem but perhaps the sources I looked at were incomplete. Seems to have a strong work ethic and certainly has the pedigree so could be a most interesting choice.

Let's hpe Mariner doesn't bring Carver back with him. Carver lasted three games at Sheffield United and they are now one place out of relegation.

I seriously doubt that Carver would come back even if he was asked (which he won't be).

A lot of buzz going on, hopefully the club will make an official announcement soon.

According to Wikipedia, yeah, Winter signs a 3-years deal as a head coach with TFC.

Another one from Netherlands' "Three Musketeers" Generation trying his hand on head coaching. If it is true, I hope he won't fail like Gullit with Galaxy. With MLS veteran Mariner backing him up might be a good fail proof.

Some people might laugh at the Wiki reference, but I will say that when a Wiki article is changed ahead of an official announcement it is very frequently correct, at least from my own experience.

I like that he's being made a manager and not a general manager. That's the right way to run a soccer club.

Toronto might also sign Bas Ent and Evan Schwarz from the Dayton Dutch Lions.

Re: Aron Winter named TFC Manager and TD, Paul Mariner as Asst. Manager?

    Few comments...

To the extent this is about "Ajax" specifically, it sounds more like a long-term project because Ajax's system has traditionally been youth-development oriented. Churn out quality players from an Academy, sell them off, replace them with the next line. For a while it kept them more competitive than the Eredivisie might suggest. Quite sensible approach, and sounds like what Klinsmann might suggest, but it would take years to work.

Let's say he's just generally pushing Dutch voetbal, eg, Clockwork Orange of the 70s, that's a project, too....even if we're trying for a modest facsimile. You'd have to rework the roster free of Chad Barrett-types to get the technicality to pull it off. You can come over wanting to play Gullit-style continental ball all you want, but then you have to implement it with a bunch of hustling, physical US college grads. People act like MLS just suddenly turns into a physical league from nothing, but I see it as a product of the team and defensive sensibilities of the USA youth system. Grow up playing defensive and grinding 352 or 442 and it's not surprising that's what MLS generally does. Not unlike the Ajax Academy stuff I just pointed out, you'd have to go back to square 1 and develop the players to play the system.

Mariner would be a useful guide to MLS and American soccer, and has played the role before at length, but wouldn't it be something of a comedown to go from Revs assistant graduating to Championship head coach back down to TFC coach? No offense to TFC but if I were him I'd be chasing Winter's job or some other head MLS position. It doesn't make a ton of sense as a career move.

    From USA today

Report: Aron Winter to become Toronto FC's technical director

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Former Netherlands national team midfielder Aron Winter says he has agreed to become technical director and head coach of FC Toronto.
Winter, a former player with Ajax and Inter Milan, says in an interview with Dutch daily De Telegraaf that he planned to fly to Canada on Monday to sign with the Major League Soccer club.

He told the newspaper that he "had a good feeling" after visiting the club last week.

It had appeared Paul Mariner, the former Plymouth Argyle manager, would become Toronto's coach

    Sounds great!

All except for the fact that now one of MLS' two Canadian teams is going to be sporting a banner that reads "IN WINTER WE TRUST". :D You just can't make these things up.

Awesome I'll take this orange kool-aid! It actually looks promising to me. Winter/Mariner in charge and a ton of mlse money to salvage this mess and save Anselmi's job! Hope springs eternal! Free agent signings galore ! Dero who?

Ya but be fair. He was interim. He couldn't change the roster. He didn't have command. He was filling a space until they hired the new guy.

.... and why even speculate about JC coming back here? That would never happen.

TFC is entering a new era. Aaron Winter is they key man. Mariner will have a big role too but the team is now Aaron Winter's.

I'm really interested in seeing how this management team builds up the roster, particularly with new internationals to replace the lot that got the boot in the fall.

I'm looking forward to what they'll add in the short term, but especially how they'll manage the academy for the long term.

    Here's a little fresh perspective:

    http://orangelegion1.blogspot.com/2011/01/132011-toronto-fc-is-going-dutch-ajax.html

Would not be surprised if Sonny Silooy now joins the coaching staff in some capacity with Aron Winter. The two are best buds from winning everything at Ajax and I have heard from someone that talks to Silooy all the time that there's a good possibility.

MLS-Rumors said today Ent and Schwartz will sign with TFC Jan. 17. Don't know about all of that but I can confirm I heard that Ent and Schwartz will be headed to TFC from Jan. 17 to the 22nd, heard Schwartz was also headed to train with the Rapids after that so that conflicts that their signing them as soon as they arrive.

Which makes sense, better to take another look, especially if you guys are not looking for another Colin Samuel after the holidays.

And at the beginning of this story, I probably gave the Dayton Dutch Lions a little too much credit for your Dutch wave these past few months that culminated into Aron Winter. It's called blowing some smoke, but think your club may have a slight Dutch hard-on, had to begin somehow.

Winter being TD and coach is a bit concerning since Mo tried that and failed but im pretty sure Winter is much more capable than Mo ever was
