I wouldn't miss Mississippi. I'll throw in Favre if FIFA agrees to ban John Harkes.

53 goals and 13 assists in 56 matches in Madrid.

I'd take Ronaldo over Messi any day of the week.

    Top analysis.

To which you can add a clean brand environment, which Nike and co will love.

Nevermind the fact that in this global environment, who can rule out a "Halliburton-esque" amount of infrastructure and stadium building and security details that will have to be acquired. None of that is coming out of FIFA or the EXCO's pockets. The snake is eating it's tail.

Messi's numbers are just as good.

Though, I do think Ronaldo and Messi are a lot closer than most people seen to think.

Ronaldo is dominant in the air, one of the fastest players in the world, while being big and strong, and skilled in basically every way. In terms of improvement from what he was at the start of his senior career, he has refined and perfected virtually every aspect of his game.

Messi is incredibly lucky to play with Xavi. Messi without Xavi for Argentina often looks like a much less dominant player.

Something has ALWAYS bugged me about Messi, as I'm sure you've seen me spout off about. He's class for sure, but if you're going to criticize Ronaldo for his theatrics you have to hang Messi for them.

When Ronaldo found directness, sometime around October of 2006, he became unplayable. Their styles are completely different, but I think in mentality you can compare him to Drogba. If they're up for it you can't stop them, but they're both prone to completely losing the plot mentally.

Also, don't forget Ronaldo's set piece prowess. It's pretty incredible that he was able to just kinda "develop" that.

Because of his overall personality, he doesn't really get any credit for what must have been really hard work to improve so much of his game. I don't really feel sympathy for him, though. He 1) is highly compensated for his hard work, and 2) constantly gives you new reasons to dislike him.

And yes, Messi is also a diver, but he is more tolerable to me because he doesn't seem like an absolute jerk 100% of the time. Most of the time, he just goes about his game in a pretty subdued way. He dives when he gets the chance and will try to get someone sent off too, but honestly, that is a pretty common thing among South American players. I am not from there, obviously, but it seems that they don't really consider it a moral wrong so much as clever gamesmanship.

Messi because he is the best player in the world

remember last year when Arshavin was failing at CF, Messi is now Barca's CF and is amazing... we have the passers and creators, so he can just go in and finish or play that final ball

that was the point of my post. he said that Messi wouldn't be as good without Xavi and then mentioned his Argentina form.

Ronaldo falls into the same category.

That works a little bit better in Russia than it does in Qatar - al-Jazeera's based there, and most of the governments in the government hate al-Jazeera for a reason. That said, given that FIFA just gave the World Cup to an Arab country, I think al-Jazeera keeps the gloves on.

Tough one. Fake Ronaldo (because he isn't Brazilian) irks me, but maybe that is because it is because of seeing him play in the Prem so much.

Messi irks me, but given that he plays for Barca, that is a reason enough.

I would give the nod to Messi based on what I observed in the 2008 Champions League final. It seemed like Messi was a better team player where Christino seemed like he was trying to win it all on his own. Several times he would have team mates open who had a better chance than him, but yet he kept the ball and wasted chances. Could just be how fluid Barca was, but that is why Messi gets the nod.

As for comparing them on national team level, it could be that egos aren't put to the side. I would dare to say that is why England doesn't do so well in tournaments.

ronaldo is more suitable for the premiership

messi is more injury prone and not as strong

i have no doubt he would do well but ronaldo would be a better prem player

i rate messi slightly higher overall, but both are incredible

It is a bit different, because when Ronaldo plays with Portugal, he has much less talent around him. As well, Ronaldo's national team slump coincided with a period where Portugal became very defensive and essentially left him alone to attack.

Messi, by comparison, plays alongside a bunch of other top quality players for Argentina in an expansive, attacking style, yet he doesn't look himself.
