At least he moves up a division, I think-- and he might have a chance to play more regularly than he did for Huddersfield Town. I think the article also said that he might even get a chance to prove himself this weekend.
It appears from the article that Thorrington is no longer with Huddersfield at all. Or did I just read the article wrong? I am all for his move, lets hope he can show what so many of us want to believe that he can.
He's left HT. http://www.htafc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10312~499109,00.html?ptvParm= Current Huddersfield manager says he did it in order to give JT a chance at another club, change of tactics hurt his chances, etc.
The deal is only two-months. Hopefully Thorrington will do well enough to give himself some good options at season's end. If Grimsby stay up and he helps the cause, you'd expect they'd like to try to keep him. Or maybe he does enough to interest other clubs. I suspect he'd stay in England or Europe if the chance presents itself, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out that MLS makes some kind of offer, too.
Of this is good news.....of course, he should come back to MLS afterwards and re-establish himself... Elton John had a song called Grimsby...
Quote from Huddersfield's site: "I called John into the office earlier this month and explained to him that his first team chances were limited. I explained to him that I would not be offering him a contract at the end of the season" Looks like John had no choice but to move.
JT was possibly their best player when they were in D2, and now in D3 he's not in their chances. It doesn't compute. Is the coach saying he can't adapt to their system? Geez, I think this is about wages, not the player.
It must be the coach not the player, otherwise Grimsby wouldn't want him, as they need help to avoid relegation. The Grimsby coach must think well of John and that is a good sign, lets hope he can show well and establish himself.
Grimsby just has a quick blurb about the signing, nothing from the manager. The fans seem cautious from their board. Most have said that he is fast (we knew that) but are a little nervous about the lack of match play he has had over the last few years. That said, each of them in their predictions for the starting line-up for the week put him in it.
On the positive side, he is rested. Good for JT, hope he can get some minutes and get his career back on track.
This is definitely an interesting. I watched him play for HTFC during the 01/02 season when they were figthing for a playoff spot and their opponent, Brentford, was in the running for straight promotion. Thorrington was easily among the most skilled and fastest players on the field and a key part of the club's offense. I have little reason to believe that he went from a player good enough to battle for a spot in D1 to a player who can't get action in D3 in a couple of years unless there's some other issue or issues at play here. The wage issue has been discussed here at length. He has also been injured, and it's possible he's lost a step and/or been demoralized as a result. No doubt the rather surprising turn his career has taken -- Man U and Leverkusen, and now this? -- has impacted his outlook somewhat. His U.S. chances have obviously taken a big knock. Let's hope he makes the most of this opportunity -- and that Grimsby stays in D2.
I'm not sure that we will EVER know the reasons behind HT's handling of Thorrington. Lots of guesses, theories and fairy tales..... One thing I haven't heard mention was JT's role as "player rep". Do you remember when he and his teammates were not getting paid? Perhaps he was critical of management and they resented him ever since. I find it odd that a team that is UP a division and desperate would seek out the services of a guy who is not getting ANY chances for HT. It's either stupidity on Grimsby's part, or HT truly hates JT....
Glad to see JT exit Hudderfield. I was beginning to think that the Kirovski syndrome was setting in. Two months is not long to impress however, I think a change will do both sides some good. Two things crossed my mind-----wasn't JT hurt recently? Maybe Huddersfield just said that as a way to justify not playing him. Also, wasn't there another Yank that impressed at Grimsby and might be there next season?
a speed demon with skill down the right wing, that's what he used to be. defenders were so scared of him they resorted to fouling him often. sounds like something the usmnt needs as a bookend for dmb. GO JT!!!!!!!
oh my god!!!! get a new song dude besides, how could he come 'back'? was he ever in MLS? i dont know why i have to repeat this everytime JT comes up, but his lack of PT at hudtown had ZERO to do with his performances
Well, Grimsby aren't the most fasionable of teams nor one with a lot of money to spend. So that COULD be a factor, too. I don't think it is in this case. On another note, Nicky Law signed Warhurt from Bolton recently.
JT started for Grimsby and was one of the most dangerous players. Looks like he's back in form already?
The link is for the match report for JT's first match. Sounds like he was pretty active on the wing. http://www.grimsby-townfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0,,10417,00.html
