I think anyone who cares about the game gets nervous before a match. I play in competitive recreational leagues and I still get nervous after playing for 25 years, even if the game means nothing. If you're still nervous DURING the game, maybe there's nothing you can mentally do about it...

I know it sounds drastic, but maybe you have an anxiety disorder? If you're really worried about it you might see a doctor and/or psychiatrist and see if you have a diagnosably anxiety problem, which can be medically treated.

IMO i believe being nervous before a game is natural and shows that you care about the result and the outcome and that you wanna make sure your on top of your game!!!

I know what your talking about man.
This year I started playing competitive and I was so nervous before the games, But now i'm getting over it. I'm still alittle nervous before the games couse I want to play at my best.

What usually helps is before a game just think about going out there, and having some fun.

I totally know what you all are talkin about. I'm a keeper for my team, and am nervous through the entire match, that if I give up a goal it will cost my side the match. It is something that I have never been able to get through, obviously goals will be scored, but I still cant get past the fact that I am letting my team down, and because of that I am always neverous before and during a match.

man, based on my own experiences, being nervous or rather being too "heady" out there on the pitch can cost you dearly. I've had to learn the hard way, how to turn that nervousness into explosiveness and just let your footballing instincts take over.

I've made some crucial mistakes due to being nervous. I once handled an incoming cross for a penalty during a high school league match. After that (which costed my team the match) I just learned that it wasn't the end of the world and played extremely well for the rest of the season at left-back.( even though I'm naturally a forward)

BTW, if that doesn't make you feel better, a terrible mistake like that, I don't know what will! LOL

I'm surprised that so many people are nervous before every game.

For some reason I'm never really that nervous. I'm always excited but I wouldn't say nervous. If it's a big game than maybe there's a little nerves but generally I'm OK. And I don't think you can say that makes me any less up for or interested in the game.

My advice would be not to think about being nervous and not to worry too much about mistakes. You need to be on your toes but too much worrying will not help.

I ALWAYS get nervous before a big match, but not until we have the team talk just before the game. All through warm up I will feel so good my touches will be right on then right before I will get all nervous and it screws me up completely. The nerves go away 10 to 15 mins in though or when i get my first big tackle or whatever but it is still so annoying.

I know what exactly to do. I had this same problem. When i was 15, my coach would constantly repeat to me dont give away the ball and that is all i thought of and guess what i did, i gave away the ball. Now at U18 i finally found the trick to performing your best at game time. Even though my coach crictizes me for listening to music before game time, its the only way i can perform good.

A couple things that you could try.

Be confident when you play, confidence is really the key. Something to help your confidence is praticing and know that you have the utilites to play.

Listen to walkman, some music, when you warm up, up until kick off, that really helps you get in a good state of mind, and not to over think about the match.

Play simple at first, try to get the ball as much as possible and build your confidence during the match. i find i got into each game with zero level of confidence, and as soon as i do things good consectivley that is when i find i play my best.

Just have fun, dont take things so seriously. If soccer isnt fun then you shouldnt be playing.

And when you play, constantly repeat in your head, what am i going to do before i get the ball. If you do that then you wont give it away. This is the best thing. something that if you get at higher levels you have to do, because your time with the ball is limited.

Be comfortable, relax. dont panic. maybe even touch your pee pee before the game or something.

''I usually don't have sex. Not on the same day. I say no thanks. I guess that, mentally, I want to keep the feeling in my feet and that's why. I think the feeling sort of disappears out of your feet if you have sex before. I have tried before and my feet felt like concrete when you are supposed to kick the ball." Freddie Ljungberg

but thats Ljungberg, it may work for you, who knows. haha

Those things should work. Tell me how things go. I hope it was some help with you.

I just recently came over here to germany, and found myself being nervous and not playing to my level, and i went back to those things and it helped me alot.
