No wonder Qatar got the world cup, if Exco members couldn't be bothered to read the technical reports.
This was a complete F'ing farce. The only hope is that it was so unbelievably stupid that it will be the end of FIFA, though I doubt that.
Re: Three things everyone needs to understand about FIFA http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/federation/bodies/exco.html Why are some members actually given their positions? Tahiti? Guatemala? Cyprus? Thailand? Where are the countries which actually have a vested interest in world football? Uruguay, Greece, Mexico, Italy, Australia etc.
The biggest problem I can't get past is: where are all the visitors going to stay? Qatar has like 10,000 hotel rooms, which is less than what we have here in the DC area. You're not going to get international hotel companies to spend multi-millions to add enought rooms for a one-month event, since they'll likely sit empty after the WC ends. Which means a lot of the visitors would have to stay in neighboring countries, which means another layer of visa problems, security concerns, tranportation issues etc. And I'm really skeptical that people from Europe, the Americas or even most of Asia have any real interest in dropping $5-10 thousand on a "vacation" to a place like Qatar. Spending a couple of weeks or a month in the US or Australia is something tourists can easily do, as there is a lot to spend your time and money on when you're not at a WC game. But Qatar? What is there to do there, really?
The argument is that it's not just about technical reports. And it's a fair argument:- the fact that the US would host again after 28 years should have counted against it, for example. But, those reports should carry some weight, but it's clear from the voting that they carried zero. Actually, worse than that, there was actually a negative correlation between strength of technical report and first round votes. So what's the point? The three bids with the strongest technical reports - England, USA and Australia garnered a grand total of six votes between them on the first round of voting.
Re: Three things everyone needs to understand about FIFA The voting pattern makes no sense.... http://voices.washingtonpost.com/box-seats/2010/12/world_cup_bid_voting_patterns.html
I don't know why people are waisting any energy on this. It's clearly black and white. There is no grey. England and Australia had the best two bids. If not them, then Spain and USA. Russia and Qatar were the worst and they got picked. FIFA is corrupt. It's not enough that 22 of their officials get wined and dined and treated like kings every two years. And that's that.
They wanted pliant governments that would help line FIFA's pockets. So they chose two countries where the media, politicians and electorate don't ask difficult questions.
Re: Three things everyone needs to understand about FIFA politics, politics, and politics oh and money to. Let's not forget the money. Thanks for telling everyone what they already learned when FIFA made their decision. That doesn't make their decision right. So I don't really get your point. FIFA always say that it is a football decision. That's the difference. Not political, and not about revenue. All about the football. People aren't stupid, they know what goes on. But when they are so blatant about it. That's another matter. But in my opinion FIFA have shot themselves in the foot. The word of the British and American news media goes around the world. And already the corruption stories are coming in. This is not good. I think the only ones naive here are FIFA themselves.

This is a dual edged problem though. If a country has to essentially white wash fundamental parts of its "culture" and "values" to even be tolerated as a host let alone embraced, isn't their a problem? I'm sure things will run smoothly, but in the end, this isn't, soley, what its about. Are their values compatible with the program fifa wishes to push? Fifa's programs to fight racism, to fight homophobia, and yes to fight sexism are fundamentally at loggerheads with the values of certain cultures, and to the extent that there is a culture in Qatar, it is, essentially, at loggerheads with these european ideas. This isn't even taking into account the heat, the single airport, the impossibility of really providing totally reliable security, transport and housing issues. To address these concerns (to the extent that they can) essentially they will have to invent cities out of thin air, not simply share their culture with the world, to actually functionally host this thing. There are so many angles at which this is a joke that don't even take into account the likely corruption involved that got this done (check out Wahl's latest article for the outright lying going on, let alone kickbacks or vote trading, the presidency switch etc), that it simply astounds one to see that Fifa had the chutzpa to actually go through with this farce.
I cannot believe I hadn't previously included these wonderful attractions on my Bucket List. But I simply don't know if it's possible to see all of them in 4 short weeks!
Geezzz, boy you guys are lucky, back here with luck we get only 2 weeks for vacations, with great possibilities to be called by our bosses in the middle of them, to get back to work, or else lose jobs. I envy your luck.
Re: Three things everyone needs to understand about FIFA Well then if the media get serious about this then it would be good for Football, go wikileaks, go after FIFA. BTW the American media, really? like any of them care about soccer, please tell me, what was the biggest story in the American sports media yesteday? WC host selections or Lebran James going back to Cleveland? The American Media will not care about this the day after tomorrow. It is not like this is the Olympics.
Re: Three things everyone needs to understand about FIFA Ok. If the American media aren't upto kicking up a fuss. Then let's just rely on the British media. Here's a good one. Daily Mail: England must quit FIFA! World Cup 2018 bid farce proves Europe's big guns must go it alone, blasts Ken Bates Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-big-guns-blasts-Ken-Bates.html#ixzz174Sk1NRi
Rickdog, please, all I'm saying is if it takes an extra couple of weeks, even unpaid leave, to see things like the Al Shaqab Stud Farm, there's simply no choice. I'm sure you'd agree.
my post was serious, although off-topic, my friend We don`t get very long vacations and least, permissions, back here. Maybe for this issue to being taken care of back in my country, we need FIFA`s concern or a WC host, to mend this unfair work issue, that afflicts us
Quote: "There are no openly gay players in Germany's Bundesliga, reflecting the situation across the football world, although it is estimated that about 10% of players are gay." I like the way mainstream journalists pull things out of their ass and come up with complete bullshi1t articles. Yeah.......there are no openly gay plays reflecting the situation across the entire football world... But hey.... I bet 1 in 10 really are!
