Im surprised no one has brought this up. Alex Nimo just sent a pretty harsh message to RSL and just made it pretty hard for him to play for anywhere else in the league. He just put up his dukes when there wasn't even a fight. As far as RSL goes, surely, that ship has sailed. Article
maybe this is a bit harsh, but the kid cant cut it with RSL. He has been on the roster for what, 2 or 3 years now, and has little to no time with the first team in anything meaningful. So, in short, who the hell is Alex Nimo? - in all honesty, nobody outside soccer nerds on this board know who that kid is and that his contract is with RSL. Hopefully these feelings of "I have to play for Portland" are shared with the Timbers in that they "have to have Nimo". We could really use it to our advantage.
Simon Borg brought up this whole situation on Extra Time Radio. He basically lambasted Nimo for his stupidity and sense of entitlement. Let's hope RSL can get something (money, draft pick, anything...) out of this.
Wow... that's the kind of thing a kid who's not seen enough of the world says. Won't he be surprised if/when those words come back to haunt him.
Cool I highly doubt that played a factor in his decision making process. He is a whole lot closer to the big leagues. I'm sure that makes up for the 6K he is missing there
Why not agree to give Nimo to Portland if they agree to not pick from our unprotected? Perhaps not such a great deal for the Timbers.
Exactly Though I wouldnt be surprised to see RSL hold onto Nimo until the season started just to see what they could get out of Portland. Maybe we can package him with some $ (if we have any) to get either a player the picked from us in the expansion draft, or someone that we want that they picked from another team in the expansion draft
Sounds like Ian Joy didn't get picked up by Portland for next year. That is too bad. I really like Ian. I wouldn't mind him coming back here to shore up our outside backs. http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_...al-timbers-let-eight-players-go-and-more.html
I'd take him back. The guy knows our system and fits the mentality of this squad very well. Hopefully RSL is trying to work something with him, potentially.
That is so bogus. How can the Timbers not pick their Captain (Who has mroe than enough MLS experience)??? I feel for IJ. He's in Europe right now with his family, maybe he will be looking for another club...
I'd love to have Joy in the back again. I think more than anything RSL let him go because of his injury woes (not that you can really blame them, he spent most of his time with the team hurt). If Joy is healthy, he's a great player at least equal to Wingert and Russel and probably a touch better than Beltran.
Yeah, not sure how you dont keep the guy who was your captain, has played in Europe, is a US citizen, and has MLS experience... makes you wonder if Joy asked to leave like he did here. If so, it makes sense. If not, wtf was Portland thinking?
This is IJ's twitter, Sad day. Leaving Portland and Cole behind for Scotland today. Lots to do before I leave though... Speculation in P-Land that he was offered a contract but he was not happy with it. It's just speculation though.
Why would you rely on a guy like Ian Joy? Fantastic person, sure, and a decent player, but he has issues that would make me cautious about envisioning him as more than a one year player. He asked out from the club once before, apparently didn't like what Portland had to offer salary wise, and doesn't yet have a settled family situation - he could head back to Europe again. I'd say that ship has sailed, and that there are better players besides (including the trio currently manning our flanks). Also, that European playing experience so often cited is a canard - a year of semi-pro ball in Scotland, a season each of D3 and D4 ball in England, and five seasons of D3 ball in Germany along with the past season in D2 USA. He has 20 D1 appearances in his club history, all with RSL.
I'm more than a little stunned that they didn't keep Joy. He was captain and played nearly every minute for them. Are they a bunch of Bozos running that franchise?
Nolly and the WhiteCaps Maybe Jay can track down DJ and convince him to play back up for him http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Nolly+plays+keeps+with+Whitecaps/3768568/story.html
Ian Joy writes a letter to the Portland Timber fans: I remember when he wrote a letter to the RSL fans. Class act and I respect that. The big question is this: Is he going to be in the MLS or staying in the second division? What MLS teams would offer Ian Joy a contract?
Ian Joy posted on Facebook - "Talks fell through with Portland due to them offering a shitty contract and not willing to up the offer. It might be my last 4 years so don't want to play for free anymore. I'm back in Scotland with Madison so living the daddy dream right now!!! Want to stay in the states but will look at all options. "
